1 And this is what the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, allotted for inheritance to them:
2 their inheritance was by lot, as Jehovah had commanded by Moses, for the nine tribes, and the half tribe.
3 For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them.
4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; and they gave no part to the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, and their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.
5 As Jehovah had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land.
6 Then the children of Judah came near to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, Thou knowest the word that Jehovah spoke to Moses the man of God, concerning me and thee, in Kadesh-barnea.
7 Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to search out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.
8 And my brethren that had gone up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed Jehovah my God.
9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, The land whereon thy feet have trodden shall assuredly be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever! for thou hast wholly followed Jehovah my God.
10 And now behold, Jehovah has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years, since Jehovah spoke this word to Moses, when Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now behold, I am this day eighty-five years old.
11 I am still this day strong, as in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out and to come in.
12 And now give me this mountain, of which Jehovah spoke in that day; for thou heardest in that day that Anakim are there, and great fortified cities. If so be Jehovah shall be with me, then I shall dispossess them, as Jehovah said.
13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.
14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed Jehovah the God of Israel.
15 Now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-Arba; the great man among the Anakim. And the land rested from war.
1 Ce sont ici [les terres] que les enfants d'Israël eurent pour héritage au pays de Canaan, qu'Eléazar le Sacrificateur, et Josué, fils de Nun, et les chefs des pères des Tribus des enfants d'Israël leur partagèrent en héritage.
2 Selon le sort de leur héritage, comme l'Eternel l'avait commandé par le moyen de Moïse, [savoir] à neuf Tribus, et à la moitié d'une Tribu.
3 Car Moïse avait donné un héritage à deux Tribus, et à la moitié d'une Tribu au delà du Jourdain, mais il n'avait point donné d'héritage parmi eux aux Lévites.
4 Parce que les enfants de Joseph, [savoir], Manassé et Ephraïm, faisaient deux Tribus; et on ne donna point de part aux Lévites dans le pays, excepté les villes pour y habiter avec leurs fauxbourgs pour leurs troupeaux, et pour [le reste de] leur bien.
5 Les enfants d'Israël firent comme l'Eternel l'avait commandé à Moïse, et ils partagèrent la terre.
6 Or les enfants de Juda vinrent à Josué en Guilgal; et Caleb fils de Jéphunné Kénizien, lui dit : Tu sais la parole que l'Eternel a dite de moi, et de toi, à Moïse homme de Dieu, en Kadès-barné.
7 J'étais âgé de quarante ans quand Moïse serviteur de l'Eternel m'envoya de Kadès-barné pour reconnaître le pays, et je lui rapportai la chose comme elle était en mon cœur.
8 Et mes frères qui étaient montés avec moi, faisaient fondre le cœur du peuple; mais je persévérai à suivre l'Eternel mon Dieu.
9 Et Moïse jura en ce jour-là disant : Si la terre sur laquelle ton pied a marché n'est à toi en héritage, et à tes enfants pour jamais; parce que tu as persévéré à suivre l'Eternel mon Dieu.
10 Or maintenant voici, l'Eternel m'a fait vivre selon qu'il en avait parlé; il y a déjà quarante-cinq ans que l'Eternel prononça cette parole à Moïse, lorsque Israël marchait par le désert, et maintenant voici, je suis aujourd'hui âgé de quatre-vingt et cinq ans.
11 Et [je] suis encore aujourd'hui aussi fort que j'étais le jour que Moïse m'envoya, et j'ai maintenant la même force que j'avais alors pour le combat, et pour aller et venir.
12 Maintenant donc donne-moi cette montagne, de laquelle l'Eternel parla en ce jour-là; car tu entendis en ce jour-là que les Hanakins y habitent, et qu'il y a de grandes villes fortes; peut-être que l'Eternel sera avec moi, et je les déposséderai, comme l'Eternel en a parlé.
13 Josué donc le bénit, et donna Hébron en héritage à Caleb, fils de Jéphunné.
14 C'est pourquoi Hébron fut à Caleb, fils de Jéphunné Kénizien, en héritage jusqu'à ce jour, parce qu'il avait persévéré à suivre l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
15 Or le nom d'Hébron était auparavant Kirjath-Arbah, et [Arbah] avait été un fort grand homme entre les Hanakins. Et le pays fut tranquille sans avoir guerre.
