1 O Senhor apareceu a Abraão nos carvalhais de Manre, quando ele estava assentado à entrada da tenda, no maior calor do dia. 2 Abraão levantou os olhos, olhou, e eis que três homens estavam em pé diante dele. Ao vê-los, Abraão correu da porta da tenda ao encontro deles, prostrou-se em terra 3 e disse:

— Senhor meu, se eu puder obter favor diante de seus olhos, peço que não passe adiante sem ficar um pouco com este seu servo. 4 Vou pedir que se traga um pouco de água, para que lavem os pés e descansem debaixo desta árvore. 5 Trarei um pouco de comida, para que refaçam as forças, visto que chegaram até este servo de vocês; depois, poderão seguir adiante.

Responderam:

— Faça como você disse.

6 Abraão correu para a tenda de Sara e lhe disse:

— Amasse depressa três medidas da melhor farinha e faça pão.

7 Abraão, por sua vez, correu ao gado, pegou um novilho tenro e bom, e o entregou a um empregado, que se apressou em prepará-lo. 8 Pegou também coalhada e leite e o novilho que tinha mandado preparar e pôs tudo diante deles; e permaneceu em pé junto a eles debaixo da árvore; e eles comeram. 9 Então lhe perguntaram:

— Onde está Sara, a sua mulher?

Ele respondeu:

— Está aí na tenda.

10 Um deles disse:

— Certamente voltarei a você, daqui a um ano; e Sara, a sua mulher, dará à luz um filho.

Sara estava escutando, à porta da tenda, atrás de Abraão. 11 Abraão e Sara já eram velhos, avançados em idade; e a Sara já lhe havia cessado o costume das mulheres. 12 Por isso Sara riu em seu íntimo, dizendo consigo mesma:

— Depois de velha, e velho também o meu senhor, terei ainda prazer?

13 Então o Senhor perguntou a Abraão:

— Por que Sara riu, dizendo: "Será verdade que darei ainda à luz, sendo velha?" 14 Por acaso, existe algo demasiadamente difícil para o Senhor? Daqui a um ano, neste mesmo tempo, voltarei a você, e Sara terá um filho.

15 Então Sara teve medo e negou, dizendo:

— Eu não ri.

Ele, porém, disse:

— Não é verdade; é certo que você riu.

16 Quando aqueles homens se levantaram dali, olharam para Sodoma; e Abraão ia com eles, para os encaminhar. 17 O Senhor disse:

— Será que eu devo esconder de Abraão o que estou para fazer, 18 visto que Abraão certamente virá a ser uma grande e poderosa nação, e nele serão benditas todas as nações da terra? 19 Porque eu o escolhi para que ordene aos seus filhos e a sua casa depois dele, a fim de que guardem o caminho do Senhor e pratiquem a justiça e o juízo, para que o Senhor faça vir sobre Abraão o que lhe prometeu.

20 Então o Senhor disse:

— O clamor contra Sodoma e Gomorra tem aumentado, e o seu pecado é gravíssimo. 21 Descerei e verei se, de fato, o que têm praticado corresponde a esse clamor que veio até mim. E, se este não for o caso, eu ficarei sabendo.

22 Assim, aqueles homens partiram dali e foram para Sodoma; mas Abraão ainda permaneceu na presença do Senhor. 23 E, aproximando-se, Abraão perguntou:

— Será que vais destruir o justo com o ímpio? 24 Se houver, por acaso, cinquenta justos na cidade, ainda assim destruirás e não pouparás o lugar por amor dos cinquenta justos que nela se encontram? 25 Longe de ti fazeres tal coisa: matar o justo com o ímpio, como se o justo fosse igual ao ímpio. Longe de ti! Será que o Juiz de toda a terra não faria justiça?

26 Então o Senhor disse:

— Se eu encontrar cinquenta justos dentro da cidade de Sodoma, pouparei a cidade toda por amor a eles.

27 Abraão continuou:

— Eis que me atrevi a falar ao Senhor, eu que sou pó e cinza. 28 Caso faltarem cinco para cinquenta justos, destruirás por isso toda a cidade?

Deus respondeu:

— Não a destruirei se eu encontrar ali quarenta e cinco.

29 Então Abraão disse:

— E se, por acaso, houver ali apenas quarenta?

Deus respondeu:

— Não o farei por amor aos quarenta.

30 Abraão insistiu:

— Não se ire o Senhor, se eu continuar a falar. E se houver ali apenas trinta?

O Senhor respondeu:

— Não o farei se eu encontrar ali trinta.

31 Abraão continuou:

— Eis que me atrevi a falar ao Senhor. E se, por acaso, houver ali apenas vinte?

O Senhor respondeu:

— Não a destruirei por amor aos vinte.

32 Finalmente Abraão disse:

— Não se ire o Senhor, se lhe falo somente mais esta vez. E se, por acaso, houver ali apenas dez?

O Senhor respondeu:

— Não a destruirei por amor aos dez.

33 Quando acabou de falar com Abraão, o Senhor se retirou, e Abraão voltou para onde estava antes.

1 And LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him. And when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,3 and said, My lord, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant.4 Let now a little water be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and strengthen ye your heart. After that ye shall pass on, inasmuch as ye came to your servant. And they said, Do so as thou have said.6 And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it to the servant. And he hastened to dress it.8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.10 And he said, I will certainly return to thee when the season comes round, and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, [and] well stricken in age. It had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I have become old shall I have pleasure, my lord also being old?13 And LORD said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I who am old certainly bear a child?14 Is anything too hard for LORD? At the set time I will return to thee, when the season comes round, and Sarah shall have a son.15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I did not laugh, for she was afraid. And he said, No, but thou did laugh.16 And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.17 And LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that which I do,18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of LORD, to do righteousness and justice, to the end that LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he has spoke20 And LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which comes to me. And if not, I will know.22 And the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham yet stood before LORD.23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Will thou consume righteous men with wicked men?24 Perhaps there are fifty righteous men within the city. Will thou consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous men that are in it?25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay a righteous man with a wicked man, that so the righteous man should be as the wicked man. Far be it from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?26 And LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous men within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sake.27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak to the Lord, who am but dust and ashes.28 Perhaps there shall lack five of the fifty righteous men. Will thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, I will not destroy it, if I find there forty-five.29 And he spoke to him yet again, and said, Perhaps there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for the forty's sake.30 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Perhaps there shall be thirty found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak to the Lord. Perhaps there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake.32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Perhaps ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.33 And LORD went his way as soon as he had left off conversing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
