Provérbios 18

1 Busca satisfazer seu próprio

desejo aquele que se isola;

ele se insurge contra toda sabedoria.

2 O tolo não tem

prazer na sabedoria,

mas só em que se manifeste

aquilo que agrada o seu coração.

3 Vindo o ímpio,

vem também o desprezo,

e com a ignomínia a vergonha.

4 Águas profundas são

as palavras da boca do homem,

e ribeiro transbordante

é a fonte da sabedoria.

5 Não é bom favorecer o ímpio,

e com isso,

fazer o justo

perder a questão.

6 Os lábios do tolo

entram na contenda,

e a sua boca brada por açoites.

7 A boca do tolo é

a sua própria destruição,

e os seus lábios

um laço para a sua alma.

8 As palavras do intrigante

são como feridas;

elas descem

ao íntimo do ventre.

9 O que é negligente

na sua obra é também irmão

de um grande desperdiçador.

10 Torre forte é o nome do Senhor;

a ela correrá o justo,

e estará em alto refúgio.

11 Os bens do rico são

a sua cidade forte,

e como uma alta muralha

na sua imaginação.

12 O coração do homem se

exalta antes de ser abatido

e diante da honra vai a humildade.

13 O que responde antes de ouvir comete

estultícia que é para vergonha sua.

14 O espírito do homem

susterá a sua enfermidade,

mas ao espírito abatido,

quem o suportará?

15 O coração do entendido

adquire o conhecimento,

e o ouvido dos sábios

busca a sabedoria.

16 Com presentes

o homem alarga

o seu caminho e o leva

diante dos grandes.

17 O que pleiteia por algo,

a princípio parece justo,

porém vem o seu próximo e o examina.

18 A sorte faz cessar os pleitos,

e faz separação

entre os poderosos.

19 O irmão ofendido é mais difícil

de conquistar do que uma cidade forte;

e as contendas são como

os ferrolhos de um palácio.

20 Do fruto da boca de cada

um se fartará o seu ventre;

dos renovos dos seus lábios

ficará satisfeito.

21 A morte e a vida estão

no poder da língua;

e aquele que a ama

comerá do seu fruto.

22 Aquele que encontra uma esposa,

acha o bem,

e alcança a benevolência do Senhor.

23 O pobre fala com rogos,

mas o rico responde com dureza.

24 O homem de muitos amigos

deve mostrar-se amigável,

mas há um amigo mais chegado do que um irmão.

1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.*18.1 Through…: or, He that separateth himself seeketh according to his desire, and intermeddleth in every business 2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself. 3 When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach. 4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. 5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. 7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. 8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.*18.8 talebearer: or, whisperer*18.8 as wounds: or, like as when men are wounded*18.8 innermost…: Heb. chambers 9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster. 10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.*18.10 safe: Heb. set aloft 11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit. 12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility. 13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.*18.13 answereth…: Heb. returneth a word 14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? 15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge. 16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. 17 He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him. 18 The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty. 19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. 20 A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled. 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. 22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. 23 The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly. 24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
