1 Hear this word, a lamentation, which I take up against you, O house of Israel. 2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more arise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up. 3 For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left, for the house of Israel.

4 For thus saith Jehovah unto the house of Israel: Seek ye me, and ye shall live. 5 And seek not Bethel, neither go to Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought. 6 Seek Jehovah, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel. 7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth, 8 seek him that made the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: Jehovah is his name. 9 He causeth destruction to break forth suddenly upon the strong, and bringeth destruction upon the fortress. 10 They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly. 11 Forasmuch, therefore, as ye trample upon the poor, and take from him presents of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them. 12 For I know how manifold are your transgressions and your sins mighty: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the right of the needy in the gate. 13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in this time; for it is an evil time. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of hosts, shall be with you, as ye say. 15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore thus saith Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of hosts, the Lord: Wailing shall be in all broadways; and they shall say in all the streets, Alas! alas! And they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing. 17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing; for I will pass through the midst of thee, saith Jehovah. 18 Woe unto you that desire the day of Jehovah! To what end is the day of Jehovah for you? It shall be darkness and not light: 19 as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. 20 Shall not the day of Jehovah be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will not smell a sweet odour in your solemn assemblies. 22 For if ye offer up unto me burnt-offerings and your oblations, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fatted beasts. 23 Take away from me the noise of thy songs, and I will not hear the melody of thy lutes; 24 but let judgment roll down as waters, and righteousness as an ever-flowing stream. 25 Did ye bring unto me sacrifices and oblations in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel? 26 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of your Moloch, and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye had made to yourselves; 27 and I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith Jehovah, whose name is the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of hosts.

Vers. 6. și*Is. 55:3. veți trăi! 5 Nu căutați Betelul*Cap. 4:4., nu vă duceți la Ghilgal și nu treceți la Beer-Șeba*Cap. 8:14.. Căci Ghilgalul va fi dus în robie și Betelul*Osea 4:15;10:8. va fi nimicit. 6 Căutați*Vers. 4. pe Domnul și veți trăi! Temeți-vă, ca nu cumva să apuce ca un foc casa lui Iosif, și focul acesta s-o mistuie, fără să fie cineva la Betel ca să-l stingă, 7 voi, care prefaceți*Cap. 6:12. dreptul în pelin și călcați dreptatea în picioare!" 8 El a făcut Cloșca-cu-Pui*Iov 9:9;38:31. și Orionul, El preface întunericul în zori, iar ziua, în noapte neagră*Ps. 104:20.; El cheamă*Iov 38:34. Cap. 9:6. apele mării și le varsă pe fața pământului: Domnul*Cap. 4:13. este Numele Lui. 9 El aduce ca fulgerul prăpădul peste cei puternici, așa că nimicirea vine peste cetățui. 10 Ei urăsc*Is. 29:21. pe cel ce-i mustră la poarta cetății și le este scârbă*1 Împ. 22:8. de cel ce vorbește din inimă. 11 De aceea, pentru că pe sărac îl călcați în picioare și luați daruri de grâu de la el, măcar că ați zidit*Deut. 28:30,38,39.Mica 6:15.Ţef. 1:13.Hag. 1:6. case de piatră cioplită, nu le veți locui; măcar că ați sădit vii foarte bune, nu veți bea din vinul lor! 12 Căci eu știu că nelegiuirile voastre sunt multe și că păcatele voastre sunt fără număr: asupriți*Cap. 2:6. pe cel drept, luați mită și călcați în picioare*Is. 29:21. Cap. 2:7. la poarta cetății dreptul săracilor. 13 De aceea, în vremuri ca acestea, înțeleptul*Cap. 6:10. trebuie să tacă; căci sunt vremuri rele. 14 Căutați binele, și nu răul, ca să trăiți și ca, astfel, Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor să fie cu voi, cum*Mica 3:11. spuneți voi! 15 Urâți*Ps. 34:14;97:10.Rom. 12:9. răul și iubiți binele, faceți să domnească dreptatea la poarta cetății, și poate*Exod 32:30.2 Împ. 19:4.Ioel 2:14. că Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor va avea milă de rămășițele lui Iosif. 16 De aceea, așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor, Cel Atotputernic: „În toate piețele se vor boci și pe toate ulițele vor zice: ‘Vai! Vai!’ Vor chema pe plugar la jale, și la bocire pe cei ce fac jelanii*Ier. 9:17. pentru morți. 17 În toate viile va fi bocet când voi*Exod 12:12.Naum 1:12. trece prin mijlocul tău", zice Domnul. 18 Vai*Is. 5:19.Ier. 17:15.Ezec. 12:22,27.2 Pet. 3:4. de cei ce doresc ziua Domnului! Ce așteptați voi de la ziua Domnului? Ea va fi*Ier. 30:7.Ioel 2:2.Ţef. 1:15. întuneric, și nu lumină. 19 Veți fi ca un om*Ier. 48:44. care fuge dinaintea unui leu, pe care-l întâlnește un urs și care, când ajunge acasă, își reazemă mâna pe zid și-l mușcă un șarpe! 20 Nu va fi oare ziua Domnului întuneric, în loc de lumină? Nu va fi ea întunecoasă și fără strălucire? 21 „Eu urăsc*Prov. 21:27.Is. 1:11-16.Ier. 6:20.Osea 8:13., disprețuiesc sărbătorile voastre și nu pot să vă sufăr*Lev. 26:31. adunările de sărbătoare! 22 Când Îmi aduceți*Is. 66:3.Mica 6:6,7. arderi-de-tot și daruri de mâncare, n-am nicio plăcere de ele, și vițeii îngrășați pe care-i aduceți ca jertfe de mulțumire, nici nu Mă uit la ei. 23 Depărtează de Mine vuietul cântecelor tale; nu pot asculta sunetul alăutelor tale! 24 Ci dreptatea*Osea 6:6.Mica 6:8. să curgă ca o apă curgătoare și neprihănirea, ca un pârâu care nu seacă niciodată! 25 Mi-ați adus*Deut. 32:17.Ios. 24:14.Ezec. 20:8,16,24.Fapte 7:42,43.Is. 43:23. voi jertfe și daruri de mâncare în timpul celor patruzeci de ani din pustie, casa lui Israel?… 26 Veți ridica dar pe Sacut, împăratul*1 Împ. 11:33. vostru, și pe Caivan, chipurile voastre idolești, steaua dumnezeului vostru pe care vi l-ați făcut, 27 și vă voi duce în robie dincolo*2 Împ. 17:6. de Damasc", zice Domnul, al cărui Nume*Cap. 4:13. este Dumnezeul oștirilor.
