1 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, house of Israel! 2 The LORD says,

"Don’t learn the way of the nations,

and don’t be dismayed at the signs of the sky;

for the nations are dismayed at them.

3 For the customs of the peoples are vanity;

for one cuts a tree out of the forest,

the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.

4 They deck it with silver and with gold.

They fasten it with nails and with hammers,

so that it can’t move.

5 They are like a palm tree, of turned work,

and don’t speak.

They must be carried,

because they can’t move.

Don’t be afraid of them;

for they can’t do evil,

neither is it in them to do good."

6 There is no one like you, LORD.

You are great,

and your name is great in might.

7 Who shouldn’t fear you,

King of the nations?

For it belongs to you.

Because among all the wise men of the nations,

and in all their royal estate,

there is no one like you.

8 But they are together brutish and foolish,

instructed by idols!

It is just wood.

9 There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish,

and gold from Uphaz,

the work of the engraver and of the hands of the goldsmith.

Their clothing is blue and purple.

They are all the work of skillful men.

10 But the LORD is the true God.

He is the living God,

and an everlasting King.

At his wrath, the earth trembles.

The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation.

11 "You shall say this to them: ‘The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.’"

12 God has made the earth by his power.

He has established the world by his wisdom,

and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens.

13 When he utters his voice,

the waters in the heavens roar,

and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth.

He makes lightnings for the rain,

and brings the wind out of his treasuries.

14 Every man has become brutish and without knowledge.

Every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image;

for his molten image is falsehood,

and there is no breath in them.

15 They are vanity, a work of delusion.

In the time of their visitation they will perish.

16 The portion of Jacob is not like these;

for he is the maker of all things;

and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance:

the LORD of Hosts is his name.

17 Gather up your wares out of the land,

you who live under siege.

18 For the LORD says,

"Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time,

and will distress them, that they may feel it."

19 Woe is me because of my injury!

My wound is serious;

but I said,

"Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it."

20 My tent has been destroyed,

and all my cords are broken.

My children have gone away from me, and they are no more.

There is no one to spread my tent any more,

to set up my curtains.

21 For the shepherds have become brutish,

and have not inquired of the LORD.

Therefore they have not prospered,

and all their flocks have scattered.

22 The voice of news, behold, it comes,

and a great commotion out of the north country,

to make the cities of Judah a desolation,

a dwelling place of jackals.

23 LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself.

It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

24 LORD, correct me, but gently;

not in your anger,

lest you reduce me to nothing.

25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you,

and on the families that don’t call on your name;

for they have devoured Jacob.

Yes, they have devoured him, consumed him,

and have laid waste his habitation.

1 Ouve a palavra do Senhor, ó Israel:2 Não façam o mesmo que os outros povos que elaboram horoscópios, e tentam ler o seu destino e o seu futuro através dos astros! Não fiquem atemorizados com as suas predições, porque tudo isso é só um monte de mentiras. São processos estúpidos e sem sentido. Cortam uma árvore, e talham nessa madeira um ídolo, revestem-no de ouro e de prata; depois seguram-no bem num determinado lugar, por meio de pregos e dum martelo; isto para que não caia, e ali fica o seu deus, como um espantalho mudo num campo cultivado! Não pode falar, e tem de ser transportado, porque não se desloca por si próprio. Não tenham medo dum deus assim porque é uma coisa que não pode fazer mal nem tão pouco ajudar; não vos serve para coisa nenhuma.6 Ó Senhor, não há outro deus além de ti. Porque tu és grande e o teu nome é cheio de poder. Como é possível que haja quem não te tema, ó rei das nações? (E este é um título que só a ti pertence!) Entre todos os sábios da Terra, em todos os países do mundo, não há ninguém que se assemelhe sequer a ti.8 Os mais inteligentes dos homens que adoram ídolos acabam por se revelar, por isso mesmo, como estúpidos e loucos. Trazem folhas de prata batida de Tarsis, e ouro de Ufaz; entregam isso a habilidosos ourives que lhes fazem os seus ídolos; depois vestem esses deuses com fatos reais, feitos de púrpura, que alfaiates de categoria fizeram.10 Mas o Senhor permanece o único verdadeiro Deus, o Deus vivo, o rei eterno. Toda a Terra tremerá sob a sua ira; o mundo inteiro se esconderá da sua indignação.11 Diz isto a esses que adoram outros deuses: Essas coisas a que vocês chamam os vossos deuses, que não fizeram nem os céus nem o mundo, serão banidos da Terra.12 O nosso Deus sim, que foi ele quem fez a Terra pelo seu poder e sabedoria; foi com a sua inteligência que formou o universo.13 É a sua voz que ecoa no meio do trovão, por entre as nuvens duma tempestade. Faz o vapor de água erguer-se sobre a terra; manda os relâmpagos e traz a chuva; faz soprar o vento dos seus recantos.14 Mas homens embrutecidos, sem conhecimento de Deus, inclinam-se perante os seus ídolos. É uma coisa vergonhosa, esta em que essa gente caiu; porque tudo aquilo não passa duma enorme fraude; são deuses nos quais não há uma mínima centelha de vida, que não têm o mais pequeno poder neles.15 São todos coisas sem valor algum, inutilidades; serão desfeitos, quando os seus fabricantes perecerem.16 Mas o Deus de Jacob não é como estes ídolos de doidos. Ele é o Criador de todas as coisas, e Israel, a sua nação escolhida. O Deus das legiões é o seu nome.17 Faz as tuas malas - diz o Senhor. Apronta-te a partir; o cerco em breve vai começar. Porque dum momento para o outro, lançar-te-ei desta terra e lançarei grandes provações sobre ela; sentirás enfim a minha ira.19 A minha chaga é desesperante. A minha tristeza é enorme. A minha doença, incurável; mas terei de tudo suportar.'20 A minha tenda está destruída e todas as cordas se desprenderam. Os meus filhos foram-se embora uns, desapareceram outros. Não me ficou ninguém para tornar a montar-me a tenda e me estender os panos.21 Os pastores do meu povo perderam o entendimento; já não seguem mais Deus nem procuram a sua vontade. Por isso as suas ovelhas morrem ou são dispersas. Ouçam bem! Escutem o terrível barulho de grandes exércitos aproximando-se do norte. As cidades de Judá hão-de tornar-se covis de chacais.23 Ó Senhor, eu sei bem que não compete ao homem dispor da sua vida, traçar os seus caminhos - por isso me corriges, Senhor. Mas peço-te que o faças com medida. Não o faças com fúria, porque eu não resistiria. Derrama a tua ira sobre os povos que não obedecem ao Senhor, porque eles destruíram Israel, e fizeram de toda a sua terra um enorme deserto.
