1 "Now, you priests, this commandment is for you. 2 If you will not listen, and if you will not take it to heart, to give glory to my name," says the LORD of Hosts, "then I will send the curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have cursed them already, because you do not take it to heart. 3 Behold, I will rebuke your offspring, and will spread dung on your faces, even the dung of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it. 4 You will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that my covenant may be with Levi," says the LORD of Hosts. 5 "My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him that he might be reverent toward me; and he was reverent toward me, and stood in awe of my name. 6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity. 7 For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of Hosts. 8 But you have turned away from the path. You have caused many to stumble in the law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi," says the LORD of Hosts. 9 "Therefore I have also made you contemptible and wicked before all the people, according to the way you have not kept my ways, but have had respect for persons in the law. 10 Don’t we all have one father? Hasn’t one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11 Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. 12 The LORD will cut off, to the man who does this, him who wakes and him who answers, out of the tents of Jacob, and him who offers an offering to the LORD of Hosts. 13 This again you do: you cover the LORD’s altar with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, because he doesn’t regard the offering any more, neither receives it with good will at your hand. 14 Yet you say, ‘Why?’ Because the LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant. 15 Did he not make you one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? Why one? He sought godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 16 One who hates and divorces", says the LORD, the God of Israel, "covers his garment with violence!" says the LORD of Hosts. "Therefore pay attention to your spirit, that you don’t be unfaithful. 17 You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you say, ‘How have we wearied him?’ In that you say, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the LORD’s sight, and he delights in them;’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’

1 Ouçam, ó sacerdotes, este aviso que vos dá o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais:2 Se não modificarem a vossa conduta e não derem glória ao meu nome, mandar-vos-ei uma terrível punição e em vez de vos dar bênção, como gostaria de fazer, voltar-me-ei contra vocês com maldição. Na verdade, até já vos amaldiçoei, porque não levaram a sério as coisas que reputo por mais importantes.3 Repreenderei os vossos filhos e espalharei sobre as vossas faces o esterco desses animais que me ofereceram. Afastar-vos-ei como se faz ao estrume.4 Por fim saberão que fui eu quem vos mandou este aviso para tornarem a obedecer às leis que dei ao vosso pai Levi, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais.5 O propósito dessas leis era de dar vida e paz, e de mostrar reverência e temor por mim, obedecendo-lhes6 Ele passou ao povo toda a verdade que recebeu de mim. Não mentiu, não enganou; andou na minha presença, vivendo de forma justa e recta, desviando muitos dos caminhos do pecado.7 Dos lábios dos sacerdotes deveria escorrer o conhecimento de Deus, de forma a que o povo aprendesse as leis do Senhor. Os sacerdotes são mensageiros do Senhor dos exércitos celestiais; os homens deveriam vir ter com eles para obterem directivas.8 Mas vocês, não é assim que fazem! Abandonaram os caminhos de Deus. As vossas directivas levaram muitos a caírem no pecado. Vocês distorceram a aliança com Levi, e tornaram-na numa farsa grotesca, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais9 Por isso vos fiz desprezíveis aos olhos do povo todo; porque não quiseram obedecer-me, usaram de parcialidade para com os vossos favoritos que quebraram a lei sem serem castigados.10 Somos filhos do mesmo pai, Abraão; fomos criados pelo mesmo Deus. Apesar disso somos desleais uns para com os outros, violando a aliança que nossos pais celebraram!11 Em Judá, em Israel, em Jerusalém, apenas se vê engano, porque a gente de Judá profanou o santo e querido templo de Deus, casando com mulheres gentias adoradoras de ídolos12 Que o Senhor extirpe da sua aliança, completamente, todos aqueles, sacerdotes ou não, que tenham feito tal coisa!13 E ainda cobrem o altar com lágrimas, porque o Senhor não dá mais atenção às vossas ofertas, e não recebem nenhuma bênção dele.14 'Porque é que o Senhor nos abandonou?15 Nos justos planos de Deus, quando casaram, os dois tornaram-se num só, aos seus olhos. E que pretende Deus? Filhos saídos da vossa união que andem nos seus caminhos. Por isso, guardem as vossas paixonetas! Sejam fiéis à mulher da vossa mocidade.16 Porque o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, diz que repudia o divórcio assim como aquele que se cobre de violência como uma roupa. Portanto, tenham cuidado convosco - não sejam infiéis às vossas mulheres.17 Têm desgostado o Senhor com as vossas palavras.'Desgostado, nós? Como é que o desgostamos?'É quando dizem que praticar o mal, aos olhos do Senhor, vem a dar no mesmo que praticar o bem, e que é dos que fazem o mal que o Senhor se agrada, no fundo. E depois acabam por exclamar: 'Onde estará o Deus de justiça?'
