1 Wherefore, leaving the word of the beginning of the Christ, let us go on to what belongs to full growth, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and faith in God, 2 of the doctrine of washings, and of imposition of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment; 3 and this will we do if God permit. 4 For it is impossible to renew again to repentance those once enlightened, and who have tasted of the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God, and the works of power of the age to come, 6 and have fallen away, crucifying for themselves as they do the Son of God, and making a show of him. 7 For ground which drinks the rain which comes often upon it, and produces useful herbs for those for whose sakes also it is tilled, partakes of blessing from God; 8 but bringing forth thorns and briars, it is found worthless and nigh to a curse, whose end is to be burned.
9 But we are persuaded concerning you, beloved, better things, and connected with salvation, even if we speak thus. 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and the love which ye have shewn to his name, having ministered to the saints, and still ministering. 11 But we desire earnestly that each one of you shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end; 12 that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience have been inheritors of the promises. 13 For God, having promised to Abraham, since he had no greater to swear by, swore by himself, 14 saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee; 15 and thus, having had long patience, he got the promise. 16 For men indeed swear by a greater, and with them the oath is a term to all dispute, as making matters sure. 17 Wherein God, willing to shew more abundantly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of his purpose, intervened by an oath, 18 that by two unchangeable things, in which it was impossible that God should lie, we might have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us, 19 which we have as anchor of the soul, both secure and firm, and entering into that within the veil, 20 where Jesus is entered as forerunner for us, become for ever a high priest according to the order of Melchisedec.
1 POR tanto, dejando la palabra del comienzo en la doctrina de Cristo, vamos adelante á la perfección; no echando otra vez el fundamento del arrepentimiento 6.1 cp. 9.14.de obras muertas, y de la fe en Dios,
2 De la doctrina 6.2 Hch. 19.4,5.de bautismos, 6.2 Hch. 8.14-17.y de la imposición de manos, 6.2 Hch. 17.32,32.y de la resurrección de los muertos, 6.2 Hch. 24.25.y del juicio eterno.
3 Y esto haremos á la verdad, si Dios lo permitiere.
4 Porque 6.4 Mt. 12.31,45. cp. 10.26.es imposible que los que una vez fueron 6.4 cp. 10.32.iluminados y gustaron 6.4 Jn. 4.10.el don celestial, y 6.4 cp. 2.4.fueron hechos partícipes del Espíritu Santo.
5 Y asimismo gustaron la buena palabra de Dios, y las virtudes 6.5 cp. 2.5.del siglo venidero,
6 Y recayeron, sean otra vez renovados 6.6 cp. 12.17.para arrepentimiento, 6.6 cp. 10.29.crucificando de nuevo para sí mismos al Hijo de Dios, y exponiéndole á vituperio.
7 Porque la tierra 6.7 Sal. 65.10.que embebe el agua que muchas veces vino sobre ella, y produce hierba provechosa á aquellos de los cuales es labrada, recibe bendición de Dios:
8 Mas 6.8 Is. 5.6.la que produce espinas y abrojos, es reprobada, y cercana de maldición; cuyo fin será el ser abrasada.
9 Pero de vosotros, oh amados, esperamos mejores cosas, y más cercanas á salud, aunque hablamos así.
10 Porque 6.10 Mt. 10.42.Dios no es injusto para olvidar vuestra obra y el trabajo de amor que habéis mostrado á su nombre, habiendo 6.10 Ro. 15.25. 2 Ti. 1.18.asistido y asistiendo aún á los santos.
11 Mas deseamos que 6.11 cp. 3.6.cada uno de vosotros muestre la misma solicitud hasta el cabo, para cumplimiento de la esperanza:
12 Que no os hagáis 6.12 cp. 5.11.perezosos, mas imitadores de aquellos que por la fe y la paciencia heredan 6.12 Ga. 3.18.las promesas.
13 Porque prometiendo Dios á Abraham, no pudiendo jurar por otro mayor, 6.13 Lc. 1.73.juró por sí mismo,
14 Diciendo: 6.14 Gn. 22.16,17.De cierto te bendeciré bendiciendo, y multiplicando te multiplicaré.
15 Y así, esperando con largura de ánimo, alcanzó la promesa.
16 Porque los hombres ciertamente por el mayor que ellos juran: y el fin de todas sus controversias es 6.16 Ex. 22.11.el juramento para confirmación.
17 Por lo cual, queriendo Dios mostrar más abundantemente á los 6.17 cp. 11.9.herederos de la promesa 6.17 Sal. 110.4.la inmutabilidad de su consejo, interpuso juramento;

2 superior al levítico.
18 Para que por dos cosas inmutables, en las cuales es 6.18 Tit. 1.2.imposible que Dios mienta, tengamos un fortísimo consuelo, los que nos acogemos á trabarnos de la esperanza propuesta:
19 La cual tenemos como segura y firme ancla del alma, 6.19 Lv. 16.15.y que entra hasta dentro del 6.19 cp. 9.3.velo;
20 Donde 6.20 cp. 4.14.entró por nosotros como precursor Jesús, 6.20 cp. 3.1 y 5.6.hecho Pontífice eternalmente según el orden de Melchîsedec.
