1 This is Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

2 "Judah mourns,

and its gates languish.

They sit in black on the ground.

The cry of Jerusalem goes up.

3 Their nobles send their little ones to the waters.

They come to the cisterns,

and find no water.

They return with their vessels empty.

They are disappointed and confounded,

and cover their heads.

4 Because of the ground which is cracked,

because no rain has been in the land,

the plowmen are disappointed.

They cover their heads.

5 Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young,

because there is no grass.

6 The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights.

They pant for air like jackals.

Their eyes fail,

because there is no vegetation.

7 Though our iniquities testify against us,

work for your name’s sake, Yahweh;

for our rebellions are many.

We have sinned against you.

8 You hope of Israel,

its Savior in the time of trouble,

why should you be as a foreigner in the land,

and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?

9 Why should you be like a scared man,

as a mighty man who can’t save?

Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us,

and we are called by your name.

Don’t leave us.

10 Yahweh says to this people:

"Even so they have loved to wander.

They have not restrained their feet.

Therefore Yahweh does not accept them.

Now he will remember their iniquity,

and punish them for their sins."

11 Yahweh said to me, "Don’t pray for this people for their good. 12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence."

13 Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’"

14 Then Yahweh said to me, "The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart. 15 Therefore Yahweh says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine. 16 The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them.

17 "You shall say this word to them:

"‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,

and let them not cease;

for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach,

with a very grievous wound.

18 If I go out into the field,

then behold, the slain with the sword!

If I enter into the city,

then behold, those who are sick with famine!

For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land,

and have no knowledge.’"

19 Have you utterly rejected Judah?

Has your soul loathed Zion?

Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us?

We looked for peace, but no good came;

and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

20 We acknowledge, Yahweh, our wickedness,

and the iniquity of our fathers;

for we have sinned against you.

21 Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake.

Do not disgrace the throne of your glory.

Remember, and don’t break your covenant with us.

22 Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain?

Or can the sky give showers?

Aren’t you he, Yahweh our God?

Therefore we will wait for you;

for you have made all these things.

