1 A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.3 A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the fraudulent: he that does keep his soul shall be far from them.6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.7 The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.8 He that sows iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.9 He that has a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he gives of his bread to the poor.10 Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yes, strife and reproach shall cease.11 He that loves pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.12 The eyes of the LORD preserve knowledge, and he overthrows the words of the transgressor.13 The slothful man said, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.16 He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches, and he that gives to the rich, shall surely come to want.17 Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge.18 For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; they shall with be fitted in your lips.19 That your trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to you this day, even to you.20 Have not I written to you excellent things in counsels and knowledge,21 That I might make you know the certainty of the words of truth; that you might answer the words of truth to them that send to you?22 Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:23 For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.24 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man you shall not go:25 Lest you learn his ways, and get a snare to your soul.26 Be not you one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.27 If you have nothing to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.29 See you a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

1 La fama è più a pregiare che grandi ricchezze; E la buona grazia più che argento, e che oro2 Il ricco e il povero si scontrano l’un l’altro; Il Signore è quello che li ha fatti tutti3 L’uomo avveduto vede il male, e si nasconde; Ma gli scempi passano oltre, e ne portano pena4 Il premio della mansuetudine e del timor del Signore È ricchezze, e gloria, e vita5 Spine e lacci son nella via dell’uomo perverso; Chi guarda l’anima sua sarà lungi da queste cose6 Ammaestra il fanciullo, secondo la via ch’egli ha da tenere; Egli non si dipartirà da essa, non pur quando sarà diventato vecchio7 Il ricco signoreggia sopra i poveri; E chi prende in prestanza è servo del prestatore8 Chi semina iniquità mieterà vanità; E la verga della sua indegnazione verrà meno9 L’uomo che è d’occhio benigno sarà benedetto; Perciocchè egli ha dato del suo pane al povero10 Caccia lo schernitore, e le contese usciranno fuori; E le liti, ed i vituperi cesseranno11 Chi ama la purità del cuore Avrà il re per amico, per la grazia delle sue labbra12 Gli occhi del Signore guardano l’uomo dotato di conoscimento; Ma egli sovverte i fatti del disleale13 Il pigro dice: Il leone è fuori; Io sarei ucciso per le campagne14 La bocca delle donne straniere è una fossa profonda; Colui contro a cui il Signore è indegnato vi caderà dentro15 La follia è attaccata al cuor del fanciullo; La verga della correzione la dilungherà da lui16 Chi fa torto al povero, per accrescere il suo, E chi dona al ricco, di certo caderà in inopia17 INCHINA il tuo orecchio, ed ascolta le parole de’ Savi, E reca il tuo cuore alla dottrina.18 Perciocchè ti sarà cosa soave, se tu le guardi nel tuo cuore, E se tutte insieme sono adattate in su le tue labbra.19 Io te le ho pur fatte assapere, Acciocchè la tua confidanza sia nel Signore.20 Non ti ho io scritto cose eccellenti In consigli e in dottrina?21 Per farti conoscere la certezza delle parole di verità; Acciocchè tu possa rispondere parole di verità a quelli che ti manderanno22 Non predare il povero, perchè egli è povero; E non oppressar l’afflitto nella porta;23 Perciocchè il Signore difenderà la causa loro, Ed involerà l’anima di coloro che li avranno involati24 Non accompagnarti con l’uomo collerico; E non andar con l’uomo iracondo;25 Che talora tu non impari i suoi costumi, E non prenda un laccio all’anima tua26 Non esser di quelli che percuotono nella palma della mano, Nè di quelli che fanno sicurtà per debiti.27 Per qual cagione, se tu non avessi da pagare, Ti si torrebbe egli il letto di sotto? 28 Non rimuovere il termine antico, Che i tuoi padri hanno posto29 Hai tu mai veduto un uomo spedito nelle sue faccende? Un tale comparirà nel cospetto del re, E non comparirà davanti a gente bassa
