1 Depois partiram os filhos de Israel, e acamparam-se nas campinas de Moabe, além do Jordão na altura de Jericó.2 Vendo, pois, Balaque, filho de Zipor, tudo o que Israel fizera aos amorreus,3 Moabe temeu muito diante deste povo, porque era numeroso; e Moabe andava angustiado por causa dos filhos de Israel.4 Por isso Moabe disse aos anciãos dos midianitas: Agora lamberá esta congregação tudo quanto houver ao redor de nós, como o boi lambe a erva do campo. Naquele tempo Balaque, filho de Zipor, era rei dos moabitas.5 Este enviou mensageiros a Balaão, filho de Beor, a Petor, que está junto ao rio, na terra dos filhos do seu povo, a chamá-lo, dizendo: Eis que um povo saiu do Egito; eis que cobre a face da terra, e está parado defronte de mim.6 Vem, pois, agora, rogo-te, amaldiçoa-me este povo, pois mais poderoso é do que eu; talvez o poderei ferir e lançar fora da terra; porque eu sei que, a quem tu abençoares será abençoado, e a quem tu amaldiçoares será amaldiçoado.7 Então foram-se os anciãos dos moabitas e os anciãos dos midianitas com o preço dos encantamentos nas suas mãos; e chegaram a Balaão, e disseram-lhe as palavras de Balaque.8 E ele lhes disse: Passai aqui esta noite, e vos trarei a resposta, como o Senhor me falar; então os príncipes dos moabitas ficaram com Balaão.9 E veio Deus a Balaão, e disse: Quem são estes homens que estão contigo?10 E Balaão disse a Deus: Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei dos moabitas, os enviou a mim, dizendo:11 Eis que o povo que saiu do Egito cobre a face da terra; vem agora, amaldiçoa-o; porventura poderei pelejar contra ele e expulsá-lo.12 Então disse Deus a Balaão: Não irás com eles, nem amaldiçoarás a este povo, porquanto é bendito.13 Então Balaão levantou-se pela manhã, e disse aos príncipes de Balaque: Ide à vossa terra, porque o Senhor recusa deixar-me ir convosco.14 E levantaram-se os príncipes dos moabitas, e vieram a Balaque, e disseram: Balaão recusou vir conosco.15 Porém Balaque tornou a enviar mais príncipes, mais honrados do que aqueles.16 Os quais foram a Balaão, e lhe disseram: Assim diz Balaque, filho de Zipor: Rogo-te que não te demores em vir a mim.17 Porque grandemente te honrarei, e farei tudo o que me disseres; vem pois, rogo-te, amaldiçoa-me este povo.18 Então Balaão respondeu, e disse aos servos de Balaque: Ainda que Balaque me desse a sua casa cheia de prata e de ouro, eu não poderia ir além da ordem do Senhor meu Deus, para fazer coisa pequena ou grande;19 Agora, pois, rogo-vos que também aqui fiqueis esta noite, para que eu saiba o que mais o Senhor me dirá.20 Veio, pois, Deus a Balaão, de noite, e disse-lhe: Se aqueles homens te vieram chamar, levanta-te, vai com eles; todavia, farás o que eu te disser.21 Então Balaão levantou-se pela manhã, e albardou a sua jumenta, e foi com os príncipes de Moabe.22 E a ira de Deus acendeu-se, porque ele se ia; e o anjo do Senhor pôs-se-lhe no caminho por adversário; e ele ia caminhando, montado na sua jumenta, e dois de seus servos com ele.23 Viu, pois, a jumenta o anjo do Senhor, que estava no caminho, com a sua espada desembainhada na mão; pelo que desviou-se a jumenta do caminho, indo pelo campo; então Balaão espancou a jumenta para fazê-la tornar ao caminho.24 Mas o anjo do Senhor pôs-se numa vereda entre as vinhas, havendo uma parede de um lado e uma parede do outro lado.25 Vendo, pois, a jumenta, o anjo do Senhor, encostou-se contra a parede, e apertou contra a parede o pé de Balaão; por isso tornou a espancá-la.26 Então o anjo do Senhor passou mais adiante, e pôs-se num lugar estreito, onde não havia caminho para se desviar nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.27 E, vendo a jumenta o anjo do Senhor, deitou-se debaixo de Balaão; e a ira de Balaão acendeu-se, e espancou a jumenta com o cajado.28 Então o Senhor abriu a boca da jumenta, a qual disse a Balaão: Que te fiz eu, que me espancaste estas três vezes?29 E Balaão disse à jumenta: Porque zombaste de mim; quem dera tivesse eu uma espada na mão, porque agora te mataria.30 E a jumenta disse a Balaão: Porventura não sou a tua jumenta, em que cavalgaste desde o tempo em que me tornei tua até hoje? Acaso tem sido o meu costume fazer assim contigo? E ele respondeu: Não.31 Então o Senhor abriu os olhos a Balaão, e ele viu o anjo do Senhor, que estava no caminho e a sua espada desembainhada na mão; pelo que inclinou a cabeça, e prostrou-se sobre a sua face.32 Então o anjo do Senhor lhe disse: Por que já três vezes espancaste a tua jumenta? Eis que eu saí para ser teu adversário, porquanto o teu caminho é perverso diante de mim;33 Porém a jumenta me viu, e já três vezes se desviou de diante de mim; se ela não se desviasse de diante de mim, na verdade que eu agora te haveria matado, e a ela deixaria com vida.34 Então Balaão disse ao anjo do Senhor: Pequei, porque não sabia que estavas neste caminho para te opores a mim; e agora, se parece mal aos teus olhos, voltarei.35 E disse o anjo do Senhor a Balaão: Vai-te com estes homens; mas somente a palavra que eu falar a ti, esta falarás. Assim Balaão se foi com os príncipes de Balaque.36 Ouvindo, pois, Balaque que Balaão vinha, saiu-lhe ao encontro até à cidade de Moabe, que está no termo de Arnom, na extremidade do termo dele.37 E Balaque disse a Balaão: Porventura não enviei diligentemente a chamar-te? Por que não vieste a mim? Não posso eu na verdade honrar-te?38 Então Balaão disse a Balaque: Eis que eu tenho vindo a ti; porventura poderei eu agora de alguma forma falar alguma coisa? A palavra que Deus puser na minha boca, essa falarei.39 E Balaão foi com Balaque, e chegaram a Quiriate-Huzote.40 Então Balaque matou bois e ovelhas; e deles enviou a Balaão e aos príncipes que estavam com ele.41 E sucedeu que, pela manhã Balaque tomou a Balaão, e o fez subir aos altos de Baal, e viu ele dali a última parte do povo.

