1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. 9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. 20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. 21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; 22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; 23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

1 Broeders en zusters, ik kon jullie niet toespreken als mensen in wie Gods Geest leeft. Daarom sprak ik jullie toe als ongeestelijke mensen, onvolwassen in hun geloof in Christus. 2 Ik gaf jullie melk en geen vast voedsel, want dat konden jullie nog niet aan. En jullie kunnen het nog altijd niet aan, 3 want jullie zijn nog altijd ongeestelijk. Als er onder jullie afgunst en rivaliteit heerst, zijn jullie dan niet ongeestelijk en leven jullie dan niet op basis van menselijke maatstaven? 4 Want als iemand zegt: ‘Ik ben een aanhanger van Paulus’, en een ander: ‘En ik van Apollos’, dan zijn jullie toch menselijk bezig? 5 Wat voor iemand is Apollos? En wat voor iemand is Paulus? Wij zijn assistenten door wie jullie tot geloof zijn gekomen, en de Heer heeft ons elk een eigen taak gegeven. 6 Ik heb geplant, Apollos heeft water gegeven, maar God zorgde voor de groei. 7 En niet hij die plant, noch hij die water geeft is van belang, maar alleen Hij die voor de groei zorgt, namelijk God. 8 Hij die plant en hij die water geeft hebben hetzelfde doel, en ze zullen allebei worden beloond voor het werk dat ze hebben gedaan. 9 Wij zijn namelijk collega’s in dienst van God en jullie zijn Gods akker, Gods bouwwerk.

10 Met de genade die God mij heeft geschonken, heb ik als een verstandig bouwkundige een fundering gelegd. Een ander bouwt daarop verder. Maar iedereen moet opletten hoe hij bouwt. 11 Want niemand kan een andere fundering leggen dan de fundering die er reeds ligt: Jezus Christus. 12 Men kan op de fundering bouwen met goud, zilver, edelstenen, hout, hooi of stro. 13 Hoe iedereen heeft gebouwd, zal duidelijk worden. Dat zal gebeuren op de Dag van het Oordeel, en het vuur zal het duidelijk maken. Het vuur zal die dag duidelijk maken hoe zuiver ieders werk is. 14 Als hetgeen iemand op de fundering heeft gebouwd het vuur doorstaat, dan ontvangt die bouwer een beloning. 15 Maar als zijn werk verbrandt, lijdt hij wel verlies, maar blijft hijzelf behouden, als iemand die uit een brand is gered.

16 Weten jullie niet dat jullie Gods tempel zijn en dat Gods Geest in jullie woont? 17 Als iemand Gods tempel te gronde richt, zal God hem te gronde richten. Want Gods tempel is heilig en jullie zijn die tempel. 18 Laat niemand zichzelf iets wijsmaken: als iemand van jullie denkt dat hij wijs is naar de maatstaven van de huidige wereld, moet hij eerst "dwaas" worden voordat hij werkelijk wijs kan worden. 19 Want de wijsheid van de huidige wereld is onzin in Gods ogen. In de Schriften staat immers: "Hij vangt de wijze in zijn eigen sluwheid". 20 En elders staat: "De Heer kent de gedachten van de wijzen, Hij weet dat ze waardeloos zijn." 21 Laat niemand dus pochen over een bepaald persoon. Immers, alles is van jullie: 22 zowel Paulus als Apollos, als Kefas, de wereld, het leven, de dood, het heden en de toekomst – alles is van jullie, 23 en jullie zijn van Christus en Christus is van God.
