1 Depois disto, morreu Naás, rei dos filhos de Amom, e seu filho reinou em seu lugar. 2 Então Davi disse:

— Serei bondoso com Hanum, filho de Naás, porque o pai dele foi bondoso comigo.

E Davi enviou mensageiros para consolar Hanum por causa da morte de seu pai. E os servos de Davi chegaram à terra dos filhos de Amom, a Hanum, para o consolarem. 3 Mas os príncipes dos filhos de Amom disseram a Hanum:

— O senhor pensa que foi para honrar o seu pai que Davi mandou esses consoladores? Não teria sido mais para que esses servos enviados por ele conheçam, destruam e espionem a terra?

4 Então Hanum pegou os servos de Davi, rapou a barba deles, cortou metade das roupas até a altura das nádegas, e os mandou embora. 5 Alguns foram e contaram a Davi o que tinha acontecido com aqueles homens. Então o rei enviou mensageiros ao encontro deles, porque estavam muito envergonhados. O rei mandou dizer-lhes:

— Fiquem em Jericó, até que a barba de vocês cresça de novo; depois, venham para cá.

6 Quando viram que haviam despertado o ódio de Davi, Hanum e os filhos de Amom pegaram trinta e quatro toneladas de prata, para contratar carros de guerra e cavaleiros da Mesopotâmia, dos sírios de Maaca e de Zobá. 7 Contrataram trinta e dois mil carros de guerra, bem como o rei de Maaca e a sua gente. Eles vieram e acamparam perto de Medeba. Também os filhos de Amom se ajuntaram das suas cidades e vieram para a guerra. 8 Davi soube disso e enviou contra eles Joabe com todo o exército dos valentes. 9 Os filhos de Amom saíram e se prepararam para a batalha à entrada do portão da cidade; porém os reis que vieram estavam à parte no campo.

10 Quando Joabe viu que a batalha estava preparada contra ele tanto pela frente como pela retaguarda, escolheu os melhores soldados de Israel e os formou em linha contra os sírios. 11 O resto do exército ele entregou a Abisai, seu irmão, e puseram-se em linha contra os filhos de Amom. 12 Joabe disse a Abisai:

— Se os sírios forem mais fortes do que eu, você virá em meu socorro; e, se os filhos de Amom forem mais fortes do que você, eu irei em seu socorro. 13 Seja forte! Vamos lutar com coragem pelo nosso povo e pelas cidades de nosso Deus. E que o Senhor Deus faça o que achar melhor.

14 Então Joabe avançou com o povo que estava com ele, e travaram batalha contra os sírios, que fugiram diante dele. 15 Quando os filhos de Amom viram que os sírios fugiam, também eles fugiram de Abisai, irmão de Joabe, e entraram na cidade. Então Joabe parou de lutar contra os filhos de Amom e voltou para Jerusalém.

16 Quando os sírios viram que tinham sido derrotados por Israel, enviaram mensageiros e chamaram os sírios que estavam do outro lado do rio Eufrates. Sofaque, comandante do exército de Hadadezer, marchava adiante deles. 17 Quando ficou sabendo disso, Davi reuniu todo o Israel, passou o Jordão, foi ao encontro deles e se pôs em ordem de batalha. Depois que Davi tinha feito isto, os sírios lutaram contra ele. 18 Porém os sírios fugiram de Israel, e Davi matou os condutores de sete mil carros de guerra e quarenta mil soldados de infantaria dos sírios; e matou Sofaque, o comandante do exército. 19 Quando os servos de Hadadezer viram que tinham sido vencidos por Israel, fizeram paz com Davi e o serviram. E os sírios nunca mais quiseram socorrer os filhos de Amom.

1 And it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.2 And David said, I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me. So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the sons of Ammon3 But the rulers of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, Do thou think that David honors thy father, in that he has sent comforters to thee? Have not his servants come to thee to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?4 So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.5 And they came and informed David about the men. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Remain at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.6 And when the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Arammaacah, and out o7 So they hired for them thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. And the sons of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army of the mighty men.9 And the sons of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city. And the kings that came were by themselves in the field.10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him in front and behind, he chose from all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.11 And the rest of the company he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they put themselves in array against the sons of Ammon.12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shall help me, but if the sons of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.13 Be of good courage, and let us act the man for our people, and for the cities of our God. And LORD do that which seems good to him.14 So Joab and the company that were with him drew near before the Syrians to the battle, and they fled before him.15 And when the sons of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the army of Hadarezer at their head.17 And it was told David. And he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with h18 And the Syrians fled before Israel. And David killed of the Syrians [the men of] seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the army.19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and served him, neither would the Syrians help the sons of Ammon any more.