1 And the children of Israel set forward, and encamped in the plains of Moab, on this side of the Jordan, opposite Jericho.2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Emorites.3 And Moab was greatly afraid of the people, because it was numerous; and Moab was horrified because of the children of Israel.4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this assemblage devour all that is round about us, as the ox devoureth the grass of the field; and Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.5 And he sent messengers unto Bil’am the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river, in the land of the children of his people, to have him called; saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, it covereth the surface of the earth, and it is abiding opposite to me:6 And now do but come, curse me this people; for it is too mighty for me; peradventure I may be able to smite it, that I may drive it out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bil’am, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.8 And he said unto them, Remain you here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord may speak unto me; and the princes of Moab abode with Bil’am.9 And God came unto Bil’am, and said, Who are these men with thee?10 And Bil’am said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,11 Behold, there is the people that is come out of Egypt, and covereth the face of the earth: now come, denounce it for me; peradventure I shall be able to fight against it, and drive it away.12 And God said unto Bil’am, Thou shalt not go with them: thou shalt not curse the people; for it is blessed.13 And Bil’am rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Go back to your land; for the Lord refuseth to give me leave to go with you.14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Bil’am refuseth to come with us.15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more in number, and more honorable than those.16 And they came to Bil’am, and said to him, Thus hath said Balak the son of Zippor, Do not suffer thyself, I pray thee, to be prevented from coming unto me;17 For I will honor thee greatly, and whatsoever thou mayest say unto me will I do: and only come, I pray thee, denounce me this people.18 And Bil’am answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not transgress the order of the Lord my God, to do a small or a great thing.19 And now, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will farther speak with me.20 And God came unto Bil’am at night, and said unto him, If to call thee the men have come, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I shall speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.21 And Bil’am rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.22 And the anger of God was kindled, because he went; and an angel of the Lord placed himself in the way to be a hindrance to him; and he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.23 And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Bil’am smote the ass, to make her turn into the way.24 But the angel of the Lord stepped into a path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side, and a wall on that side.25 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she forced herself against the wall, and pressed Bil’am’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.26 And the angel of the Lord went yet farther, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.27 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Bil’am: whereupon Bil’am’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a stick.28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Bil’am, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?29 And Bil’am said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: had I but a sword in my hand, I would assuredly have now killed thee.30 And the ass said unto Bil’am, Am not I thy ass, upon which thou hast ridden from thy commencement unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, No.31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Bil’am, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head and prostrated himself on his face.32 And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thy ass these three times? behold, I went out to be a hindrance; because the journey which is odious to me was too quickly begun.33 And the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; if she had not turned aside from me, I would surely now not only have slain thee, but saved her alive.34 And Bil’am said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou wast standing against me in the way; but now, if it be evil in thy eyes, I will return home again.35 And the angel of the Lord said unto Bil’am, Go with the men; however, only the word which I will speak unto thee, that shalt thou speak: and Bil’am went with the princes of Balak.36 And when Balak heard that Bil’am was come, he went out to meet him unto ‘Ir–Moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is at the outmost end of the boundary.37 And Balak said unto Bil’am, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to have thee called? wherefore camest thou not unto me? in truth, am I not able to honor thee?38 And Bil’am said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee; have I now any power whatever to speak the least? the word that God may put in my mouth, that alone must I speak.39 And Bil’am went with Balak, and they came unto Kiryath–chuzoth.40 And Balak slew oxen and sheep, and sent to Bil’am and to the princes that were with him.41 And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Bil’am, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, and he saw thence a portion of the people.
