1 Ao anoitecer, os dois anjos chegaram a Sodoma. Ló estava sentado junto ao portão da cidade. Quando viu os anjos, levantou-se e, indo ao encontro deles, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra 2 e lhes disse:

— Por favor, meus senhores, venham para a casa deste servo de vocês. Poderão passar a noite, lavar os pés, levantar-se de madrugada e seguir o seu caminho.

Mas eles responderam:

— Não; passaremos a noite na praça.

3 Ló insistiu tanto, que eles foram e entraram na casa dele. Deu-lhes um banquete, fez assar uns pães sem fermento, e eles comeram. 4 Mas, antes que eles se deitassem, os homens daquela cidade cercaram a casa. Eram os homens de Sodoma, tanto os moços como os velhos, sim, todo o povo de todos os lados. 5 E chamaram Ló e lhe disseram:

— Onde estão os homens que, à noitinha, entraram na sua casa? Traga-os aqui fora para que abusemos deles.

6 Então Ló foi até a porta, fechou-a atrás de si 7 e lhes disse:

— Meus irmãos, peço-lhes que não cometam essa maldade. 8 Olhem aqui! Tenho duas filhas, virgens, e vou trazê-las para vocês. Façam com elas o que quiserem, porém não façam nada a estes homens, porque se acham sob a proteção do meu teto.

9 Eles, porém, disseram:

— Saia daí!

E acrescentaram:

— Ele é estrangeiro, veio morar entre nós e pretende ser juiz em tudo? Vamos fazer com você pior do que com eles.

E atiraram-se contra o homem, contra Ló, e se aproximaram para arrombar a porta. 10 Porém os homens, estendendo a mão, puxaram Ló para dentro e fecharam a porta. 11 E feriram de cegueira os que estavam do lado de fora, desde o menor até o maior, de modo que se cansaram à procura da porta.

12 Então os homens disseram a Ló:

— Você tem aqui mais alguém dos seus? Genro, filhos, filhas, todos quantos você tem na cidade, faça-os sair daqui, 13 pois vamos destruir este lugar, porque o seu clamor tem aumentado, chegando até a presença do Senhor, e o Senhor nos enviou a destruí-lo.

14 Então Ló saiu e foi falar com os seus genros, os que estavam para casar com as suas filhas. Ele disse:

— Levantem-se e saiam deste lugar, porque o Senhor vai destruir a cidade.

Mas eles pensaram que Ló estava brincando.

15 Ao amanhecer, os anjos apressaram Ló, dizendo:

— Levante-se, pegue a sua mulher e as suas duas filhas, que aqui se encontram, e saia daqui, para que você não morra quando a cidade for castigada.

16 Como, porém, ele se demorasse, aqueles homens o pegaram pela mão, a ele, a sua mulher e as duas filhas, sendo-lhe o Senhor misericordioso, e o tiraram, e o puseram fora da cidade. 17 Havendo-os levado para fora, um deles disse:

— Corra, para sair daqui com vida! Não olhe para trás, nem pare em toda a campina. Fuja para o monte, para que você não morra.

18 Mas Ló disse a eles:

— Assim não, meu Senhor! 19 Eis que o teu servo encontrou favor diante dos teus olhos, e engrandeceste a tua misericórdia para comigo, salvando-me a vida. Mas não posso fugir para o monte, pois receio que a destruição vá me alcançar, e eu morra. 20 Eis aqui perto uma cidadezinha para a qual eu posso fugir. Ela é bem pequena. Permita que eu fuja para lá — ela é bem pequena, não é verdade? —, e nela poderei salvar a minha vida.

21 O anjo respondeu:

— Quanto a isso, estou de acordo, para não destruir a cidade de que você acaba de falar. 22 Vá depressa e refugie-se nela; pois nada posso fazer, enquanto você não tiver chegado lá. Por isso, a cidade recebeu o nome de Zoar.

23 O sol estava nascendo sobre a terra, quando Ló entrou em Zoar. 24 Então o Senhor fez chover enxofre e fogo sobre Sodoma e Gomorra. Isso veio da parte do Senhor, desde os céus. 25 Ele destruiu aquelas cidades, e toda a campina, e todos os moradores das cidades, e o que nascia na terra. 26 E a mulher de Ló olhou para trás e virou uma estátua de sal.

