1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah. 2 And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drave out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of another woman. 3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him. 4 And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel. 5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: 6 and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon. 7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? 8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon, and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. 9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? 10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do. 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before the LORD in Mizpah. 12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land? 13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably. 14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon: 15 and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon: 16 but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh; 17 then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh. 18 Then he walked through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they pitched on the other side of Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for Arnon was the border of Moab. 19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place. 20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21 And the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. 22 And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan. 23 So now the LORD, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them? 24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess. 25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them? 26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time? 27 I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. 28 Howbeit the king of the children Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him. 29 Then the spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into mine hand, 31 then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering. 32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hand. 33 And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abel-cheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. 34 And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back. 36 And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon. 37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions. 38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she had not known man. And it was a custom in Israel, 40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

1 Jefté, o gileadita, era homem valente, porém filho de uma prostituta. O pai dele se chamava Gileade. 2 Gileade também teve filhos da sua esposa. Esses filhos cresceram e expulsaram Jefté, dizendo:

— Você não herdará nada na casa de nosso pai, porque é filho de outra mulher.

3 Então Jefté fugiu da presença de seus irmãos e foi morar na terra de Tobe. Ali alguns homens sem valor se juntaram a ele e o seguiam.

4 Passado algum tempo, os filhos de Amom entraram em guerra contra Israel. 5 Quando os filhos de Amom atacaram, os anciãos de Gileade foram buscar Jefté na terra de Tobe. 6 E disseram a Jefté:

— Venha ser o nosso chefe, para podermos lutar contra os filhos de Amom.

7 Porém Jefté disse aos anciãos de Gileade:

— Vocês não são aqueles que me odiaram e me expulsaram da casa de meu pai? Por que vêm a mim agora, quando estão em aperto?

8 Os anciãos de Gileade responderam a Jefté:

— É por isso que agora estamos voltando a você. Venha conosco e lute contra os filhos de Amom. Seja o nosso chefe sobre todos os moradores de Gileade.

9 Então Jefté perguntou aos anciãos de Gileade:

— Se vocês me fizerem voltar para combater os filhos de Amom, e o Senhor os entregar nas minhas mãos, então eu serei o chefe de vocês?

10 Os anciãos de Gileade responderam:

— O Senhor é nossa testemunha de que faremos como você diz.

11 Então Jefté foi com os anciãos de Gileade, e o povo o pôs por cabeça e chefe sobre si. E Jefté proferiu todas as suas palavras diante do Senhor, em Mispa.

12 Jefté enviou mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom, dizendo:

— O que você tem contra mim, para vir e atacar a minha terra?

13 O rei dos filhos de Amom respondeu aos mensageiros de Jefté:

— É porque, quando Israel saiu do Egito, tomou a minha terra desde o Arnom até o Jaboque e até o Jordão. Devolva-me agora essa terra, pacificamente.

14 Porém Jefté tornou a enviar mensageiros ao rei dos filhos de Amom, 15 dizendo:

— Assim diz Jefté: "Israel não tomou nem a terra dos moabitas nem a terra dos filhos de Amom. 16 Porque, quando Israel saiu do Egito, andou pelo deserto até o mar Vermelho e chegou a Cades. 17 Então Israel enviou mensageiros ao rei dos edomitas, dizendo: ‘Peço que você me deixe passar pela sua terra.’ Porém o rei dos edomitas não lhe deu ouvidos. Israel mandou pedir a mesma coisa ao rei dos moabitas, mas ele também não quis atender. E, assim, Israel ficou em Cades. 18 Depois, andou pelo deserto, e rodeou a terra dos edomitas e a terra dos moabitas, e chegou a leste da terra destes, e acampou do outro lado do Arnom. Não entrou no território dos moabitas, porque o Arnom é a fronteira deles. 19 Então Israel enviou mensageiros a Seom, rei dos amorreus, rei de Hesbom. Israel lhe disse: ‘Por favor, deixe-nos passar pela sua terra até o nosso destino.’ 20 Porém Seom, não confiando em Israel, recusou deixá-lo passar pelo seu território; pelo contrário, reuniu todo o seu povo, acampou em Jaza, e lutou contra Israel. 21 O Senhor, Deus de Israel, entregou Seom e todo o seu povo nas mãos de Israel, que os derrotou. E Israel tomou posse das terras dos amorreus, que moravam naquele lugar. 22 Os israelitas tomaram posse de todo o território dos amorreus, desde o Arnom até o Jaboque e desde o deserto até o Jordão. 23 Assim, o Senhor, Deus de Israel, expulsou os amorreus de diante do seu povo de Israel. E você pretende ser dono desta terra? 24 Não é fato que você considera como sua propriedade aquilo que Quemos, seu deus, lhe dá? Assim nós possuiremos o território de todos os que o Senhor, nosso Deus, expulsou de diante de nós. 25 Você pensa que é melhor do que Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei dos moabitas? Será que alguma vez ele entrou em conflito com Israel ou lutou contra ele? 26 Enquanto Israel morou durante trezentos anos em Hesbom e nas suas vilas, e em Aroer e nas suas vilas, e em todas as cidades que ficam às margens do Arnom, por que vocês, amonitas, não as recuperaram durante esse tempo? 27 Portanto, não sou eu quem pecou contra você! Porém você faz mal em lutar contra mim. O Senhor, que é juiz, julgue hoje entre os filhos de Israel e os filhos de Amom."

28 Porém o rei dos filhos de Amom não deu ouvidos à mensagem que Jefté lhe havia mandado.

29 Então o Espírito do Senhor veio sobre Jefté. Ele atravessou Gileade e Manassés e, passando por Mispa de Gileade, foi até os filhos de Amom. 30 Jefté fez um voto ao Senhor, dizendo:

— Se, de fato, entregares os filhos de Amom nas minhas mãos, 31 quem primeiro sair da porta da minha casa para se encontrar comigo, quando eu voltar vitorioso sobre os filhos de Amom, esse será do Senhor, e eu o oferecerei em holocausto.

32 Assim, Jefté foi de encontro aos filhos de Amom, para lutar contra eles, e o Senhor os entregou nas mãos de Jefté. 33 Ele os derrotou desde Aroer até as proximidades de Minite — vinte cidades ao todo — e até Abel-Queramim. Foi uma grande derrota para os filhos de Amom, que, assim, foram subjugados pelos filhos de Israel.

34 Quando Jefté voltou para a sua casa, em Mispa, a filha saiu ao seu encontro, tocando o tamborim e dançando. E ela era filha única; ele não tinha outro filho nem filha. 35 Quando Jefté a viu, rasgou as suas roupas e disse:

— Ah! Minha filha! Você me prostra por completo! Você passou a ser a causa da minha ruína, porque fiz um voto ao Senhor e não posso voltar atrás.

36 E ela lhe disse:

— Meu pai, você fez um voto ao Senhor. Faça comigo segundo o voto que fez, agora que o Senhor o vingou dos seus inimigos, os filhos de Amom.

37 E ela disse mais ao seu pai:

— Que me seja concedido isto: deixa-me por dois meses, para que eu vá, e desça pelos montes, e chore a minha virgindade, eu e as minhas companheiras.

38 E o pai consentiu, dizendo:

— Vá.

Deixou-a ir por dois meses. Então ela se foi com as suas companheiras e chorou a sua virgindade pelos montes. 39 Ao fim dos dois meses, ela voltou para seu pai, que lhe fez segundo o voto que tinha feito. Assim, ela nunca teve relações com homem algum. Daqui veio o costume em Israel 40 de as filhas de Israel saírem por quatro dias, todos os anos, a chorar pela filha de Jefté, o gileadita.
