1 "The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron,

and with the point of a diamond.

It is engraved on the tablet of their heart,

and on the horns of your altars.

2 Even their children remember their altars

and their Asherah poles by the green trees on the high hills.

3 My mountain in the field,

I will give your substance and all your treasures for a plunder,

and your high places, because of sin, throughout all your borders.

4 You, even of yourself, will discontinue from your heritage that I gave you.

I will cause you to serve your enemies in the land which you don’t know,

for you have kindled a fire in my anger which will burn forever."

5 The LORD says:

"Cursed is the man who trusts in man,

relies on strength of flesh,

and whose heart departs from the LORD.

6 For he will be like a bush in the desert,

and will not see when good comes,

but will inhabit the parched places in the wilderness,

an uninhabited salt land.

7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,

and whose confidence is in the LORD.

8 For he will be as a tree planted by the waters,

who spreads out its roots by the river,

and will not fear when heat comes,

but its leaf will be green,

and will not be concerned in the year of drought.

It won’t cease from yielding fruit.

9 The heart is deceitful above all things

and it is exceedingly corrupt.

Who can know it?

10 "I, the LORD, search the mind.

I try the heart,

even to give every man according to his ways,

according to the fruit of his doings."

11 As the partridge that sits on eggs which she has not laid,

so is he who gets riches, and not by right.

In the middle of his days, they will leave him.

At his end, he will be a fool.

12 A glorious throne, set on high from the beginning,

is the place of our sanctuary.

13 LORD, the hope of Israel,

all who forsake you will be disappointed.

Those who depart from me will be written in the earth,

because they have forsaken the LORD,

the spring of living waters.

14 Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed.

Save me, and I will be saved;

for you are my praise.

15 Behold, they ask me,

"Where is the LORD’s word?

Let it be fulfilled now."

16 As for me, I have not hurried from being a shepherd after you.

I haven’t desired the woeful day. You know.

That which came out of my lips was before your face.

17 Don’t be a terror to me.

You are my refuge in the day of evil.

18 Let them be disappointed who persecute me,

but let not me be disappointed.

Let them be dismayed,

but don’t let me be dismayed.

Bring on them the day of evil,

and destroy them with double destruction.

19 The LORD said this to me: "Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, through which the kings of Judah come in and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem. 20 Tell them, ‘Hear the LORD’s word, you kings of Judah, all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates: 21 The LORD says, "Be careful, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem. 22 Don’t carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day. Don’t do any work, but make the Sabbath day holy, as I commanded your fathers. 23 But they didn’t listen. They didn’t turn their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, and might not receive instruction. 24 It will happen, if you diligently listen to me," says the LORD, "to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but to make the Sabbath day holy, to do no work therein; 25 then there will enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on David’s throne, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and this city will remain forever. 26 They will come from the cities of Judah, and from the places around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the lowland, from the hill country, and from the South, bringing burnt offerings, sacrifices, meal offerings, and frankincense, and bringing sacrifices of thanksgiving, to the LORD’s house. 27 But if you will not listen to me to make the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem. It will not be quenched."’"