27 Na manhã seguinte, Abraão se levantou de madrugada e foi para o lugar onde tinha estado na presença do Senhor. 28 Abraão olhou para Sodoma e Gomorra e para toda a terra da campina e viu que da terra subia fumaça, como se fosse a fumaça de uma fornalha.

29 Assim, quando destruiu as cidades da campina, Deus se lembrou de Abraão e tirou Ló do meio da destruição, quando subverteu as cidades em que Ló tinha morado.

30 Ló partiu de Zoar e habitou no monte, ele e as duas filhas, porque receavam permanecer em Zoar. Ló habitou numa caverna, e com ele as duas filhas. 31 Então a primogênita disse à mais moça:

— Nosso pai está velho, e não há homem na terra que venha unir-se conosco, segundo o costume de toda terra. 32 Venha, vamos embebedá-lo com vinho, deitemo-nos com ele e conservemos a descendência de nosso pai.

33 Naquela noite, deram de beber vinho a seu pai. E, entrando a primogênita, se deitou com ele, sem que ele o notasse, nem quando ela se deitou, nem quando se levantou. 34 No dia seguinte, a primogênita disse à mais nova:

— Ontem à noite, deitei-me com o meu pai. Vamos embebedá-lo também esta noite; entre e deite-se com ele, para que preservemos a descendência de nosso pai.

35 De novo, naquela noite, deram de beber vinho a seu pai. E, entrando a mais nova, se deitou com ele, sem que ele o notasse, nem quando ela se deitou, nem quando se levantou.

36 E assim as duas filhas de Ló ficaram grávidas do próprio pai. 37 A primogênita deu à luz um filho e lhe deu o nome de Moabe. Este é o pai dos moabitas, até o dia de hoje. 38 A mais nova também deu à luz um filho e lhe deu o nome de Ben-Ami. Este é o pai dos amonitas, até o dia de hoje.

1 And the two [heavenly] agents came to Sodom at evening, and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. And Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them. And he bowed himself with his face to the earth,2 and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, No, but we will abide in the street all n3 And he urged them greatly. And they turned in to him, and entered into his house. And he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, encompassed the house around, both young and old, all the people from every quarter.5 And they called to Lot, and said to him, Where are the men who came in to thee this night? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.6 And Lot went out to them to the door, and shut the door after him.7 And he said, I pray you, my brothers, do not so wickedly.8 Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known a man. Let me, I pray you, bring them out to you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes. Only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the shadow of my roof.9 And they said, Stand back. And they said, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will be a judge. Now we will deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed greatly upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the doo10 But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.11 And they smote the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.12 And the men said to Lot, Have thou here any besides? Son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whomever thou have in the city, bring them out of the place.13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them has been great before LORD. And LORD has sent us to destroy it.14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place, for LORD will destroy the city. But he seemed to his sons-in-law as a man jesting.15 And when the morning arose, then the [heavenly] agents hurried Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters who are here, lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.16 But he lingered. And the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters, LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him forth, and set him outside the city.17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life, do not look behind thee, neither stay thou in all the Plain. Escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.18 And Lot said to them, Oh, not so, my lord.19 Behold now, thy servant has found favor in thy sight, and thou have magnified thy loving kindness, which thou have shown to me in saving my life, and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest evil overtake me, and I die.20 Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Oh let me escape there (is it not a little one?), and my soul shall live.21 And he said to him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which thou have spoken.22 Hasten thee, escape there, for I cannot do anything till thou have come there. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot came to Zoar.24 Then LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from LORD out of heaven.25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.27 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before LORD.28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the Plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace.29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Zoar. And he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.31 And the firstborn said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man on the earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth.32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lay with him, that we may preserve seed by our father.33 And they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in, and lay with her father. And he did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose.34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said to the younger, Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine this night also, and go thou in, and lay with him, that we may preserve seed by our fath35 And they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him. And he did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose.36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.37 And the firstborn bore a son, and called his name Moab. The same is the father of the Moabites to this day.38 And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi. The same is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day.
