1 Who is as the wise? and who knoweth the explanation of things? A man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face is changed. 2 I say, Keep the king’s commandment, and that on account of the oath of God*GodHebrew: Elohim3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatever pleaseth him, 4 because the word of a king is power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou? 5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man’s heart knoweth time and manner.

6 For to every purpose there is time and manner. For the misery of man is great upon him; 7 for he knoweth not that which shall be; for who can tell him how it shall be? 8 There is no man who hath control over the spirit to retain the spirit; and no one hath control over the day of death; and there is no discharge in that war, neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

9 All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time when man ruleth man to his hurt. 10 And I have also seen the wicked buried and going away; and such as had acted rightly went from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city. This also is vanity. 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the children of men is fully set in them to do evil. 12 Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his days, yet I know that it shall be well with them that fear God*GodHebrew: Elohim because they fear before him; 13 but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days as a shadow, because he feareth not before God*GodHebrew: Elohim

14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there are righteous men unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; and there are wicked men to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. 15 And I commended mirth, because there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry; for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God*GodHebrew: Elohim hath given him under the sun. 16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes), 17 then I saw that all is the work of God*GodHebrew: Elohimand that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because however man may labour to seek it out, yet doth he not find it; and even, if a wise man think to know it, he shall not be able to find it out.

Cap. 6:12;9:12;10:14. el nu știe ce și cum se va întâmpla, căci n-are nici cine-i spune. 8 Omul*Ps. 49:6,7. nu este stăpân pe suflarea lui, ca s-o poată opri, și n-are nicio putere peste ziua morții; în lupta aceasta nu este izbăvire, și răutatea nu poate scăpa pe cei răi. 9 Toate acestea le-am văzut și mi-am îndreptat inima spre tot ce se face sub soare. Este o vreme când un om stăpânește peste alt om, ca să-l facă nenorocit. 10 Atunci am văzut pe cei răi îngropați și ducându-se la odihna lor, iar pe cei ce lucraseră cu neprihănire depărtându-se de locul sfânt și uitați în*Iov 14:5. cetate. Și aceasta este o deșertăciune! 11 Pentru că*Ps. 10:6;50:21.Is. 26:10. nu se aduce repede la îndeplinire hotărârea dată împotriva faptelor rele, de aceea este plină inima fiilor oamenilor de dorința să facă rău. 12 Totuși, măcar că păcătosul face*Is. 65:20.Rom. 2:5. de o sută de ori răul și stăruiește multă vreme în el, eu știu că fericirea este pentru cei*Ps. 37:11,18,19.Prov. 1:32,33.Is. 3:10,11.Mat. 25:34,41. ce se tem de Dumnezeu și au frică de El. 13 Dar cel rău nu este fericit și nu-și va lungi zilele, întocmai ca umbra, pentru că n-are frică de Dumnezeu. 14 Este o deșertăciune care se petrece pe pământ: și anume sunt oameni neprihăniți cărora le merge ca și celor răi, care fac fapte rele, și sunt răi cărora le*Ps. 73:14. Cap. 2:14;7:15;9:1,2,3. merge ca și celor neprihăniți, care fac fapte bune. Eu zic că și aceasta este o deșertăciune. 15 Am lăudat*Cap. 2:24;3:12,22;5:18;9:7. dar petrecerea, pentru că nu este altă fericire pentru om sub soare decât să mănânce și să bea și să se veselească; iată ce trebuie să-l însoțească în mijlocul muncii lui, în zilele vieții pe care i le dă Dumnezeu sub soare. 16 Când mi-am pus inima să cunosc înțelepciunea și să mă uit cu băgare de seamă la truda pe care și-o dă omul pe pământ – căci omul nu vede somn cu ochii, nici zi, nici noapte –, 17 am văzut atunci toată lucrarea lui Dumnezeu, am văzut că omul*Iov 5:9. Cap. 3:11.Rom. 11:33. nu poate să pătrundă ce se face sub soare; oricât s-ar trudi el să cerceteze, tot nu va putea afla și, chiar dacă înțeleptul ar zice că a ajuns să înțeleagă, tot*Ps. 73:16. nu poate să găsească.
