1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? 2 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. 3 Mine answer to them that do examine me is this, 4 Have we not power to eat and to drink? 5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? 7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? 8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? 10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. 11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? 12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. 13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? 14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. 15 But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void. 16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! 17 For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. 18 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. 19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. 20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; 21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. 22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. 24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

1 Ik ben toch vrij? Ik ben toch apostel? Ik heb Jezus, onze Heer, toch gezien? Jullie zijn toch het resultaat van het werk dat de Heer door mij doet? 2 Zelfs als ik voor anderen geen apostel ben, dan ben ik het wel voor jullie! Het feit dat jullie bij de Heer horen, is immers het bewijs dat ik een apostel ben. 3 Mijn antwoord aan wie mij om verantwoording vraagt, is als volgt. 4 Wij hebben toch het recht om te eten en te drinken? 5 En wij hebben toch het recht om een gelovige echtgenote met ons mee te nemen, net zoals de andere apostelen en de broers van de Heer, en ook Kefas? 6 Of moeten Barnabas en ik als enigen zelf in ons onderhoud voorzien? 7 Wie zou ooit op eigen kosten als soldaat dienstdoen? Wie zou een wijngaard aanplanten zonder van de opbrengst te eten? En wie zou een kudde hoeden zonder van de melk te drinken? 8 Dit is niet een louter menselijk argument, de wet zegt het toch ook? 9 Immers, in de Wet van Mozes staat: "Een dorsende os mag je niet muilkorven." Heeft God hier werkelijk de os op het oog? 10 Of zegt Hij dit omwille van ons? Natuurlijk staat dit er omwille van ons, want wie ploegt en wie dorst, mag toch verwachten om zijn aandeel te krijgen! 11 Als wij bij jullie geestelijk zaad hebben gezaaid, is het dan te veel gevraagd dat wij een materiële oogst van jullie ontvangen? 12 Als anderen dit recht ten aanzien van jullie hebben, dan wij toch des te meer? Wij hebben echter niet van dit recht gebruikgemaakt. Integendeel, we verdragen alles, om te voorkomen dat we het evangelie van Christus belemmeren. 13 Weten jullie niet dat zij die in de tempel dienstdoen, eten van hetgeen in de tempel is, en dat zij die altaardiensten verrichten, een deel krijgen van wat er geofferd wordt? 14 Op dezelfde manier heeft de Heer opgedragen dat zij die het evangelie verkondigen, van die verkondiging mogen leven. 15 Ik heb echter van geen van deze rechten gebruikgemaakt en ik schrijf dit niet om ze nu wél op te eisen. Ik zou liever sterven dan toelaten dat iemand mij die verdienste ontneemt. 16 Want het feit dat ik het evangelie verkondig is niet iets om fier op te zijn. Ik kan namelijk niet anders. Wee mij als ik het evangelie niet verkondig! 17 En als ik dit doe uit vrije wil, heb ik mijn beloning al. Ik doe het echter niet uit vrije wil, maar omdat deze taak aan mij is opgelegd. 18 Wat is dan mijn beloning? Dat ik bij de uitoefening van mijn taak als evangelist het evangelie gratis aanbied en ik dus mijn recht als evangelist niet opeis.

19 Hoewel ik niemand iets verplicht ben, heb ik mijzelf ten dienste van alle mensen gesteld om zoveel mogelijk van hen te winnen. 20 Voor de Joden ben ik als een Jood geworden, om Joden te winnen. Voor wie de Wet naleven, leef ik de Wet na – hoewel ik niet verplicht ben de Wet na te leven – om hen te winnen die de Wet naleven. 21 Voor wie zonder de Wet leeft, ben ik geworden als zonder de Wet – hoewel ik niet zonder Gods wet leef maar me onder de wet van Christus heb gesteld – om te winnen wie zonder de Wet leeft. 22 Voor de zwakken ben ik als een zwakke geworden, om de zwakken te winnen. Voor allen ben ik alles geworden om op iedere mogelijke wijze enigen te kunnen redden.

23 Ik doe dit alles omwille van het evangelie, om te kunnen delen in de opbrengst. 24 Weten jullie niet dat in een hardloopwedstrijd alle deelnemers lopen, maar dat slechts één van hen de prijs krijgt? Loop dus zo dat je kan winnen. 25 Elke atleet beheerst zich in alles. Atleten doen dat om een vergankelijke, maar wij om een onvergankelijke erekrans te ontvangen. 26 Ik loop dus niet als iemand die geen doel heeft, ik boks niet als iemand die in de lucht slaat. 27 Integendeel, ik beul mijn lichaam af en houd het in bedwang, om te voorkomen dat ik zelf word gediskwalificeerd nadat ik anderen het evangelie gebracht heb.