1 O meu povo peca como se fosse uma lei a que estivesse sujeito, como se tivessem a maldade gravada com estiletes de diamante ou com ponteiros de ferro sobre os seus corações de pedra, ou nos cantos dos altares.2 Os seus jovens, em todo o caso não se esquecem de pecar, de adorar os ídolos debaixo de cada árvore ramalhuda, nos cimos das colinas, ou mesmo em pleno campo aberto. É assim que darei todas as vossas riquezas aos inimigos, como preço que terão de pagar pelos pecados que praticam4 E a bela herança que vos estava reservada fugir-vos-á das mãos; mandar-vos-ei como escravos dos vossos inimigos, em terras bem longínquas. Vocês acenderam o fogo da minha ira, o qual não deixará de arder.5 Diz o Senhor: Maldito é o homem que põe a sua confiança noutro homem cujo coração se afasta de Deus, que confia na natureza humana para se fortalecer. Será semelhante a um débil cacto no deserto, sem esperança de melhores dias, vivendo em extensões de terreno ensalitrado, numa zona de estéreis desertos; tempos de prosperidade foram-se de vez, para ele.7 Abençoado é aquele que confia no Senhor; que fez do Senhor a sua esperança, a sua confiança.8 É como uma árvore plantada junto à margem dum rio, cujas raízes encontram facilmente água, que não se incomoda com os fortes calores, nem se aflige com os meses de seca. As suas folhas mantêm-se verdes, e produz sempre os melhores frutos.9 O coração é algo de muito enganador, e desesperadamente mau. Ninguém sabe na realidade como ele é ruim! Só o Senhor o sabe! Porque ele é quem pesquisa todos os corações e examina as intenções mais profundas, de forma a poder dar a cada um a recompensa que merece, de acordo com as suas acções, com o modo como vive.11 Semelhante a uma ave que põe no seu ninho crias que não foi ela quem chocou, e que em breve aprenderão a voar e a deixarão só, assim é a pessoa que junta riquezas por processos desonestos. Cedo ou tarde perdê-las-á, e acabará a sua vida como um insensato.12 Mas o nosso santuário é o teu trono, sublime, glorioso. Ó Senhor, a esperança de Israel, todos os que te deixam serão envergonhados. Os que põem de parte o Senhor, a fonte de águas vivas, serão como gente feita meramente de pó da terra, e não como seres destinados à glória eterna. Senhor, só tu podes sarar-me, só tu me podes salvar. Louvar-te-ei só a ti.15 Os outros riem-se de mim e dizem: Que palavra do Senhor é essa, de que estás aí a falar? Se essas tuas ameaças vêm realmente de Deus, então porque é que não acontecem?16 Senhor, eu não queria que esta gente fosse esmagada por tamanhas calamidades. Mas, é claro, esses planos são teus, não meus. O que eu lhes comuniquei foi uma mensagem tua, não minha. No entanto, e quanto a mim, eu não queria vê-los assim sentenciados! Senhor, não me sobressaltes agora! Só tu és o meu refúgio no meio da calamidade. Lança a confusão e a perturbação sobre todos os que me perseguem; mas a mim, dá-me paz. Sim, dá-lhes dobrada destruição!19 Então disse-me o Senhor: Vai pôr-te nas entradas de Jerusalém; primeiro, na porta por onde saem os reis; depois em cada um dos outros portais; e diz assim ao povo: Ouçam a palavra do Senhor, reis de Judá e todo o povo desta nação, assim como vocês, cidadãos de Jerusalém. O Senhor diz:21 Tenham muito cuidado e dêem atenção, para que possam viver; não façam trabalho desnecessário no dia de sábado, mas antes respeitam-no como um dia santo. Já tinha dado antes este mandamento aos vossos pais, mas eles não quiseram ouvir-me e não obedeceram. Recusaram obstinadamente dar-me atenção e serem ensinados.24 Mas se me obedecerem, diz o Senhor, e se aceitarem respeitar o dia de sábado como um dia especial, então esta nação permanecerá para sempre. Haverá sempre descendentes de David que se sentem no seu trono, aqui em Jerusalém; haverá sempre reis e príncipes deslocando-se em carros e montando cavalos em pompa e esplendor por entre o povo, e esta cidade subsistirá para sempre. De todas as terras ao redor de Jerusalém, assim como das cidades de Judá e de Benjamim, e também do Negueve e das planícies a oeste de Judá, virá povo trazendo holocaustos, ofertas de cereais e incenso, chegando-se para apresentar os seus sacrifícios de louvor ao Senhor no seu templo.27 Mas se não me ouvirem, se recusarem respeitar o sábado santo, se nesse dia trouxerem pesadas cargas de mercadorias para as passarem pelos portões das entradas de Jerusalém, fazendo tal e qual como num outro dia, então farei incendiarem-se estas portas. E esse fogo se espalhará aos palácios, que ficarão completamente destruídos, ninguém será capaz de extinguir as chamas.
