1 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: 2 and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: 3 and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace. 4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. 5 Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. 6 And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou. 7 And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good. 8 Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. 9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. 10 And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men. 11 But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. 12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one. 13 Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom. 15 Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests. Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but in any wise pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. 17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; and a maidservant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city. 18 But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither. 19 And the woman took and spread the covering over the well’s mouth, and strewed bruised corn thereon; and nothing was known. 20 And Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you. 22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan. 23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father. 24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. 25 And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother. 26 And Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead. 27 And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, 28 brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, 29 and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

1 Depois Aitofel disse a Absalão:

— Deixe-me escolher doze mil homens, e me disporei e perseguirei Davi esta noite. 2 Vou surpreendê-lo enquanto está cansado e desanimado. Farei com que entre em pânico e todo o povo que está com ele fugirá. Então matarei apenas o rei. 3 Trarei todo o povo de volta para você, pois a volta de todos depende daquele a quem você procura matar. Assim, todo o povo estará em paz.

4 Este parecer agradou a Absalão e a todos os anciãos de Israel. 5 Mas Absalão disse:

— Chamem agora Husai, o arquita, e ouçamos também o que ele tem a dizer.

6 Quando Husai chegou, Absalão lhe falou, dizendo:

— O parecer de Aitofel é este. Vamos fazer o que ele falou? Se não, diga você o que devemos fazer.

7 Então Husai disse a Absalão:

— Desta vez o conselho de Aitofel não é bom.

8 Husai continuou:

— Você conhece o seu pai e os seus homens e sabe que são valentes e estão enfurecidos como a ursa no campo, roubada dos seus filhotes. Além disso, o seu pai é homem de guerra e não passará a noite com o povo. 9 Eis que agora deve estar escondido em alguma caverna ou em outro lugar qualquer. E, se acontecer que você tenha algumas baixas no primeiro ataque, cada um que ouvir isso dirá que houve matança no povo que segue Absalão. 10 Então até o homem valente, cujo coração é como o coração de leão, com certeza irá desanimar, porque todo o Israel sabe que o seu pai é um herói e que os que estão com ele são homens valentes. 11 Eu aconselho que, a toda pressa, se reúna em torno de você todo o Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, em multidão como a areia do mar, e que você mesmo os guie na batalha. 12 Então o atacaremos onde quer que se encontre e facilmente cairemos sobre ele, como o orvalho cai sobre a terra. E não ficará ele nem nenhum dos homens que estão com ele — nem um só! 13 Se ele se retirar para alguma cidade, todo o Israel levará cordas àquela cidade e nós a arrastaremos até o ribeiro, até que lá não fique nem uma só pedrinha.

14 Então Absalão e todos os homens de Israel disseram:

— O conselho de Husai, o arquita, é melhor do que o conselho de Aitofel.

Acontece que o Senhor havia decidido frustrar o bom conselho de Aitofel, para que o mal viesse sobre Absalão.

15 Então Husai disse aos sacerdotes Zadoque e Abiatar:

— Assim e assim Aitofel aconselhou a Absalão e aos anciãos de Israel, mas assim e assim aconselhei eu. 16 Agora, pois, mandem depressa a seguinte mensagem a Davi: "Não passe esta noite nos vaus do deserto, mas atravesse logo o rio, para que não seja destruído o rei e todo o povo que com ele está."

17 Jônatas e Aimaás estavam em En-Rogel. Uma criada ia até lá e lhes passava informações, que eles depois transmitiam ao rei Davi. Eles não podiam ser vistos entrar na cidade. 18 Mas um moço os viu e contou a Absalão. Então os dois partiram às pressas e entraram na casa de um homem, em Baurim, que tinha um poço no seu pátio, ao qual desceram. 19 A mulher desse homem pegou uma coberta, e a estendeu sobre a boca do poço, e espalhou grãos de cereais sobre ela. E assim ninguém suspeitou de nada. 20 Quando os servos de Absalão chegaram àquela casa, perguntaram à mulher:

— Onde estão Aimaás e Jônatas?

A mulher respondeu:

— Já passaram o ribeiro.

Eles saíram a procurá-los, mas não conseguiram achar. Então voltaram para Jerusalém. 21 Depois que eles foram embora, os dois logo saíram do poço e foram avisar o rei Davi. Disseram:

— Levantem-se e passem depressa as águas, porque assim e assim aconselhou Aitofel contra vocês.

22 Então Davi e todo o povo que estava com ele se levantaram e passaram o Jordão. Quando amanheceu, não havia um só que não tivesse passado o Jordão.

23 Quando Aitofel viu que o seu conselho não tinha sido seguido, preparou o jumento e foi para casa, na cidade em que morava. Pôs em ordem os seus negócios e se enforcou; morreu e foi sepultado na sepultura do seu pai.

24 Davi chegou a Maanaim. Absalão, tendo passado o Jordão com todos os homens de Israel, 25 colocou Amasa no comando do exército, em lugar de Joabe. Amasa era filho de certo homem chamado Itra, o ismaelita, que era casado com Abigail, filha de Naás e irmã de Zeruia, a mãe de Joabe. 26 E assim o povo de Israel e Absalão acamparam na terra de Gileade.

27 Quando Davi chegou a Maanaim, Sobi, filho de Naás, de Rabá, dos filhos de Amom, e Maquir, filho de Amiel, de Lo-Debar, e Barzilai, o gileadita, de Rogelim, 28 trouxeram camas, bacias e vasilhas de barro, além de trigo, cevada, farinha, grãos torrados, favas e lentilhas; 29 também mel, coalhada, ovelhas e queijos de leite de vaca. Levaram isso a Davi e ao povo que estava com ele, para que comessem, porque disseram: "Este povo no deserto está faminto, cansado e sedento."