1 Cuvântul Domnului spus lui Ieremia cu prilejul secetei: 2 „Iuda jelește, cetățile*Is. 3:26. lui sunt pustiite, triste, posomorâte*Cap. 8:21. și strigătele Ierusalimului se*1 Sam. 5:12. înalță. 3 Cei mari trimit pe cei mici să aducă apă, dar cei mici, când se duc la fântâni, nu găsesc apă și se întorc cu vasele goale: rușinați*Ps. 40:14. și roșiți, își*2 Sam. 15:30. acoperă capul. 4 Pământul crapă, pentru că nu cade ploaie în țară, și plugarii, înșelați în nădejdea lor, își acoperă capul. 5 Chiar și cerboaica de pe câmp naște și își părăsește puii, pentru că nu găsește verdeață. 6 Măgarii sălbatici*Cap. 2:24. stau pe locuri înalte și pleșuve, trăgând aer ca niște șerpi; li se topesc ochii, pentru că nu este iarbă." 7 Dacă nelegiuirile noastre mărturisesc împotriva noastră, lucrează pentru*Ps. 25:11. Numele Tău, Doamne! Căci abaterile noastre sunt multe, am păcătuit împotriva Ta. 8 Tu, care ești nădejdea*Cap. 17:13. lui Israel, Mântuitorul lui la vreme de nevoie, pentru ce să fii ca un străin în țară, ca un călător care intră doar să petreacă noaptea în ea? 9 De ce să fii ca un om încremenit, ca un viteaz care*Is. 59:1. nu ne poate ajuta? Și totuși Tu ești în mijlocul*Exod 29:45,46.Lev. 26:11,12. nostru, Doamne, și Numele Tău este chemat peste noi. De aceea nu ne părăsi! 10 Iată ce spune Domnul despre poporul acesta: „Le place*Cap. 2:23-25. să alerge încoace și încolo. Nu-și cruță picioarele, de aceea Domnul n-are plăcere de ei; acum Își aduce*Osea 8:13;9:9. aminte de nelegiuirile lor și le pedepsește păcatele!" 11 Și Domnul mi-a zis: „Nu mijloci*Exod 32:10. Cap. 7:16; 11:14. pentru poporul acesta! 12 Căci, chiar dacă vor*Prov. 1:28.Is. 1:15;58:3. Cap. 11:11.Ezec. 8:18.Mica 3:4.Zah. 7:13. posti, tot nu le voi asculta rugăciunile și chiar dacă vor aduce*Cap. 6:20;7:21,22. arderi-de-tot și jertfe de mâncare, nu le voi primi, ci vreau să-i nimicesc*Cap. 9:16. cu sabia, cu foametea și cu ciuma." 13 Eu am*Cap. 4:10. răspuns: „Ah, Doamne Dumnezeule! Iată că prorocii lor le zic: ‘Nu veți vedea sabie și nu veți avea foamete, ci Domnul vă va da în locul acesta o pace trainică.’" 14 Dar Domnul mi-a răspuns: „Prorocii lor prorocesc*Cap. 27:10. minciuni în Numele Meu; Eu nu i-am*Cap. 23:21;27:15;29:8,9. trimis, nu le-am dat poruncă și nu le-am vorbit, ci ei vă prorocesc niște vedenii mincinoase, prorociri deșarte, înșelătorii și închipuiri scoase din inima lor. 15 De aceea așa vorbește Domnul despre prorocii care, măcar că nu i-am trimis Eu, prorocesc totuși în Numele Meu și*Cap. 5:12,13. zic: ‘Nu va fi nici sabie, nici foamete în țara aceasta’: ‘Prorocii aceștia vor pieri uciși de sabie și de foamete! 16 Iar aceia cărora le prorocesc ei vor fi întinși pe ulițele Ierusalimului de foamete și sabie; nu va avea cine să-i îngroape*Ps. 79:3., nici pe ei, nici pe nevestele lor, nici pe fiii lor, nici pe fiicele lor; voi turna astfel răutatea lor asupra lor.’ 17 Spune-le lucrul acesta: ‘Îmi varsă lacrimi*Cap. 9:1;13:17.Plâng. 1:16;2:18. ochii zi și noapte și nu se opresc. Căci fecioara*Cap. 8:21., fiica poporului meu, este greu lovită cu o rană foarte usturătoare. 18 Dacă ies la câmp*Ezec. 7:15., dau peste oameni străpunși de sabie. Dacă intru în cetate, dau peste niște ființe sleite de foamete; chiar și prorocul și preotul cutreieră țara, fără să știe unde merg.’" 19 Ai lepădat*Plâng. 5:22. Tu de tot pe Iuda și a urât sufletul Tău atât de mult Sionul? Pentru ce ne lovești așa, că*Cap. 15:18. nu mai este nicio vindecare pentru noi? Trăgeam*Cap. 8:15. nădejde de pace, și nu vine nimic bun; așteptam o vreme de vindecare, și nu-i decât groază! 20 Doamne, ne recunoaștem răutatea noastră și nelegiuirea părinților noștri, căci am păcătuit*Ps. 106:6.Dan. 9:8. împotriva Ta. 21 Pentru Numele Tău, nu nesocoti, nu necinsti scaunul de domnie al slavei Tale! Nu uita*Ps. 74:2,20;106:45., nu rupe legământul Tău cu noi! 22 Este*Zah. 10:1,2. oare printre idolii*Deut. 32:21. neamurilor vreunul care să aducă ploaie? Sau poate cerul să dea ploaie? Nu dai*Ps. 135:7;147:8.Is. 30:23. Cap. 5:24;10:13. Tu ploaie, Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru? Noi nădăjduim în Tine, căci Tu ai făcut toate aceste lucruri!
