1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. 2 And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also. 3 But the people said, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city. 4 And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands. 5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom. 6 So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim. 7 And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men. 8 For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country: and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured. 9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went on. 10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak. 11 And Joab said unto the man that told him, And behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten pieces of silver, and a girdle. 12 And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom. 13 Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life, (and there is no matter hid from the king,) then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof. 14 Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. 15 And ten young men that bare Joab’s armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. 16 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people. 17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent. 18 Now Absalom in his life time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called Absalom’s monument, unto this day. 19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies. 20 And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead. 21 Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And the Cushite bowed himself unto Joab, and ran. 22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings? 23 But come what may, said he, I will run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and overran the Cushite. 24 Now David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone. 25 And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near. 26 And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold, another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings. 27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. 28 And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king. 29 And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was. 30 And the king said, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still. 31 And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Tidings for my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee. 32 And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is. 33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

1 Davi contou os soldados que tinha consigo e pôs sobre eles capitães de mil e capitães de cem. 2 Então Davi enviou o povo: uma terça parte sob o comando de Joabe, outra sob o comando de Abisai, filho de Zeruia e irmão de Joabe, e a outra sob o comando de Itai, o geteu. E o rei disse ao povo:

— Eu também irei com vocês.

3 Mas eles disseram:

— O senhor não deveria ir, porque, se formos obrigados a fugir, não se importarão conosco, nem ainda que metade de nós morra; mas o senhor vale por dez mil de nós. Será melhor que da cidade o senhor nos preste socorro.

4 Davi respondeu:

— O que vocês acharem melhor, isso farei.

O rei se pôs ao lado do portão da cidade, e todo o povo saiu a centenas e a milhares. 5 E o rei deu ordem a Joabe, a Abisai e a Itai, dizendo:

— Por amor a mim, tratem com brandura o jovem Absalão.

Todo o povo ouviu quando o rei dava a ordem a todos os capitães a respeito de Absalão.

6 Assim, o povo saiu ao campo, a encontrar-se com Israel, e a batalha teve lugar na floresta de Efraim. 7 Ali, o povo de Israel foi batido diante dos servos de Davi; e, naquele mesmo dia, houve ali grande derrota, com a perda de vinte mil homens. 8 A batalha se estendeu por toda aquela região, e, naquele dia, a floresta consumiu mais gente do que a espada.

9 Absalão, montado em sua mula, encontrou-se com os homens de Davi. Quando a mula passou debaixo dos ramos de um grande carvalho, a cabeça de Absalão ficou presa nos ramos. Ele ficou pendurado entre o céu e a terra, enquanto a mula, que ele montava, passou adiante. 10 Um homem viu isso e foi dizer a Joabe:

— Eu vi Absalão pendurado num carvalho.

11 Então Joabe disse ao homem que lhe trouxe a notícia:

— O quê?! Você o viu? E por que não o abateu ali mesmo, derrubando-o por terra? Eu teria dado a você dez moedas de prata e um cinto.

12 Mas o homem disse a Joabe:

— Ainda que me pusessem nas mãos mil moedas de prata, não estenderia a mão contra o filho do rei, pois ouvimos muito bem que o rei deu uma ordem ao senhor, a Abisai e a Itai, dizendo: "Poupem o jovem Absalão". 13 Se eu tivesse agido traiçoeiramente contra a vida dele, nada disso poderia ser escondido do rei, e nem mesmo o senhor me defenderia.

14 Então Joabe disse:

— Não vou perder mais tempo com você.

Joabe pegou três dardos e com eles traspassou o coração de Absalão, enquanto ele ainda estava vivo, pendurado no carvalho. 15 Dez jovens, que levavam as armas de Joabe, cercaram Absalão e acabaram de matá-lo. 16 Então Joabe tocou a trombeta, e o povo voltou de perseguir Israel, porque Joabe deteve o povo. 17 Levaram Absalão e o jogaram numa grande cova na floresta. E levantaram sobre ele um enorme monte de pedras. E todo o Israel fugiu, cada um para a sua casa.

18 Ora, quando ainda vivia, Absalão tinha levantado para si uma coluna, que está no vale do Rei, porque dizia: "Não tenho nenhum filho para conservar a memória do meu nome." E deu o seu próprio nome à coluna, que até hoje se chama o Monumento de Absalão.

19 Então Aimaás, filho de Zadoque, disse a Joabe:

— Deixe que eu vá correndo dar ao rei a notícia de que o Senhor Deus já o livrou das mãos de seus inimigos.

20 Mas Joabe lhe disse:

— Hoje você não será o portador de boas notícias. Você poderá fazer isso outro dia, mas hoje não, porque está morto o filho do rei.

21 Então Joabe disse a um etíope:

— Vá e diga ao rei o que você viu.

Ele inclinou-se diante de Joabe e saiu correndo. 22 Porém Aimaás, filho de Zadoque, tornou a falar com Joabe:

— Aconteça o que acontecer, deixe-me também correr atrás do etíope.

Joabe perguntou:

— Por que você quer correr, meu filho, se não terá recompensa pela notícia?

23 Aimaás respondeu:

— Aconteça o que acontecer, vou correr.

Então Joabe lhe disse:

— Corra.

Aimaás correu pelo caminho da planície e passou o etíope.

24 Davi estava sentado entre os dois portões da entrada da cidade. A sentinela subiu ao terraço do portão sobre a muralha e, levantando os olhos, viu que um homem vinha correndo sozinho. 25 A sentinela gritou e avisou o rei. O rei disse:

— Se vem sozinho, traz boas notícias.

E vinha andando e chegando. 26 Então a sentinela viu outro homem que corria e gritou para o porteiro:

— Eis que vem outro homem correndo sozinho.

Então o rei disse:

— Também este traz boas notícias.

27 A sentinela continuou:

— Vejo o jeito de correr do primeiro. Parece ser o jeito de correr de Aimaás, filho de Zadoque.

Então o rei disse:

— Este homem é de bem e trará boas notícias.

28 Aimaás gritou e disse ao rei:

— Paz!

Inclinou-se diante do rei com o rosto em terra e disse:

— Bendito seja o Senhor, seu Deus, que nos entregou os homens que levantaram a mão contra o rei, meu senhor.

29 Então o rei perguntou:

— Vai bem o jovem Absalão?

Aimaás respondeu:

— Vi um grande alvoroço, quando Joabe enviou este seu servo, ó rei, porém não sei o que era.

30 O rei disse:

— Fique ali ao lado e espere.

Ele ficou ao lado e esperou. 31 Então o etíope chegou e disse:

— Boas notícias para o rei, meu senhor! Hoje o Senhor Deus livrou o rei das mãos de todos os que se levantaram contra ele.

32 Então o rei perguntou ao etíope:

— Vai bem o jovem Absalão?

O etíope respondeu:

— Que aquilo que aconteceu com aquele jovem aconteça com os inimigos do rei, meu senhor, e todos os que se levantam contra ele.

33 Então o rei, profundamente comovido, subiu à sala que estava por cima do portão e chorou. E, andando, dizia:

— Meu filho Absalão, meu filho, meu filho Absalão! Quem me dera que eu tivesse morrido em seu lugar, Absalão, meu filho, meu filho!
