1 A revelation, the LORD’s word to Israel by Malachi.

2 "I have loved you," says the LORD.

Yet you say, "How have you loved us?"

"Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?" says the LORD, "Yet I loved Jacob; 3 but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness." 4 Whereas Edom says, "We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places;" the LORD of Hosts says, "They shall build, but I will throw down; and men will call them ‘The Wicked Land,’ even the people against whom the LORD shows wrath forever."

5 Your eyes will see, and you will say, "The LORD is great—even beyond the border of Israel!"

6 "A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, then where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? Says the LORD of Hosts to you, priests, who despise my name. You say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ 7 You offer polluted bread on my altar. You say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ In that you say, ‘The LORD’s table is contemptible.’ 8 When you offer the blind for sacrifice, isn’t that evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, isn’t that evil? Present it now to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? Or will he accept your person?" says the LORD of Hosts.

9 "Now, please entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With this, will he accept any of you?" says the LORD of Hosts.

10 "Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you," says the LORD of Hosts, "neither will I accept an offering at your hand. 11 For from the rising of the sun even to its going down, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name is great among the nations," says the LORD of Hosts. 12 "But you profane it, in that you say, ‘The LORD’s table is polluted, and its fruit, even its food, is contemptible.’ 13 You say also, ‘Behold, what a weariness it is!’ and you have sniffed at it", says the LORD of Hosts; "and you have brought that which was taken by violence, the lame, and the sick; thus you bring the offering. Should I accept this at your hand?" says the LORD.

14 "But the deceiver is cursed, who has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to the Lord a defective thing; for I am a great King," says the LORD of Hosts, "and my name is awesome among the nations."

1 Esta é a mensagem do Senhor a Israel, comunicada pela boca do profeta Malaquias:2 Eu amei-vos!, diz o Senhor esponderam vocês: Como e quando é que nos amaste? Mostrei-vos o meu amor amando o vosso pai Jacob. Rejeitei o seu próprio irmão Esaú, e destruí a montanha e a herança de Esaú para a dar aos chacais no deserto.4 Ainda que os seus descendentes digam: 'Tornaremos a reconstruir sobre ruínas5 Ó Israel, levanta os olhos e vê o que Deus está a fazer em todo o mundo. Então dirão vocês: 'Verdadeiramente o grande poder do Senhor manifestou-se para além das nossas fronteiras!'6 Um filho honra o seu pai; um servo honra o seu senhor. Eu sou vosso pai e vosso Senhor e contudo os sacerdotes não me prestam honra nenhuma; antes desprezam o meu nome. Dizem vocês: 'Quando é que desprezámos o teu nome?'7 Quando oferecem sacrifícios imundos no meu altar.'Sacrifícios imundos? Alguma vez fizemos uma coisa dessas?'Sim, sempre que dizem: 'Não se incomodem em trazer qualquer coisa de muito valiosa para oferecer ao Senhor!'8 Vocês aconselham ao povo: 'Um animal coxo chega bem para oferecer no altar do Senhor mesmo que seja doente ou cego'. E ousam ainda afirmar que isto não é mal? Façam o mesmo com o vosso governador - tentem dar-lhe de presente um animal assim - e verifiquem se fica satisfeito!9 'Deus tenha piedade de nós10 Oh, quem me dera encontrar no vosso meio um sacerdote que feche as portas e recuse aceitar esse tipo de sacrifício. Não tenho prazer em vocês, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, e não aceitarei as vossas ofertas.11 Mas o meu nome será honrado pelas nações, do Oriente ao Ocidente. Em todo o mundo oferecerão sacrifícios agradáveis de incenso e ofertas puras em honra do meu nome, o qual se tornará grande entre nações, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais.12 Mas vocês desonram-no dizendo que o meu altar não é digno de muita importância, e encorajam o meu povo a trazer-me animais aleijados, doentes, para mos oferecer nele.13 Dizem vocês: 'Oh, é tão difícil servir o Senhor e fazer o que ele pede'. E viram a cara aos mandamentos que vos deu para cumprirem. Ponderem! Animais roubados, coxos e doentes, oferecidos a Deus! Poderia eu aceitar tais ofertas?, pergunta o Senhor.14 Maldito o homem que promete um belo animal do seu rebanho e acaba por substituí-lo por outro, doente, para o sacrificar a Deus. Eu sou um grande rei, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais. O meu nome é para ser profundamente reverenciado entre os gentios.
