1 all the people gathered together as one man to the open place that was before the water-gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Jehovah had commanded Israel. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation, both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read in it before the open place that was before the water-gate from the morning until midday, in presence of the men and the women, and those that could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a high stage of wood, which they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkijah, and Maaseiah on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 And Ezra blessed Jehovah, the great God*GodHebrew: Elohim and all the people answered, Amen, Amen! with lifting up of their hands; and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Jehovah with their faces to the ground. 7 And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stood in their place. 8 And they read in the law of God*GodHebrew: Elohim distinctly out of the book, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, that is, the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that explained to the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to Jehovah your God*GodHebrew: Elohim mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. 10 And he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them for whom nothing is prepared; for the day is holy to our Lord; and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength. 11 And the Levites quieted all the people, saying, Be still! for the day is holy; neither be grieved. 12 And all the people went their way, to eat and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great rejoicing. For they had understood the words that were declared to them.

13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to gain wisdom as to the words of the law. 14 And they found written in the law which Jehovah had commanded through Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month, 15 and that they should publish and proclaim through all their cities, and at Jerusalem, saying, Go forth to the mount, and fetch olive-branches, and wild olive-branches, and myrtle-branches, and palm-branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. 16 And the people went forth and brought them, and made themselves booths, everyone upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim and in the open space of the water-gate, and in the open space of the gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the congregation of them that had come back from the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths. For since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun until that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. 18 Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God*GodHebrew: Elohim And they observed the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

1 Când a venit luna a șaptea, copiii lui Israel erau în cetățile lor.

Atunci, tot poporul*Ezra 3:1. s-a strâns ca un singur om pe locul deschis dinaintea*Cap. 3:26. Porții Apelor. Au zis cărturarului*Ezra 7:6. Ezra să se ducă să ia cartea Legii lui Moise, dată de Domnul lui Israel. 2 Și preotul Ezra a adus Legea înaintea adunării alcătuite din bărbați*Lev. 23:24. și femei și din toți cei ce erau în stare s-o înțeleagă. Era întâia*Deut. 31:11,12. zi a lunii a șaptea. 3 Ezra a citit în carte de dimineață până la amiază, pe locul deschis dinaintea Porții Apelor, în fața bărbaților și femeilor și în fața celor ce erau în stare s-o înțeleagă. Tot poporul a fost cu luare aminte la citirea cărții Legii. 4 Cărturarul Ezra stătea pe un scaun de lemn, ridicat cu prilejul acesta. Lângă el, la dreapta, stăteau: Matitia, Șema, Anaia, Urie, Hilchia și Maaseia, și la stânga: Pedaia, Mișael, Malchia, Hașum, Hașbadana, Zaharia și Meșulam. 5 Ezra a deschis cartea înaintea întregului popor, căci stătea mai sus decât tot poporul. Și, când a deschis-o, tot poporul s-a*Jud. 3:20. sculat. 6 Ezra a binecuvântat pe Domnul Dumnezeul cel mare, și tot poporul a răspuns*1 Cor. 14:16. ridicând mâinile*Plâng. 3:41.1 Tim. 2:8.: „Amin! Amin!" Și s-au plecat*Exod 4:31;12:27.2 Cron. 20:18. și s-au închinat înaintea Domnului, cu fața la pământ. 7 Iosua, Bani, Șerebia, Iamin, Acub, Șabetai, Hodia, Maaseia, Chelita, Azaria, Iozabad, Hanan, Pelaia și leviții lămureau poporului Legea*Lev. 10:11.Deut. 33:10.2 Cron. 17:7-9.Mal. 2:7. și fiecare stătea la locul lui. 8 Ei citeau deslușit în cartea Legii lui Dumnezeu și-i arătau înțelesul, ca să-i facă să înțeleagă ce citiseră.

9 Dregătorul Neemia*Ezra 2:63. Cap. 7:65;10:1., preotul și cărturarul Ezra și leviții*2 Cron. 35:3. Vers. 8. care învățau pe popor au zis întregului popor: „Ziua aceasta*Lev. 23:24.Num. 29:1. este închinată Domnului Dumnezeului vostru; să nu vă bociți*Deut. 16:14,15.Ecl. 3:4. și să nu plângeți!" Căci tot poporul plângea când a auzit cuvintele Legii. 10 Ei le-au zis: „Duceți-vă de mâncați cărnuri grase și beți băuturi dulci și trimiteți câte o parte*Est. 9:19,22.Apoc. 11:10. și celor ce n-au nimic pregătit, căci ziua aceasta este închinată Domnului nostru; nu vă mâhniți, căci bucuria Domnului va fi tăria voastră." 11 Leviții potoleau pe tot poporul zicând: „Tăceți, căci ziua aceasta este sfântă; nu vă mâhniți!" 12 Și tot poporul s-a dus să mănânce și să bea. Și au trimis câte o parte*Vers. 10. și altora și s-au veselit mult. Căci înțeleseseră*Vers. 7,8. cuvintele care li se tâlcuiseră. 13 A doua zi, capii de familie din tot poporul, preoții și leviții s-au strâns la cărturarul Ezra ca să audă tâlcuirea cuvintelor Legii. 14 Și au găsit scris în Lege că Domnul poruncise prin Moise că fiii lui Israel trebuie să locuiască în corturi*Lev. 23:34,42.Deut. 16:13. în timpul sărbătorii lunii a șaptea. 15 Atunci au trimis să răspândească vestea*Lev. 23:4. aceasta în toate cetățile lor și la Ierusalim*Deut. 16:16.: „Duceți-vă la munte și aduceți ramuri*Lev. 23:40. de măslin, ramuri de măslin sălbatic, ramuri de mirt, ramuri de finic și ramuri de copaci stufoși, ca să faceți corturi, cum este scris." 16 Atunci, poporul s-a dus și a adus ramuri și au făcut corturi pe acoperișul*Deut. 22:8. caselor lor, în curțile lor, în curțile Casei lui Dumnezeu, pe locul deschis dinaintea Porții Apelor*Cap. 12:37. și pe locul deschis de la poarta*2 Împ. 14:13. Cap. 12:39. lui Efraim. 17 Toată adunarea celor ce se întorseseră din robie a făcut corturi și a locuit în aceste corturi. Din vremea lui Iosua, fiul lui Nun, până în ziua aceasta, nu mai făcuseră copiii lui Israel așa ceva. Și a fost foarte mare veselie*2 Cron. 30:21.. 18 Au citit în cartea Legii lui Dumnezeu în fiecare zi*Deut. 31:10., din cea dintâi zi până la cea din urmă. Au prăznuit sărbătoarea șapte zile și a fost o adunare de sărbătoare în ziua a opta, cum este poruncit*Lev. 23:36.Num. 29:35..
