1 Então Elias, o tesbita, dos moradores de Gileade, disse a Acabe:

— Tão certo como vive o Senhor, Deus de Israel, a quem eu sirvo, não haverá orvalho nem chuva nos próximos anos, a não ser quando eu disser.

2 Então a palavra do Senhor veio a Elias, dizendo:

3 — Saia daqui, vá para o leste e esconda-se junto ao ribeiro de Querite, nas imediações do Jordão. 4 Você beberá a água do ribeiro; e eu ordenei aos corvos que sustentem você naquele lugar.

5 Elias foi e fez segundo a palavra do Senhor. Retirou-se e ficou morando junto ao ribeiro de Querite, nas imediações do Jordão. 6 Os corvos lhe traziam pão e carne pela manhã, bem como pão e carne ao anoitecer; e ele bebia a água do ribeiro. 7 Mas, passados alguns dias, o ribeiro secou, porque não chovia sobre a terra.

8 Então a palavra do Senhor veio a Elias, dizendo:

9 — Levante-se e vá a Sarepta, que pertence a Sidom, e fique por lá. Ali ordenei a uma viúva que dê comida para você.

10 Então ele se levantou e foi a Sarepta. Chegando ao portão da cidade, encontrou uma viúva que estava apanhando lenha. Ele a chamou e lhe disse:

— Por favor, traga-me um pouco de água numa vasilha para que eu possa beber.

11 Quando ela já estava indo buscar a água, Elias a chamou e lhe disse:

— Traga-me também um bocado de pão, por favor.

12 Porém ela respondeu:

— Tão certo como vive o Senhor, seu Deus, não tenho nenhum pão assado. Tenho apenas um punhado de farinha numa panela e um pouco de azeite num jarro. E, como você pode ver, apanhei dois pedaços de lenha e vou preparar esse resto de comida para mim e para o meu filho. Vamos comer e depois morreremos de fome.

13 Elias disse a ela:

— Não tenha medo. Vá e faça o que você disse. Mas primeiro faça um pãozinho com o que você tem e traga-o para mim. Depois, prepare o resto para você e para o seu filho. 14 Porque assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: "A farinha da panela não acabará, e o azeite do jarro não faltará, até o dia em que o Senhor fizer chover sobre a terra."

15 A viúva foi e fez segundo a palavra de Elias. Assim, comeram ele, ela e a sua casa durante muitos dias. 16 A farinha da panela não acabou, e o azeite do jarro não faltou, segundo a palavra do Senhor, anunciada por meio de Elias.

17 Depois disto, o filho da mulher, dona da casa, adoeceu. E a doença dele se agravou tanto, que ele morreu. 18 Então a mulher disse a Elias:

— O que foi que eu fiz a você, homem de Deus? Você veio aqui para trazer à memória a minha iniquidade e matar o meu filho?

19 Elias respondeu:

— Dê-me o seu filho.

Ele o tomou dos braços dela e o levou para cima, ao quarto, onde ele mesmo se hospedava, e o deitou em sua cama. 20 Então clamou ao Senhor e disse:

— Ó Senhor, meu Deus, por que afligiste também esta viúva, com quem me hospedo, matando o filho dela?

21 E, estendendo-se três vezes sobre o menino, clamou ao Senhor e disse:

— Ó Senhor, meu Deus, peço-te que restituas a vida a este menino!

22 O Senhor atendeu à voz de Elias, a vida foi restituída ao menino, e ele reviveu. 23 Elias tomou o menino e o levou do quarto até a casa; entregou-o à mãe dele e disse:

— Veja! O seu filho está vivo.

24 Então a mulher disse a Elias:

— Agora eu sei que você é um homem de Deus e que a palavra do Senhor na sua boca é verdade.

1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said to Ahab, As LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.2 And the word of LORD came to him, saying,3 Get thee from here, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan.4 And it shall be, that thou shall drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.5 So he went and did according to the word of LORD, for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan.6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of the brook.7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up because there was no rain in the land.8 And the word of LORD came to him, saying,9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel that I may drink.11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.12 And she said, As LORD thy God lives, I do not have a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse. And, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son that we may eat it,13 And Elijah said to her, Fear not, go and do as thou have said. But make me of it a little cake first, and bring it forth to me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.14 For thus says LORD, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not be used up, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that LORD sends rain upon the earth.15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah. And she, and he, and her house, ate [many] days.16 The jar of meal was not used up, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of LORD, which he spoke by Elijah.17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick, and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.18 And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? Thou have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son!19 And he said to her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.20 And he cried to LORD, and said, O LORD my God, have thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by slaying her son?21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.22 And LORD hearkened to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, See, thy son lives.24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that thou are a man of God, and that the word of LORD in thy mouth is truth.
