1 Immediately in the morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation, bound Yeshua, carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate. 2 Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

He answered, "So you say."

3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they testify against you!"

5 But Yeshua made no further answer, so that Pilate marveled.

6 Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him. 7 There was one called Barabbas, bound with his fellow insurgents, men who in the insurrection had committed murder. 8 The multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do as he always did for them. 9 Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" 10 For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should release Barabbas to them instead. 12 Pilate again asked them, "What then should I do to him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

13 They cried out again, "Crucify him!"

14 Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?"

But they cried out exceedingly, "Crucify him!"

15 Pilate, wishing to please the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and handed over Yeshua, when he had flogged him, to be crucified. 16 The soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they called together the whole cohort. 17 They clothed him with purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 They began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19 They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him. 20 When they had mocked him, they took the purple off him, and put his own garments on him. They led him out to crucify him. 21 They compelled one passing by, coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to go with them, that he might bear his cross. 22 They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, "The place of a skull." 23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but he didn’t take it.

24 Crucifying him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots on them, what each should take. 25 It was the third hour, and they crucified him. 26 The superscription of his accusation was written over him, "THE KING OF THE JEWS." 27 With him they crucified two robbers; one on his right hand, and one on his left. 28 The Scripture was fulfilled, which says, "He was counted with transgressors."

29 Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!"

31 Likewise, also the chief priests mocking among themselves with the scribes said, "He saved others. He can’t save himself. 32 Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him." Those who were crucified with him also insulted him.

33 When the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 At the ninth hour Yeshua cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is, being interpreted, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah."

36 One ran, and filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down."

37 Yeshua cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit. 38 The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. 39 When the centurion, who stood by opposite him, saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

40 There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Miriam Magdalene, and Miriam the mother of Jacob the less and of Yosi, and Shalom; 41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him and served him; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42 When evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent council member who also himself was looking for God’s Kingdom, came. He boldly went in to Pilate, and asked for Yeshua’s body. 44 Pilate marveled if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead long. 45 When he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 He bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of a rock. He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. 47 Miriam Magdalene and Miriam, the mother of Yosi, saw where he was laid.

