1 In those days, when there was a very great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, Yeshua called his disciples to himself, and said to them, 2 "I have compassion on the multitude, because they have stayed with me now three days, and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way."

4 His disciples answered him, "From where could one satisfy these people with bread here in a deserted place?"

5 He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?"

They said, "Seven."

6 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them, and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude. 7 They had a few small fish. Having blessed them, he said to serve these also. 8 They ate, and were filled. They took up seven baskets of broken pieces that were left over. 9 Those who had eaten were about four thousand. Then he sent them away.

10 Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the region of Dalmanutha. 11 The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, and testing him. 12 He sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation."

13 He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side. 14 They forgot to take bread; and they didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them. 15 He warned them, saying, "Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."

16 They reasoned with one another, saying, "It’s because we have no bread."

17 Yeshua, perceiving it, said to them, "Why do you reason that it’s because you have no bread? Don’t you perceive yet, neither understand? Is your heart still hardened? 18 Having eyes, don’t you see? Having ears, don’t you hear? Don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?"

They told him, "Twelve."

20 "When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?"

They told him, "Seven."

21 He asked them, "Don’t you understand yet?"

22 He came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him, and begged him to touch him. 23 He took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village. When he had spat on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.

24 He looked up, and said, "I see men; for I see them like trees walking."

25 Then again he laid his hands on his eyes. He looked intently, and was restored, and saw everyone clearly. 26 He sent him away to his house, saying, "Don’t enter into the village, nor tell anyone in the village."

27 Yeshua went out, with his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?"

28 They told him, "Yochanan the Immerser, and others say Elijah, but others, one of the prophets."

29 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Peter answered, "You are the Messiah."

30 He commanded them that they should tell no one about him. 31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke to them openly. Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But he, turning around, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men."

34 He called the multitude to himself with his disciples, and said to them, "Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it. 36 For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his life? 38 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him, when he comes in his Father’s glory, with the holy angels."

1 Um dia, por esse tempo, estando outra grande multidão reunida, o povo ficou novamente sem provisões. Jesus chamou os discípulos para estudar a situação:2 Tenho pena desta gente porque estão aqui há três dias e não ficou nada para se alimentarem.3 Se os mandar embora sem lhes dar de comer, desfalecem pelo caminho, pois alguns vêm de muito longe.4 Então, e é no deserto que vamos arranjar-lhes comida?, perguntaram os discípulos.5 Quantos pães têm vocês?, perguntou-lhes. Sete, responderam6 Mandou então a todos sentarem-se no chão e, tomando os sete pães, deu graças a Deus, partiu-os em pedaços, entregou-os aos discípulos, e estes levaram-nos ao povo.7 Encontraram-se também alguns peixinhos, que Jesus igualmente abençoou e mandou os discípulos servir.8 A multidão inteira comeu até se fartar, depois do que a mandou embora. Naquele dia havia ali cerca de quatro mil pessoas, e as sobras recolhidas depois da refeição ainda deram para encher sete cestos grandes.10 Logo a seguir entrou para um barco com os discípulos e foi para a região de Dalmanuta11 Quando os fariseus daquela terra souberam da sua chegada, procuraram-no para o experimentarem e discutirem com ele: Dá-nos um sinal do céu para provar quem tu és.12 Ao ouvir isto, sentiu-se profundamente triste.Certamente que não farei aqui nenhum milagre. De quantos mais precisarão vocês? Por isso, voltou para o barco e deixou-os, atravessando para a outra margem do lago.14 Os discípulos, contudo, tinham-se esquecido de fazer provisão de comida antes de partirem, pelo que só tinham um pão a bordo. Durante a travessia, Jesus disse-lhes muito solenemente: Tenham cuidado com o fermento do rei Herodes e com o dos fariseus.16 Que quererá dizer?, perguntavam os discípulos uns aos outros. Chegaram à conclusão de que devia referir-se ao facto de se terem esquecido de levar pão.17 Jesus percebeu o que discutiam entre si: Não, não é nada disso. Não compreendem? Será porventura o vosso coração demasiado duro para entender isto?18 Se têm olhos porque não vêem? Se têm ouvidos porque não ouvem? Já não se lembram?19 Então, e os cinco mil homens que alimentei só com cinco pães? Quantos cestos cheios de sobras recolheram depois? Doze, disseram.20 E quando alimentei os quatro mil com sete pães, quanto sobejou? Sete cestos cheios, responderam.21 Jesus disse-lhes, E ainda pensam que me preocupo por não termos pão?22 Quando chegaram a Betsaida, algumas pessoas trouxeram-lhe um cego, pedindo-lhe que tocasse nele e o curasse. Jesus tomou o cego pela mão e levou-o para fora da aldeia. Aí, cuspiu-lhe nos olhos e pôs as mãos em cima deles. Já vês alguma coisa?, perguntou a seguir.24 O homem olhou em volta: Sim! Vejo homens mas não os distingo bem; parecem troncos de árvore a andar de um lado para o outro.25 Então pôs outra vez as mãos em cima dos olhos do homem e, quando este olhou bem, tinha recuperado completamente a vista e via claramente o que se passava à sua volta. Jesus mandou-o para casa, para junto da família. Não passes sequer pela aldeia, recomendou-lhe.27 Jesus e os discípulos saíram da Galileia e foram para as vilas de Cesareia de Filipe. Enquanto caminhavam, perguntou-lhes: Quem pensa o povo que eu sou?28 Há quem diga que és João Baptista. Outros afirmam que és Elias ou algum outro profeta dos tempos antigos que voltou a viver.29 E vocês, quem pensam que eu sou? Pedro respondeu: Tu és o Messias.30 Jesus recomendou-lhes que não o dissessem a ninguém.31 A partir daí começou a falar-lhes nas coisas terríveis por que passaria - que não seria aceite pelos responsáveis do povo, nem pelos principais dos sacerdotes e nem pelos mestres da lei, que seria morto e que ressuscitaria três dias depois. Falava com eles sobre isto abertamente e Pedro o levou à parte e o repreendeu: Não deves dizer coisas assim.33 Jesus, porém, voltou-se, e depois de olhar para os discípulos, disse severamente a Pedro: Vai para trás de mim, Satanás! Vês isto só do ponto de vista humano e não do ponto de vista de Deus.34 Chamando os discípulos e o povo para o ouvirem, falou-lhes assim: Se algum de vocês quiser ser meu seguidor, deve esquecer-se de si mesmo, tomar a sua cruz e seguir-me. Se quiserem salvar a vossa vida, perdê-la-ão. Só quem abandona a sua vida por minha causa e por causa do evangelho descobrirá a vida verdadeira. Que aproveita a um homem ganhar o mundo inteiro se perder a alma? Haverá alguma coisa que valha mais do que ele próprio? Todo aquele que se envergonhar de mim e da minha mensagem nestes dias de incredulidade e pecado, eu, o Filho do Homem, me envergonharei dele quando voltar na glória de meu Pai, com os santos anjos.
