1 The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 2 "Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear my words."

3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was making something on the wheels. 4 When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 6 "House of Israel, can’t I do with you as this potter?" says Yahweh. "Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, house of Israel. 7 At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it, 8 if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them. 9 At the instant I speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, 10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good with which I said I would benefit them.

11 "Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Yahweh says: "Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a plan against you. Everyone return from his evil way now, and amend your ways and your doings."’ 12 But they say, ‘It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’"

13 Therefore Yahweh says:

"Ask now among the nations,

‘Who has heard such things?’

The virgin of Israel has done a very horrible thing.

14 Will the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field?

Will the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?

15 For my people have forgotten me.

They have burned incense to false gods.

They have been made to stumble in their ways

in the ancient paths,

to walk in byways, in a way not built up,

16 to make their land an astonishment,

and a perpetual hissing.

Everyone who passes by it will be astonished,

and shake his head.

17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy.

I will show them the back, and not the face,

in the day of their calamity.

18 Then they said, "Come! Let’s devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won’t perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let’s strike him with the tongue, and let’s not give heed to any of his words."

19 Give heed to me, Yahweh,

and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.

20 Should evil be recompensed for good?

For they have dug a pit for my soul.

Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them,

to turn away your wrath from them.

21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine,

and give them over to the power of the sword.

Let their wives become childless and widows.

Let their men be killed

and their young men struck by the sword in battle.

22 Let a cry be heard from their houses

when you bring a troop suddenly on them;

for they have dug a pit to take me

and hidden snares for my feet.

23 Yet, Yahweh, you know all their counsel against me to kill me.

Don’t forgive their iniquity.

Don’t blot out their sin from your sight,

Let them be overthrown before you.

Deal with them in the time of your anger.

1 Cette parole fut [adressée] de par l'Eternel à Jérémie, disant :

2 Lève-toi, et descends dans la maison d'un potier, et là je te ferai entendre mes paroles.

3 Je descendis donc dans la maison d'un potier, et voici, il faisait son ouvrage, assis sur sa selle.

4 Et le vase qu'il faisait de l'argile qui [était] en sa main, fut gâté, et il en fit encore un autre vase, comme il lui sembla bon de [le] faire.

5 Alors la parole de l'Eternel me fut [adressée], en disant :

6 Maison d'Israël, ne vous pourrai-je pas faire comme a fait ce potier; dit l'Eternel? voici, comme l'argile est dans la main d'un potier, ainsi êtes-vous dans ma main, maison d'Israël.

7 En un instant je parlerai contre une nation, et contre un Royaume, pour arracher, pour démolir, et pour détruire;

8 Mais si cette nation contre laquelle j'aurai parlé se détourne du mal qu'elle aura fait, je me repentirai aussi du mal que j'avais pensé de lui faire.

9 Et si en un instant je parle d'une nation et d'un Royaume, pour l'édifier et pour le planter;

10 Et que cette nation fasse ce qui me déplaît, en sorte qu'elle n'écoute point ma voix, je me repentirai aussi du bien que j'avais dit que je lui ferais.

11 Or donc parle maintenant aux hommes de Juda, et aux habitants de Jérusalem, en disant : ainsi a dit l'Eternel : voici, je projette du mal contre vous, et je forme un dessein contre vous; abandonnez donc maintenant chacun sa mauvaise voie, et changez votre voie, et vos actions.

12 Et ils répondirent : il n'y a plus d'espérance; c'est pourquoi nous suivrons nos pensées, et chacun de nous fera selon la dureté de son cœur mauvais.

13 C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit l'Eternel : Demandez maintenant aux nations qui a entendu de telles choses? la vierge d'Israël a fait une chose très-énorme.

14 N'abandonnera-t-on pas la neige du Liban pour la roche du champ? et ne laissera-t-on pas les eaux qui ne sont point naturelles, et qui sont froides, [encore] qu'elles coulent?

15 Mais mon peuple m'a oublié, et il a fait des parfums à ce qui n'est que vanité, et qui les a fait broncher dans leurs voies, pour [les faire retirer] des sentiers anciens, afin de marcher dans les sentiers d'un chemin qui n'est point battu;

16 Pour faire venir sur leur pays une désolation et un opprobre perpétuel; [tellement que] quiconque passera par là en sera étonné, et branlera la tête.

17 Je les disperserai devant l'ennemi, comme par le vent d'Orient; je leur tournerai le dos, au jour de leur calamité.

18 Et ils ont dit : venez, et faisons quelques machinations contre Jérémie; car la Loi ne se perdra pas chez le Sacrificateur, ni le conseil chez le Sage, ni la parole chez le Prophète; venez, et frappons-le de la langue, et ne soyons point attentifs à aucun de ses discours.

19 Eternel, entends-moi, et écoute la voix de ceux qui plaident contre moi.

20 Le mal sera-t-il rendu pour le bien? car ils ont creusé une fosse pour mon âme. Souviens-toi que je me suis présenté devant toi afin de parler pour leur bien, [et] afin de détourner d'eux ta grande colère.

21 C'est pourquoi livre leurs enfants à la famine, et fais couler leur sang à coups d'épée; que leurs femmes soient privées d'enfants, et veuves, et que leurs maris soient mis à mort; et leurs jeunes gens tués avec l'épée dans la bataille.

22 Que le cri soit ouï de leurs maisons, quand tu auras fait venir subitement des troupes contre eux; parce qu'ils ont creusé une fosse pour me prendre, et qu'ils ont tendu des filets à mes pieds.

23 Or tu sais, ô Eternel! que tout leur conseil est contre moi pour me mettre à mort; ne sois point apaisé à l'égard de leur iniquité, et n'efface point leur péché de devant ta face, mais qu'on les fasse tomber en ta présence; agis contre eux au temps de ta colère.