1 De manhã cedo, os principais sacerdotes, os anciãos e os mestres da lei religiosa e todo o supremo tribunal reuniram-se para discutir qual a medida a tomar de seguida. A sua decisão foi a de mandar Jesus, amarrado, a Pilatos, o governador romano.2 Pilatos perguntou-lhe: És tu o rei dos judeus? Jesus respondeu: Sim, é como tu dizes.3 Então os principais sacerdotes começaram a acusá-lo de muitos crimes, e Pilatos perguntou-lhe: Porque não dizes nada? Que respondes a todas estas acusações que te são feitas? Mas Jesus não adiantou palavra, com grande espanto de Pilatos.6 Ora, Pilatos tinha por costume soltar, em cada ano por altura da Páscoa, um preso judeu, fosse quem fosse, cuja libertação o povo pedisse.7 Naquela altura estava preso um tal Barrabás, condenado juntamente com outros por assassíno durante uma revolta. Então começou a juntar-se uma multidão diante de Pilatos pedindo-lhe que soltasse um preso, como era habitual9 E se eu vos der o rei dos judeus?, perguntou Pilatos. Querem que o solte a ele?10 Porque entretanto já tinha percebido que tudo aquilo era uma conspiração apoiada pelos principais sacerdotes, por causa da fama que Jesus tinha11 Os principais sacerdotes então atiçaram o povo para que exigisse a libertação de Barrabás em vez da de Jesus.12 Mas se eu soltar Barrrabás, perguntou novamente Pilatos, que farei deste homem a quem chamam o rei dos judeus?13 E eles responderam em grande gritaria: Crucifica-o!14 Mas por que motivo?, insistiu Pilatos, Que mal fez ele? E o povo rugia cada vez mais alto: Crucifica-o!15 Pilatos, com medo de um tumulto e desejoso de agradar ao povo, soltou Barrabás e mandou açoitar Jesus, entregando-o para ser crucificado.16 Assim, os soldados romanos levaram-no para o palácio do governador e chamaram toda a guarnição. Vestindo Jesus com um manto de púrpura, fizeram uma coroa de espinhos, que lhe colocaram sobre a cabeça, saudavam-no, gritando: Viva o rei dos judeus! E batiam-lhe na cabeça com uma cana, cuspiam nele e punham-se de joelhos, fingindo que o adoravam. Quando acabaram com toda aquela troça, tiraram o manto de púrpura, vestiram-no novamente com as suas roupas e levaram-no para ser crucificado.21 Um certo Simão, cireneu, que passava por ali vindo dos campos, foi forçado a carregar a cruz de Jesus. (Este Simão era o pai de Alexandre e de Rufo.)22 Levando Jesus para um lugar chamado Gólgota (que significa caveira), ofereceram-lhe vinho misturado com ervas amargas, mas ele recusou. Então pregaram-no na cruz. E jogaram dados para ver quem ficaria com as suas roupas.25 A crucificação teve lugar cerca das nove horas da manhã. Pregaram na cruz uma tabuleta por cima da sua cabeça, com aquilo que eles chamaram o seu crime. A tabuleta dizia: O REI DOS JUDEUS.27 Naquela mesma manhã foram crucificados com ele dois malfeitores, ficando as suas cruzes à direita e à esquerda de Jesus. Assim se cumpriu a Escritura que dizia: 'Foi contado entre os malfeitores.'29 A gente que passava fazia pouco dele, abanando a cabeça. Olha lá, gritavam, insultando-o, com que então és capaz de destruir o templo e de reconstruí-lo em três dias!P30 Se és um homem tão extraordinário, salva-te a ti mesmo e desce da cruz.31 Também os principais sacerdotes e os mestres da lei religiosa que estavam ali em torno troçavam de Jesus: Sabe tão bem salvar os outros, mas não consegue salvar-se a si próprio. Escuta lá, ó Messias!, gritavam-lhe, rei de Israel! Desce da cruz e acreditaremos em ti! E até os dois malfeitores que ali foram crucificados com ele o amaldiçoavam.33 Cerca do meio dia, a terra inteira ficou em trevas, que duraram até às três horas daquela tarde.34 Então Jesus exclamou em voz muito alta: Eli, Eli, lema sabactaní?, que quer dizer Meu Deus, meu Deus, porque me abandonaste?35 Alguns dos que ali se encontravam pensaram que chamava por Elias, e assim um homem correu a arranjar uma esponja e, embebendo-a em vinho azedo, elevou-a até ele num pau . Vejamos se Elias virá para o descer!, disse.37 Então Jesus deu outro grande brado e morreu.38 A cortina do templo rasgou-se em dois pedaços, de cima a baixo.39 Quando o oficial romano que estava junto à cruz viu como Jesus morrera, exclamou: Verdadeiramente era o Filho de Deus!40 Estavam ali algumas mulheres vendo a cena à distância, Maria Madalena, Maria (mãe de Tiago, o mais novo, e de José) e Salomé, assim como outras. Estas e muitas mais mulheres da Galileia que eram seguidoras de Jesus haviam cuidado dele quando andara por aquela província, e tinham-no acompanhado até Jerusalém.42 Tudo isto aconteceu na véspera do sábado. Ao fim da tarde, José de Arimateia, membro respeitado do supremo tribunal, e que aguardava com ansiedade a vinda do reino de Deus, encheu-se de coragem e pediu a Pilatos o corpo de Jesus.44 Pilatos não acreditava que Jesus tivesse já morrido e, por isso, chamando o oficial romano, perguntou se era verdade. O oficial respondeu que sim, e Pilatos deixou José levar o corpo.46 José comprou então uma longa peça de pano de linho e, descendo o corpo de Jesus, embrulhou-o no pano e depositou-o num túmulo escavado numa parede de rocha, em seguida rolou uma pedra para tapar a entrada.-47 Maria Madalena e Maria, mãe de José, viram onde o corpo de Jesus foi colocado.
