1 Jacó chamou seus filhos e lhes disse: "Reuni-vos, porque eu quero anunciar-vos o que vos há de acontecer nos dias vindouros:2 Ajuntai-vos e ouvi, filhos de Jacó. Escutai Israel, vosso pai.3 Rubem, tu és o meu primogênito, minha força, primícias do meu vigor. Notável em dignidade e notável em poder.4 Transbordante como a água, não terás o primeiro lugar, porque subiste ao leito de teu pai, e desse modo maculaste o meu leito.5 Simeão e Levi são irmãos; suas espadas são instrumentos de violência.6 Minha alma não participe de suas maquinações, meu coração jamais se associe às suas reuniões! Porque em sua cólera mataram homens e em seu furor enervaram touros.7 Maldita cólera que os levou à violência, maldito furor que os induziu à crueldade! Hei de dispersá-los em Jacó, hei de espalhá-los em Israel.8 Judá, teus irmãos te louvarão. Pegarás pela nuca os inimigos; os filhos de teu pai se prostrarão em tua presença.9 Filhote de leão, Judá: voltas trazendo a caça, meu filho. Dobra-se, deita-se como um leão; como uma leoa: quem o despertará?10 Não se apartará o cetro de Judá, nem o bastão de comando dentre seus pés, até que venha aquele a quem pertence por direito, e a quem devem obediência os povos.11 Amarra à videira o jumentinho, à cepa o filho da jumenta. Lava com o vinho suas vestes, com o sangue das uvas o seu manto.12 O vinho aumenta o brilho de seus olhos, seus dentes são brancos como o leite.13 Zabulon habita à beira do mar, no litoral, onde aportam os navios, e seu flanco se estende por Sidon.14 Issacar é um jumento forte, deitado nos currais.15 Vê que é bom o descanso e a terra agradável: curva os ombros sob a carga, sujeita-se ao tributo.16 Dã julgará seu povo, como uma das tribos de Israel.17 Dã será uma serpente no caminho, uma cobra na estrada, que morde a pata do cavalo e derruba o cavaleiro.18 Espero em vosso socorro, Senhor!19 Gad será saqueado por quadrilhas de assaltantes, mas também os assaltará e perseguirá.20 Aser tem um pão saboroso, que constitui as delícias dos reis.21 Neftali é uma gazela solta, que tem lindos filhotes.22 José é broto de uma árvore fértil, broto de uma árvore fértil junto à nascente: seus ramos crescem acima do muro.23 Provocam-no, atiram contra ele, atacam-no os flecheiros,24 mas, seu arco permanece firme, seus braços e mãos desembaraçados pelas mãos do Poderoso de Jacó, pelo nome do Pastor, que é a pedra de Israel,25 graças ao Deus de teu pai, que te ajuda, graças ao todo-poderoso, que te abençoa com as bênçãos do céu altíssimo, com as bênçãos do profundo abismo, com as bênçãos dos peitos e do seio.26 As bênçãos de teu pai sobrepujam as bênçãos das antigas montanhas, as aspirações das colinas eternas. Que elas desçam sobre a cabeça de José, sobre a fronte do príncipe de seus irmãos!27 Benjamim, lobo voraz, de manhã devora a presa e à tarde reparte o despojo."28 São estes todos que formam as doze tribos de Israel. Foi isso que lhes disse seu pai ao abençoá-los. A cada um deu uma bênção particular.29 Em seguida, fez-lhes esta recomendação: "Eis que vou ser reunido aos meus. Enterrai-me junto de meus pais na caverna da terra de Efrom, o hiteu,30 na caverna da terra de Macpela, defronte de Mambré, na terra de Canaã, essa caverna que Abraão havia comprado a Efrom, o hiteu, ao mesmo tempo que a terra, para ter a propriedade de uma sepultura.31 Foi aí que enterraram Abraão e Sara, sua mulher; foi aí que enterraram Isaac e Rebeca, sua mulher; e foi aí que enterrei Lia".32 {Essa propriedade, bem como a caverna que nela se encontra, foram compradas aos filhos de Het.}33 E, tendo Jacó dado aos seus filhos esta última recomendação, recolheu os pés em sua cama, e expirou. E foi reunido aos seus.

1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.3 Reuben, thou art my first–born, my might, and the beginning of my strength; the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power should be thine.4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not have the excellence; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou the one who ascended my couch.5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; weapons of violence are their swords.6 Into their secret shall my soul not come; unto their assembly my spirit shall not be united; for in their anger they slew the man, and in their self–will they lamed the ox.7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.8 Judah, thou art the one thy brothers shall praise, thy hand shall be on the neck of thy enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down unto thee.9 Like a lion’s whelp, O Judah, from the prey, my son, thou risest: he stoopeth down, he croucheth as a lion, and as a lioness, who shall rouse him up?10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet; until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.11 He bindeth unto the vine his foal, and to the vine–branch his ass’s colt; he washeth his garments in wine, and in the blood of grapes his clothes;12 His eyes shall be red from wine, and his teeth white from milk.13 Zebulun shall dwell at the margin of the seas; and he shall be at the haven of ships; and his border shall be near to Zidon.14 Issachar is a strong–boned ass, couching down between the stables.15 And when he saw the resting–place that it was good, and the land that it was pleasant, he bent his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder on the path, that biteth the horse in the heels, so that his rider falleth backward.18 For thy salvation, I hope, O Lord.19 Gad, troops will band against him; but he shall wound their heel.20 Out of Asher cometh fat bread, and he shall yield royal dainties.21 Naphtali is like a fleet hind; he bringeth pleasant words.22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring; the branches of which run over the wall.23 And they embittered his life, and they shot at him, and they hated him, the men of the arrows.24 But his bow abode in strength, and his arm and his hands remained firm; from the hands of the mighty God of Jacob, from there thou becamest the shepherd, the stone of Israel.25 From the God of thy father, who will help thee; and from the Almighty, who will bless thee, with blessings of heaven above, with blessings of the deep that coucheth beneath, with blessings of the breasts, and of the womb;26 With the blessings of thy father that have excelled the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: these shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separated from his brothers.27 Benjamin shall be as a wolf that rendeth: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at evening he shall divide the spoil.28 All these are the tribes of Israel, twelve in number; and this is what their father spoke unto them, and wherewith he blessed them; every one according to his proper blessing blessed he them.29 And he charged them and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people; bury me near my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which field Abraham bought of Ephron the Hittite, for a possession as a burying–place,31 (There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah,)32 Purchasing the field and the cave that is therein from the children of Heth.33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed; and he departed this life, and was gathered unto his people.
