1 "Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!" says the LORD of Hosts. 2 "But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like launderers’ soap; 3 and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer to the LORD offerings in righteousness. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasant to the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years. 5 I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me," says the LORD of Hosts. 6 "For I, the LORD, don’t change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed. 7 From the days of your fathers you have turned away from my ordinances, and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says the LORD of Hosts. "But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ 8 Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with the curse; for you rob me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this," says the LORD of Hosts, "if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there will not be room enough for. 11 I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before its time in the field," says the LORD of Hosts. 12 "All nations shall call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land," says the LORD of Hosts.

13 "Your words have been stout against me," says the LORD. "Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God;’ and ‘What profit is it that we have followed his instructions, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of Hosts? 15 Now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are built up; yes, they tempt God, and escape.’ 16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke one with another; and the LORD listened, and heard, and a book of memory was written before him, for those who feared the LORD, and who honored his name. 17 They shall be mine," says the LORD of Hosts, "my own possession in the day that I make, and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him. 18 Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn’t serve him.

1 Escutem: enviarei o meu mensageiro perante mim, para me preparar o caminho. E então, o Senhor a quem buscam virá de repente ao seu templo; o mensageiro da aliança, a quem vocês desejam. Sim, ele virá com toda a certeza, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais.2 Mas quem poderá sobreviver quando ele aparecer? Quem poderá suportar a sua vinda? Porque é como um fogo flamejante, refinando o metal precioso e branqueando o mais sujo vestuário!3 Tal como um perito em refinar a prata, sentar-se-á, observando cuidadosamente, enquanto a escória vai escorrendo. Purificará os levitas, os ministros de Deus, purificando-os como o ouro e a prata, para que possam fazer o trabalho de Deus com corações puros.4 Então, uma vez mais, o Senhor terá prazer nas ofertas que lhe sejam trazidas pelo povo de Judá e de Jerusalém, tal como antes5 Nesse tempo os meus castigos serão rápidos e certos; mover-me-ei destramente contra os que praticam bruxarias, contra os adúlteros, contra os mentirosos, contra todos os que enganam os seus empregados, que oprimem as viúvas e os órfãos, que desfraudam os estrangeiros e que não me temem, diz o Senhor Deus dos exércitos celestiais.6 Porque eu sou o Senhor - não mudo. Por isso é que vocês ainda não foram totalmente destruídos.7 Ainda que tenham feito troça das minhas leis logo desde os primeiros tempos, mesmo assim, ainda podem voltar para mim, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais. Venham e vos perdoarei as vocês dizem: 'Nós nunca te abandonámos!'8 Poderá um homem roubar Deus? Com certeza que não! Mas vocês roubam-me.'Que quer isso dizer? Como é que te roubámos?'Nos dízimos e nas ofertas que me devem9 E assim a terrível maldição de Deus recai sobre vocês, porque é toda a nação que me tem roubado.10 Tragam todos os dízimos à casa do tesouro, para que haja alimento suficiente no meu templo. Se assim fizerem, abrirei as janelas do céu e derramarei bênção tão abundante sobre vocês que nem sequer arranjarão espaço para a receber! Experimentem! Deixem-me que vos dê prova disso!11 As searas serão abundantes porque as preservarei dos insectos e das pragas. As vinhas não secarão antes das vindimas, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais12 Todas as nações vos chamarão abençoados, porque a terra espalhará felicidade. Isto é o que vos promete o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais.13 A vossa atitude para comigo tem sido de altivez e arrogância, diz o Senhor. Mas vocês dizem: 'Que queres dizer com isso? O que é que foi que dissemos contra ti?'14 Prestem atenção! Vocês dizem assim: 'É uma coisa inútil e sem sentido o adorar Deus e obedecer-lhe. Para que serve cumprir os seus mandamentos, lamentarmo-nos e arrependermo-nos pelos nossos pecados?15 Portanto daqui em diante, quanto a nós: Abençoados serão os soberbos! Porque os que praticam o mal prosperam, e os que ousam enfrentar os castigos divinos, escapam.'16 Então os que temeram e amaram o Senhor falaram dele, uns aos outros. E num livro de memorial, diante de Deus, foram registados os nomes dos que o temem e centram nele o seu pensamento.17 Serão meus, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais. Nesse dia serão como o meu tesouro particular. Poupá-los-ei como um homem poupa o seu filho obediente e fiel.18 Verão então a diferença que Deus faz entre os justos e os ímpios, entre os que o servem e os que o não servem.
