Mark 7:9-13

VDC
WEB World English Bible (American Edition)

9 He said to them, "Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother;’7:10 Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16 and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’7:10 Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban,"’"7:11 Corban is a Hebrew word for an offering devoted to God. that is to say, given to God, 12 "then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making void the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down. You do many things like this."

  2. KJV King James Version

9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

  3. NIV New International Version

9 And he continued, "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe7:9 Some manuscripts set upyour own traditions!10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’7:10 Exodus 20:12; Deut. 5:16and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’7:10 Exodus 21:17; Lev. 20:911 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)—12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother.13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

  4. ESV English Standard Version

9 And he said to them, "You have a fine way of Luke 7:30;Gal. 2:21(Gk.);Heb. 10:28(Gk.)rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!10 For Moses said, Cited from Ex. 20:12‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, Cited from Ex. 21:17‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban"’ (that is, given to God)7:11 Or an offering—12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,13 thus Gal. 3:17(Gk.);[Rom. 2:23]making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do."

  5. NLT New Living Translation

9 Then he said, "You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’7:10a Exod 20:12; Deut 5:16.and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’7:10b Exod 21:17 (Greek version); Lev 20:9 (Greek version).11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’7:11 Greek ‘What I would have given to you is Corban’ (that is, a gift).12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents.13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others."

  6. NKJV Nova Versão King James

9 He said to them, "All too well Prov. 1:25; Is. 24:5; Jer. 7:23, 24you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.10 For Moses said, Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16; Matt. 15:4‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9; Prov. 20:20‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’11 But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, Matt. 15:5; 23:18"Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban"—’ (that is, a gift to God),12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother,13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do."

  7. NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘The one who speaks evil of father or mother, is7:10 Lit to die with deathcertainly to be put to death’;11 but you say, ‘If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is, 7:11 Lit a gift; i.e., an offeringgiven to God),’ 12 you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;13 thereby invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."

  8. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

9 And he said to them: Well do you make void the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said: Honour thy father and thy mother; and He that shall curse father or mother, dying let him die. 11 But you say: If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban, (which is a gift,) whatsoever is from me, shall profit thee. 12 And further you suffer him not to do any thing for his father or mother, 13 Making void the word of God by your own tradition, which you have given forth. And many other such like things you do.
