1 Dar adu-ţi aminte de Făcătorul tău în zilele tinereţei tale, pînă nu vin zilele cele rele şi pînă nu se apropie anii, cînd vei zice: ,,Nu găsesc nici o plăcere în ei``;

2 pînă nu se întunecă soarele, şi lumina, luna şi stelele, şi pînă nu se întorc norii îndată după ploaie;

3 pînă nu încep să tremure paznicii casei (mînile), şi să se încovoaie cele tari (picioarele); pînă nu se opresc ceice macină (dinţii), căci s'au împuţinat; pînă nu se întunecă ceice se uită pe ferestre (ochii);

4 pînă nu se închid cele două uşi dinspre uliţă (buzele), cînd uruitul morii slăbeşte, te scoli la ciripitul unei pasări, glasul tuturor cîntăreţelor se aude înăbuşit,

5 te temi de orice înălţime, şi te sperii pe drum; pînă nu înfloreşte migdalul cu peri albi, şi de abea se tîrăşte lăcusta, pînă nu-ţi trec poftele, căci omul merge spre casa lui cea vecinică, şi bocitorii cutreieră uliţele;

6 pînă nu se rupe funia de argint, pînă nu se sfarmă vasul de aur, pînă nu se sparge găleata la izvor, şi pînă nu se strică roata dela fîntînă;

7 pînă nu se întoarce ţărîna în pămînt, cum a fost, şi pînă nu se întoarce duhul la Dumnezeu, care l -a dat.

8 O, deşertăciune a deşertăciunilor, zice Eclesiastul; totul este deşertăciune.

9 Pe lîngă că Eclesiastul a fost înţelept, el a mai învăţat şi ştiinţa pe popor, a cercetat, a adîncit şi a întocmit un mare număr de zicători.

10 Eclesiastul a căutat să afle cuvinte plăcute, şi să scrie întocmai cuvintele adevărului.

11 Cuvintele înţelepţilor sînt ca nişte bolduri; şi, strînse la un loc, sînt ca nişte cuie bătute, date de un singur stăpîn.

12 Încolo, fiule, ia învăţătură din aceste lucruri; dacă ai voi să faci o mulţime de cărţi, să ştii că n'ai mai isprăvi, şi multă învăţătură oboseşte trupul.

13 Să ascultăm dar încheierea tuturor învăţăturilor: Teme-te de Dumnezeu şi păzeşte poruncile Lui. Aceasta este datoria oricărui om.

14 Căci Dumnezeu va aduce orice faptă la judecată, şi judecata aceasta se va face cu privire la tot ce este ascuns, fie bine, fie rău

1 Remember also thy Creators in days of thy youth, While that the evil days come not, Nor the years have arrived, that thou sayest, `I have no pleasure in them.`

2 While that the sun is not darkened, and the light, And the moon, and the stars, And the thick clouds returned after the rain.

3 In the day that keepers of the house tremble, And men of strength have bowed themselves, And grinders have ceased, because they have become few. And those looking out at the windows have become dim,

4 And doors have been shut in the street. When the noise of the grinding is low, And [one] riseth at the voice of the bird, And all daughters of song are bowed down.

5 Also of that which is high they are afraid, And of the low places in the way, And the almond-tree is despised, And the grasshopper is become a burden, And want is increased, For man is going unto his home age-during, And the mourners have gone round through the street.

6 While that the silver cord is not removed, And the golden bowl broken, And the pitcher broken by the fountain, And the wheel broken at the well.

7 And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.

8 Vanity of vanities, said the preacher, the whole [is] vanity.

9 And further, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge, and gave ear, and sought out -- he made right many similes.

10 The preacher sought to find out pleasing words, and, written [by] the upright, words of truth.

11 Words of the wise [are] as goads, and as fences planted [by] the masters of collections, they have been given by one shepherd.

12 And further, from these, my son, be warned; the making of many books hath no end, and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh.

13 The end of the whole matter let us hear: -- `Fear God, and keep His commands, for this [is] the whole of man.

14 For every work doth God bring into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether good or bad.`
