1 Eis as partes que os filhos de Israel receberam em herança na terra de Canaã, que lhes deram o sacerdote Eleazar, Josué, filho de Nun, e os chefes de família das tribos de Israel.2 A repartição fez-se por sorte pelas nove tribos e meia, como o Senhor havia prescrito, por meio de Moisés;3 porque às outras duas tribos e meia, Moisés tinha dado sua parte além do Jordão; mas não deu parte alguma aos levitas.4 Os filhos de José formavam, com efeito, duas tribos: Manassés e Efraim. Aos levitas não deram herança na terra, mas apenas cidades para habitarem e os arredores dessas cidades para os seus rebanhos e os seus bens.5 Como o Senhor tinha ordenado a Moisés, assim fizeram os israelitas, e dividiram a terra.6 Os filhos de Judá vieram ter com Josué, em Gálgala; e Caleb, filho de Jefoné, o cenezeu, disse-lhe: Sabes o que o Senhor disse de mim e de ti a Moisés, homem de Deus, em Cades-Barne.7 Eu tinha quarenta anos quando Moisés, servo do Senhor, me enviou de Cades-Barne a explorar a terra, e eu lhe fiz um relatório perfeitamente sincero.8 Meus irmãos que tinham ido comigo desanimaram o povo, mas eu segui fielmente o Senhor, meu Deus.9 Naquele dia, Moisés fez este juramento: a terra que pisaste será a tua parte e a de teus filhos para sempre, porque seguiste fielmente o Senhor, meu Deus.10 Pois bem: eis que o Senhor conservou-me a vida, como prometeu. Quarenta e cinco anos são passados desde que o Senhor assim falou a Moisés, durante a marcha de Israel pelo deserto; tenho hoje oitenta e cinco anos,11 e acho-me ainda robusto como no dia em que Moisés me enviou, e sinto-me tão forte como naquele tempo, tanto para a guerra como para qualquer outra missão.12 Dá-me, pois, este monte que o Senhor me prometeu naquele tempo; porque naquele dia ouviste que se encontram enacim neste lugar, e também grandes fortalezas. Se o Senhor estiver comigo, conseguirei despojá-los, como ele disse.13 Josué abençoou Caleb, filho de Jefoné, e deu-lhe Hebron como herança.14 Eis por que Hebron pertence até o dia de hoje a Caleb, filho de Jefoné, o cenezeu, porque ele seguiu fielmente o Senhor, Deus de Israel.15 {Hebron chamava-se outrora Cariat-Arbé; Arbé foi o maior homem entre os enacim.} E a terra ficou, a partir de então, tranqüila e sem guerra.
1 And these are the countries which the children of Israel obtained as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Elazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the divisions of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for an inheritance unto them,2 By the lot as their inheritance: as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and the half tribe.3 For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half tribe on the other side of the Jordan; but unto the Levites he had given no inheritance among them.4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Menasseh and Ephraim; therefore they gave no portion unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their open spaces for their cattle and for their substance.5 As the Lord had commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel, and so divided they the land.6 And the children of Judah came near unto Joshua in Gilgal; and Caleb the son of Yephunneh the Kenizzite said unto him, Thou well knowest the word which the Lord spoke unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thyself in Kadeshbarnea.7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadeshbarnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.8 But my brethren who had gone up with me caused the heart of the people to be faint; but I wholly followed the Lord my God.9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy foot hath trodden shall belong to thee for an inheritance, and to thy children for ever; because thou hast wholly followed the Lord my God.10 And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he hath spoken: it is now forty and five years since the Lord spoke this word unto Moses, while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, behold, I am this day eighty and five years old.11 I am yet this day as strong as I was on the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, and to go out, and to come in.12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the Lord spoke on that day; for thou didst hear on that day that the Anakim were there, and great fortified cities: perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as the Lord hath spoken.13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron unto Caleb the son of Yephunneh for an inheritance.14 Therefore did Hebron become the inheritance of Caleb the son of Yephunneh the Kenizzite unto this day; for the cause that he had wholly followed the Lord the God of Israel.15 And the name of Hebron was aforetimes Kiryatharba, who was the greatest man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.
