1 Então José se lançou sobre o rosto de seu pai, chorou sobre ele e o beijou. 2 José ordenou a seus servos, aos que eram médicos, que embalsamassem o corpo de seu pai. E os médicos embalsamaram Israel, 3 gastando nisso quarenta dias, pois assim se cumprem os dias do embalsamamento; e os egípcios ficaram de luto setenta dias.

4 Passados os dias de luto, José falou à casa de Faraó:

— Se agora encontrei favor diante de vocês, peço que falem aos ouvidos de Faraó, dizendo: 5 "Meu pai me fez jurar, declarando: ‘Eis que estou morrendo; sepulte-me no túmulo que abri para mim na terra de Canaã.’ Agora, quero ir e sepultar meu pai; depois voltarei."

6 Faraó respondeu:

— Vá e sepulte o seu pai como ele fez você jurar.

7 José partiu para sepultar o seu pai. Com ele foram todos os oficiais de Faraó, os principais da sua casa e todos os principais da terra do Egito, 8 bem como toda a casa de José, e seus irmãos, e a casa de seu pai. Deixaram na terra de Gósen somente as crianças, os rebanhos e o gado. 9 E foram também com ele tanto carruagens como cavaleiros; e o cortejo foi muito grande.

10 Quando eles chegaram à eira de Atade, que fica do outro lado do Jordão, fizeram ali grande e intensa lamentação; e José pranteou seu pai durante sete dias. 11 Quando os moradores da terra, os cananeus, viram o luto na eira de Atade, disseram:

— Como é grande este pranto dos egípcios!

E por isso aquele lugar foi chamado de Abel-Mizraim; fica do outro lado do Jordão.

12 Os filhos de Jacó fizeram como ele lhes havia ordenado: 13 levaram-no para a terra de Canaã e o sepultaram na caverna do campo de Macpela, que, juntamente com o campo, Abraão havia comprado de Efrom, o heteu, para ser lugar de sepultura. Esse lugar fica em frente a Manre. 14 Depois disso, José voltou para o Egito, ele, os seus irmãos e todos os que o haviam acompanhado para sepultar o seu pai.

15 Vendo os irmãos de José que seu pai já era morto, disseram:

— É possível que José tenha ódio de nós; certamente nos retribuirá todo o mal que lhe fizemos.

16 Por isso, mandaram dizer a José:

— O seu pai, antes de morrer, ordenou o seguinte: 17 "É isto que vocês dirão a José: ‘Perdoe, por favor, a transgressão dos seus irmãos e o pecado que cometeram, porque eles lhe fizeram mal.’" Agora pedimos que perdoe a transgressão dos servos do Deus de seu pai.

Ao ouvir estas palavras, José chorou. 18 Depois, vieram também os seus irmãos, prostraram-se diante dele e disseram:

— Eis-nos aqui; somos seus servos.

19 Mas José respondeu:

— Não tenham medo; será que eu estou no lugar de Deus? 20 Vocês, na verdade, planejaram o mal contra mim; porém Deus o tornou em bem, para fazer, como estão vendo agora, que se conserve a vida de muita gente. 21 Portanto, não tenham medo; eu sustentarei vocês e os seus filhos.

E assim José os consolou e lhes falou ao coração.

22 José ficou morando no Egito, ele e a casa de seu pai. Viveu cento e dez anos. 23 José viu os filhos de Efraim até a terceira geração; também os filhos de Maquir, filho de Manassés, os quais José tomou sobre os seus joelhos. 24 José disse a seus irmãos:

— Eu vou morrer em breve. Mas Deus certamente visitará vocês e fará com que saiam desta terra para ir à terra que jurou dar a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó.

25 José pediu aos filhos de Israel que fizessem um juramento, dizendo:

— Deus certamente visitará vocês. Quando isso acontecer, levem os meus ossos daqui.

26 José morreu com a idade de cento e dez anos. Eles embalsamaram o seu corpo e o puseram num caixão, no Egito.

1 And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. And the physicians embalmed Israel.3 And forty days were fulfilled for him, for so are fulfilled the days of embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.4 And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die. In my grave which I have dug for me in the land of Canaan, there shall thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.7 And Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,8 and all the house of Joseph, and his brothers, and his father's house. Only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. And it was a very great company.10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan. And there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation. And he made a mourning for his father seven days.11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians. Therefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.12 And his sons did to him according as he commanded them.13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burying place, of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brothers, and all who went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.15 And when Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully requite us all the evil which we did to him.16 And they sent a message to Joseph, saying, Thy father commanded before he died, saying,17 So shall ye say to Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the transgression of thy brothers, and their sin, because they did to thee evil. And now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father. And Jo18 And his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, Behold, we are thy servants.19 And Joseph said to them, Fear not, for am I in the place of God?20 And as for you, ye meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.21 Now therefore fear ye not. I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house. And Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.23 And Joseph saw Ephraim's sons of the third generation. Also the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph's knees.24 And Joseph said to his brothers, I die, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.25 And Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from here.26 So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
