1 Palavra que foi dita a Jeremias da parte do Senhor, quando Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, e todo o seu exército, e todos os reinos da terra que estavam debaixo do seu poder, e todos os povos lutavam contra Jerusalém e contra todas as cidades ao redor:

2 — Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Vá e diga a Zedequias, rei de Judá, que assim diz o Senhor: "Eis que entregarei esta cidade nas mãos do rei da Babilônia, o qual a queimará. 3 Você não escapará das mãos dele; pelo contrário, será preso e entregue nas suas mãos. Você verá o rei da Babilônia face a face, e ele falará com você pessoalmente. E você será levado para a Babilônia."

4 — No entanto, ouça a palavra do Senhor, ó Zedequias, rei de Judá: Assim diz o Senhor a respeito de você: "Você não morrerá à espada, 5 mas morrerá em paz. Queimarão perfumes em sua honra, como queimaram em honra aos seus pais, os reis que o precederam. E eles o prantearão, dizendo: ‘Ai, senhor!’ Pois sou eu quem está dizendo isto", diz o Senhor.

6 O profeta Jeremias falou todas estas palavras a Zedequias, rei de Judá, em Jerusalém, 7 quando o exército do rei da Babilônia lutava contra Jerusalém e contra as cidades de Judá que ainda restavam, a saber, Laquis e Azeca; porque de todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá só estas haviam ficado.

8 Palavra que foi dita a Jeremias da parte do Senhor, depois que o rei Zedequias fez aliança com todo o povo de Jerusalém, para lhes apregoar liberdade: 9 que cada um libertasse os seus escravos hebreus e que cada um libertasse as suas escravas hebreias, de maneira que ninguém tivesse como escravo um judeu, seu compatriota. 10 Todas as autoridades e todo o povo que haviam entrado na aliança obedeceram, libertando cada um os seus escravos e cada um as suas escravas, de maneira que já não os retiveram como escravos; obedeceram e os despediram. 11 Mas depois mudaram de ideia, e fizeram voltar os escravos e as escravas que haviam libertado, e os sujeitaram outra vez à escravidão.

12 A palavra do Senhor veio a Jeremias, da parte do Senhor, dizendo:

13 — Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Eu fiz uma aliança com os pais de vocês, no dia em que os tirei da terra do Egito, da casa da servidão, dizendo: 14 "Ao fim de sete anos, cada um deve libertar o seu compatriota hebreu que tiver sido vendido a vocês como escravo; depois que ele o tiver servido durante seis anos, você lhe dará a liberdade." Mas os pais de vocês não me deram ouvidos, nem atenderam. 15 Há pouco vocês tinham voltado a fazer o que é reto aos meus olhos, apregoando liberdade cada um ao seu próximo. Vocês tinham feito uma aliança diante de mim, no templo que se chama pelo meu nome. 16 Mas agora vocês mudaram de ideia e profanaram o meu nome, pois fizeram voltar os escravos e as escravas que haviam libertado conforme a vontade deles e os sujeitaram outra vez à escravidão.

17 — Portanto, assim diz o Senhor: Vocês não me deram ouvidos e não apregoaram liberdade, cada um a seu compatriota e cada um ao seu próximo. Por isso, eis que eu apregoo liberdade para vocês, diz o Senhor, liberdade para a espada, para a peste e para a fome. Farei de vocês um objeto de espanto para todos os reinos da terra. 18 Farei com os homens que transgrediram a minha aliança e não cumpriram as palavras da aliança que fizeram diante de mim o mesmo que eles fizeram com o bezerro que cortaram ao meio, para passarem entre as duas partes. 19 As autoridades de Judá e de Jerusalém, os oficiais, os sacerdotes e todo o povo da terra, esses que passaram entre as duas partes do bezerro, 20 eu os entregarei nas mãos de seus inimigos e nas mãos dos que procuram tirar-lhes a vida, e os cadáveres deles servirão de alimento às aves dos céus e aos animais selvagens. 21 Quanto a Zedequias, rei de Judá, e aos seus oficiais, eu os entregarei nas mãos de seus inimigos e nas mãos dos que procuram tirar-lhes a vida, nas mãos do exército do rei da Babilônia, que já se retirou de vocês. 22 Eis que eu darei ordem, diz o Senhor, e os farei voltar a esta cidade. Eles lutarão contra ela, tomarão a cidade e a queimarão. Farei com que as cidades de Judá fiquem em ruínas e sem moradores.

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from LORD, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth that were under his dominion, and all the peoples, were fighting against Jerusalem, and against all t2 Thus says LORD, the God of Israel: Go, and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus says LORD: Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.3 And thou shall not escape out of his hand, but shall surely be taken, and delivered into his hand. And thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shall go to Babyl4 Yet hear the word of LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah. Thus says LORD concerning thee, Thou shall not die by the sword;5 thou shall die in peace. And with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings who were before thee, so shall they make a burning for thee. And they shall lament thee, [saying], Ah lord! For I have spoken the word, says LORD.6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah, king of Judah in Jerusalem,7 when the king of Babylon's army was fighting against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish and against Azekah, for these [alone] remained of the cities of Judah, fortified cities.8 The word that came to Jeremiah from LORD, after the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them,9 that every man should let his man-servant, and every man his maid-servant, who is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free, that none should make bondmen of them, [namely], of a Jew his brother.10 And all the rulers and all the people obeyed, who had entered into the covenant, that everyone should let his man-servant, and everyone his maid-servant, go free, that none should make bondmen of them any more. They obeyed, and let11 But afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.12 Therefore the word of LORD came to Jeremiah from LORD, saying,13 Thus says LORD, the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying,14 At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to thee, and has served thee six years. Thou shall let him go free from thee. But your fathers hearkened not to me, nor inclined the15 And ye were now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor. And ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name.16 But ye turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had let go free at their pleasure, to return. And ye brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaid17 Therefore thus says LORD: Ye have not hearkened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor. Behold, I proclaim to you a liberty, says LORD--to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine18 And I will give the men who have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it,19 the rulers of Judah, and the rulers of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf,20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life. And their dead bodies shall be for food to the birds of the heavens, and to the beasts of the earth.21 And I will give Zedekiah king of Judah, and his rulers, into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army that has gone away from you.22 Behold, I will command, says LORD, and cause them to return to this city. And they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.
