1 Als Gods medewerkers roepen wij jullie daarom op: laat het niet tevergeefs zijn dat jullie Gods genade hebben aanvaard. 2 Hij zegt immers: "Op het juiste moment heb Ik je gehoord en op de dag van de redding heb Ik je geholpen." Het juiste moment is nu en de dag van de redding is vandaag.

3 Om te voorkomen dat er iets op ons werk valt aan te merken, geven wij niemand enige aanstoot. 4 Integendeel, als dienaren van God bevelen wij onszelf aan in alle omstandigheden: in veel volharding, in lijden, nood en moeilijkheden, 5 in slaag, gevangenschap, onlusten, zwaar werk, slaapgebrek en honger, 6 en ook door oprechtheid, inzicht, geduld, vriendelijkheid, de aanwezigheid van de Heilige Geest en oprechte liefde. 7 Wij verkondigen de waarheid, dankzij de kracht die God ons geeft en met de wapens van de gerechtigheid in de rechter- en de linkerhand, 8 terwijl we zowel goedkeuring als afkeuring ontvangen en men zowel goed als kwaad over ons spreekt. Wij worden behandeld als bedriegers hoewel we oprecht zijn, 9 als onbekend hoewel we bekend zijn, als stervend hoewel we leven, als gestraft maar niet gedood. 10 Wij zijn bedroefd maar toch altijd verheugd. Wij zijn arm maar maken velen rijk. Wij hebben niets maar bezitten alles. 11 Wij hebben jullie openhartig toegesproken, Korintiërs, en ons hart wijd voor jullie opengesteld. 12 Niet wij, maar jullie zijn onvoldoende ruimhartig! 13 Ik spreek jullie toe alsof jullie mijn kinderen zijn: zet je hart voor ons open!

14 Vorm geen ongelijk partnerschap met ongelovigen, want hoe kunnen gerechtigheid en wetteloosheid bij elkaar passen? Wat hebben licht en duisternis met elkaar gemeen? 15 Welke overeenstemming is er tussen Christus en de duivel? Wat verbindt een gelovige met een ongelovige? 16 Wat heeft Gods tempel te maken met afgoden? Wij zijn de tempel van de levende God, want God heeft verklaard: "Ik zal bij hen wonen en onder hen leven en Ik zal hun God zijn en zij zullen mijn volk zijn. 17 Ga dus bij hen weg en leef van hen gescheiden, zegt de Heer, en raak niet aan wat onrein is. Dan zal Ik jullie aanvaarden, 18 en Ik zal een Vader voor jullie zijn en jullie zullen mijn zonen en dochters zijn, zegt de Almachtige Heer."
