1 Salomão aliou-se com Faraó, rei do Egito, pois tomou por mulher a filha de Faraó. Ele a trouxe à Cidade de Davi, até que acabasse a construção do seu palácio, da Casa do Senhor e da muralha em volta de Jerusalém. 2 Entretanto, o povo oferecia sacrifícios nos lugares altos, porque até aqueles dias ainda não se tinha edificado templo ao nome do Senhor.

3 Salomão amava o Senhor, andando nos preceitos de Davi, seu pai; porém oferecia sacrifícios e queimava incenso nos lugares altos.

4 O rei foi a Gibeão para lá oferecer sacrifícios, porque era o lugar alto mais importante. Naquele altar, Salomão ofereceu mil holocaustos. 5 Em Gibeão, o Senhor apareceu a Salomão de noite, em sonhos. E Deus lhe disse:

— Peça o que você quer que eu lhe dê.

6 Salomão respondeu:

— Foste muito bondoso com o teu servo Davi, meu pai, porque ele andou contigo em fidelidade, em justiça e em retidão de coração, diante da tua face. Mantiveste para com ele esta grande bondade e lhe deste um filho que se assentasse no seu trono, como hoje se vê. 7 E agora, ó Senhor, meu Deus, tu fizeste reinar teu servo em lugar de Davi, meu pai. Mas eu não passo de uma criança, não sei como devo agir. 8 Teu servo está no meio do teu povo que escolheste, povo grande, tão numeroso que não se pode contar. 9 Dá, pois, ao teu servo coração compreensivo para governar o teu povo, para que, com prudência, saiba discernir entre o bem e o mal. Pois quem seria capaz de governar este teu grande povo?

10 Estas palavras agradaram ao Senhor, por haver Salomão pedido tal coisa. 11 E Deus lhe disse:

— Já que você pediu isso e não me pediu longevidade, nem riquezas, nem a morte de seus inimigos, mas pediu entendimento, para discernir o que é justo, 12 eis que farei como você pediu. Eu lhe dou um coração sábio e inteligente, de maneira que antes de você nunca houve ninguém igual a você, nem haverá depois de você. 13 Também lhe dou o que você não me pediu, tanto riquezas como glória, de modo que, entre os reis, não haverá ninguém semelhante a você durante os dias da sua vida. 14 Se você andar nos meus caminhos e guardar os meus estatutos e os meus mandamentos, como fez Davi, seu pai, eu prolongarei os seus dias.

15 Salomão acordou, e eis que era um sonho. Voltou para Jerusalém, pôs-se diante da arca da aliança do Senhor, ofereceu holocaustos, apresentou ofertas pacíficas e deu um banquete a todos os seus oficiais.

16 Então duas prostitutas foram falar com o rei Salomão. Apresentaram-se diante dele 17 e uma das mulheres disse:

— Ah! Meu senhor, eu e esta mulher moramos na mesma casa, onde dei à luz um filho. 18 No terceiro dia, depois do meu parto, também esta mulher teve um filho. Estávamos juntas. Não havia nenhuma outra pessoa conosco na casa; somente nós duas estávamos ali. 19 De noite, o filho desta mulher morreu, porque ela se deitou sobre ele. 20 Ela levantou-se no meio da noite e, enquanto esta sua serva dormia, tirou o meu filho, que estava do meu lado, e o pôs na cama dela; depois colocou o filho dela, morto, nos meus braços. 21 Quando eu me levantei de madrugada para dar de mamar ao meu filho, eis que ele estava morto. Porém, quando reparei nele pela manhã, eis que não era o filho que eu tinha dado à luz.

22 Então a outra mulher disse:

— Não! O que está vivo é o meu filho; o seu é o que está morto.

Porém a primeira mulher respondeu:

— Não! O que está morto é o seu filho; o meu é o que está vivo.

E assim elas falaram diante do rei.

23 Então o rei Salomão disse:

— Esta diz: "O que está vivo é o meu filho, e o seu filho é o que está morto"; e a outra responde: "Não, o que está morto é o seu filho, e o meu filho é o que está vivo."

24 E o rei continuou:

— Tragam-me uma espada.

E trouxeram uma espada diante do rei. 25 Então o rei disse:

— Cortem o menino que está vivo em duas partes e deem metade a uma e metade a outra.

26 Então se aguçou o amor materno da mulher cujo filho estava vivo e ela disse ao rei:

— Ah! Meu senhor, deem a ela o menino vivo! Não o matem de jeito nenhum!

Porém a outra dizia:

— Ele não será nem meu nem seu. Podem cortá-lo ao meio!

27 Então o rei disse:

— Entreguem o menino vivo à primeira mulher. Não o matem. Ela é a mãe do menino.

28 Todo o Israel ouviu a sentença que o rei havia proferido. E todos tiveram profundo respeito ao rei, porque viram que havia nele a sabedoria de Deus, para fazer justiça.

1 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round ab2 Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for the name of LORD until those days.3 And Solomon loved LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father. Only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon offered a thousand burnt-offerings upon that altar.5 In Gibeon LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.6 And Solomon said, Thou have shown to thy servant David my father great loving kindness, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee. And thou have kept for him this great7 And now, O LORD my God, thou have made thy servant king instead of David my father. And I am but a little child; I know not how to go out or come in.8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou have chosen, a great people that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.9 Give thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to judge this thy great people?10 And the speech pleased LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing.11 And God said to him, Because thou have asked this thing, and have not asked for thyself long life, neither have asked riches for thyself, nor have asked the life of thine enemies, but have asked for thyself understanding to discern12 behold, I have done according to thy word. Lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart, so that there has been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like thee.13 And I have also given thee that which thou have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like thee all thy days.14 And if thou will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David walked, then I will lengthen thy days.15 And Solomon awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of LORD, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.16 Then two women who were harlots came to the king, and stood before him.17 And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house. And I was delivered of a child with her in the house.18 And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also. And we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, except we two in the house.19 And this woman's child died in the night, because she lay upon it.20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.21 And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead. But when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son whom I bore.22 And the other woman said, No, but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And the other woman said, No, but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king.23 Then the king said, The one says, This is my son that lives, and thy son is the dead. And the other says, No, but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.24 And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.25 And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.26 Then the woman whose the living child was spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill it. But the other said, It shall be neither mine nor thine.27 Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and by no means kill it; she is the mother of it.28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged. And they feared the king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.
