1 Isaque chamou Jacó e, dando-lhe a sua bênção, lhe ordenou, dizendo:

— Não escolha uma esposa dentre as filhas de Canaã. 2 Levante-se e vá a Padã-Arã, à casa de Betuel, pai de sua mãe, e tome lá por esposa uma das filhas de Labão, irmão de sua mãe. 3 Que o Deus Todo-Poderoso o abençoe, faça com que seja fecundo e o multiplique para que você venha a ser uma multidão de povos. 4 Que ele lhe dê a bênção de Abraão, a você e à sua descendência, para que você possua a terra de suas peregrinações, concedida por Deus a Abraão.

5 Assim, Isaque despediu Jacó, que se foi a Padã-Arã, à casa de Labão, filho de Betuel, o arameu, irmão de Rebeca, mãe de Jacó e de Esaú.

6 Esaú viu que Isaque havia abençoado Jacó e o havia mandado a Padã-Arã, para tomar de lá esposa para si, e que, ao abençoá-lo, lhe havia ordenado que não escolhesse uma esposa dentre as filhas de Canaã. 7 Soube também que Jacó, obedecendo ao seu pai e à sua mãe, havia ido a Padã-Arã. 8 Sabendo também que Isaque, seu pai, não via com bons olhos as filhas de Canaã, 9 Esaú foi à casa de Ismael e, além das mulheres que já tinha, tomou por mulher Maalate, filha de Ismael, filho de Abraão, e irmã de Nebaiote.

10 Jacó partiu de Berseba e seguiu para Harã. 11 Quando chegou a certo lugar, ali passou a noite, porque o sol já se havia posto. Pegou uma das pedras do lugar, fez dela o seu travesseiro e se deitou ali mesmo para dormir. 12 E sonhou: Eis que estava posta na terra uma escada cujo topo atingia o céu, e os anjos de Deus subiam e desciam por ela. 13 E eis que o Senhor estava perto dele e lhe disse:

— Eu sou o Senhor, Deus de Abraão, seu pai, e Deus de Isaque. A terra em que agora você está deitado, eu a darei a você e à sua descendência. 14 A sua descendência será como o pó da terra; você se estenderá para o oeste e para o leste, para o norte e para o sul. Em você e na sua descendência serão benditas todas as famílias da terra. 15 Eis que eu estou com você e o guardarei por onde quer que você for. Farei com que você volte para esta terra, porque não o abandonarei até que eu cumpra aquilo que lhe prometi.

16 Quando Jacó despertou do sono, disse:

— Na verdade, o Senhor está neste lugar, e eu não o sabia.

17 E, temendo, disse:

— Quão temível é este lugar! É a casa de Deus, a porta dos céus.

18 Na manhã seguinte, Jacó levantou-se de madrugada, pegou a pedra que havia usado como travesseiro e a pôs em pé como coluna. E sobre o topo dela derramou azeite. 19 E ao lugar, cidade que antes se chamava Luz, deu o nome de Betel. 20 Jacó fez também um voto, dizendo:

— Se Deus for comigo, e me guardar nesta jornada que empreendo, e me der pão para comer e roupa para vestir, 21 de maneira que eu volte em paz para a casa de meu pai, então o Senhor será o meu Deus; 22 e a pedra, que pus como coluna, será a casa de Deus; e, de tudo o que me concederes, certamente te darei o dízimo.

1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and ordered him, and said to him, Thou shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.2 Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father, and take thee a wife from there of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou may be a company of peoples,4 and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee, that thou may inherit the land of thy sojourning, which God gave to Abraham.5 And Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram, to take for him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him an order, saying, Thou shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan,7 and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan-aram.8 And Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please Isaac his father.9 And Esau went to Ishmael, and took, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.11 And he touched upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set. And he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.12 And he dreamed, and, behold, a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And, behold, the agents of God ascending and descending on it.13 And, behold, LORD stood above it, and said, I am LORD, the God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac. The land on which thou lay, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed.14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee wherever thou go, and will bring thee again into this land. For I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.16 And Jacob awoke out of his sleep, and he said, Surely LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.17 And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.19 And he called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at first.20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,21 so that I come again to my father's house in peace, and LORD will be my God,22 then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that thou shall give me I will surely give the tenth to thee.
