1 "Ai dos filhos rebeldes",

diz o Senhor,

"que executam planos

que não procedem de mim

e fazem aliança sem consultar

o meu Espírito,

para acrescentarem

pecado sobre pecado!

2 Eles descem ao Egito

sem me consultar,

buscando refúgio em Faraó

e abrigo à sombra do Egito!

3 Mas o refúgio de Faraó

se transformará

em vergonha para vocês,

e o abrigo na sombra do Egito

resultará em humilhação.

4 Porque os príncipes de Judá

já estão em Zoã,

e os seus embaixadores

já chegaram a Hanes.

5 Mas todos ficarão envergonhados

por causa de um povo

que não os ajudará em nada,

que não servirá nem de ajuda

nem de proveito,

porém de vergonha e de vexame."

6 Sentença contra a Besta do Sul.

"Atravessando a terra da aflição

e da angústia,

de onde vêm a leoa, o leão,

a víbora e a serpente voadora,

os embaixadores levam

as suas riquezas

em lombo de jumento,

e transportam os seus tesouros

sobre as corcovas de camelos.

Levam as suas riquezas

e os seus tesouros

a um povo que não lhes será

de proveito algum.

7 Pois, quanto ao Egito,

o seu auxílio é vão e inútil.

Por isso, eu o chamo de

‘Besta que nada faz’."

8 "Agora vá e escreva isso

numa tabuinha diante deles,

escreva-o num livro,

para que fique registrado

para os dias vindouros,

para sempre, perpetuamente.

9 Porque este é um povo rebelde;

são filhos mentirosos,

filhos que não querem ouvir

a lei do Senhor.

10 Eles dizem aos videntes:

‘Não tenham mais visões!’

E aos profetas: ‘Não profetizem

para nós o que é reto;

digam-nos coisas agradáveis,

profetizem ilusões.

11 Desviem-se do caminho,

afastem-se da vereda;

não nos falem mais

a respeito do Santo de Israel.’"

12 Por isso o Santo de Israel diz:

"Vocês rejeitam esta palavra,

confiam na opressão

e na perversidade

e se apoiam sobre isso.

13 Portanto, esta maldade

será para vocês

como brecha num muro alto,

que, formando uma barriga,

está prestes a cair,

e cuja queda vem de repente,

num momento.

14 O Senhor quebrará esse muro

como se quebra o vaso do oleiro,

despedaçando-o por completo;

não se achará entre os seus cacos

um que sirva para tirar brasas

da lareira

ou apanhar água da cisterna."

15 Porque assim diz o Senhor Deus,

o Santo de Israel:

"Na conversão e no descanso

está a salvação de vocês;

na tranquilidade e na confiança

reside a força de vocês.

Mas vocês não quiseram.

16 Pelo contrário, disseram:

‘Nada disso!

Nós vamos fugir a cavalo!’

Portanto, vocês fugirão.

E vocês disseram:

‘Vamos cavalgar

sobre cavalos ligeiros!’

Portanto, ligeiros serão aqueles

que perseguem vocês.

17 Mil homens fugirão

pela ameaça de apenas um;

pela ameaça de cinco,

todos vocês fugirão,

até que sejam deixados

como um mastro

no alto do monte

e como um estandarte

no topo da colina."

18 Por isso, o Senhor espera,

para ter misericórdia de vocês,

e se levanta, para se compadecer

de vocês,

porque o Senhor é Deus de justiça.

Bem-aventurados todos os que nele esperam.

19 Porque o povo habitará em Sião, em Jerusalém. Vocês não vão chorar mais. Ele certamente se compadecerá, ao ouvir o clamor de vocês; e, ouvindo-o, lhes responderá. 20 Embora o Senhor lhes dê pão de angústia e água de aflição, os mestres de vocês não se esconderão mais; vocês os verão com os seus próprios olhos. 21 Quando vocês se desviarem para a direita ou para a esquerda, ouvirão atrás de vocês uma palavra, dizendo: "Este é o caminho; andem nele." 22 Vocês tratarão como impuras as imagens esculpidas cobertas de prata e as imagens de fundição revestidas de ouro; vocês as jogarão fora como coisa impura e dirão a cada uma delas: "Fora daqui!"

23 O Senhor lhes dará chuva para as sementes que vocês semearem na terra, e também lhes dará o alimento que a terra produzir, o qual será farto e nutritivo. Naquele dia, o gado de vocês pastará em lugares espaçosos. 24 Os bois e os jumentos que lavram a terra comerão forragem com sal, espalhada com pá e forcado. 25 No dia do grande massacre, quando caírem as torres, haverá ribeiros e correntes de água em todos os montes altos e em todas as colinas elevadas. 26 A luz da lua será como a do sol, e a do sol será sete vezes maior, como a luz de sete dias, no dia em que o Senhor tratar as fraturas do seu povo e curar a ferida do golpe que ele deu.

27 Eis que o nome do Senhor

vem de longe,

ardendo na sua ira,

no meio de espessas nuvens.

Os seus lábios

estão cheios de indignação,

e a sua língua

é como fogo devorador.

28 A sua respiração

é como a torrente

que transborda

e chega até o pescoço.

Ele vem peneirar as nações

com peneira de destruição;

porá na boca dos povos um freio

para fazer com que andem errantes.

29 Vocês cantarão como nas noites

em que se celebra

uma festa santa;

terão alegria de coração

como a daquele que sai

ao som da flauta

para ir ao monte do Senhor,

à Rocha de Israel.

30 O Senhor fará ouvir

a sua voz majestosa

e fará ver o golpe do seu braço,

que desce com indignação de ira,

no meio de chamas devoradoras,

de chuvas torrenciais,

de tempestades e de granizo.

31 Porque a Assíria ficará apavorada

com a voz do Senhor,

quando ele a ferir com

o seu bastão.

32 Cada pancada castigadora

que o Senhor lhe der com o bastão

será ao som de tamborins e harpas;

ele combaterá desferindo

golpes contra eles.

33 Porque há muito está preparada

a fogueira;

sim, preparada para o rei.

Ela é profunda e larga,

com fogo e lenha em abundância;

o sopro do Senhor,

como torrente de enxofre,

a acenderá.

1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith Jehovah, that take counsel, but not of me; and that make a league, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin, 2 that set out to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt! 3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. 4 For their princes are at Zoan, and their ambassadors are come to Hanes. 5 They shall all be ashamed because of a people that cannot profit them, that are not a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.

6 The burden of the beasts of the South.

Through the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit them. 7 For Egypt helpeth in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I called her Rahab that sitteth still.

8 Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever. 9 For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of Jehovah; 10 that say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits, 11 get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. 12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely thereon; 13 therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly in an instant. 14 And he shall break it as a potter’s vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing; so that there shall not be found among the pieces thereof a sherd wherewith to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.

15 For thus said the Lord Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. And ye would not: 16 but ye said, No, for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift. 17 One thousand shall flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill.

18 And therefore will Jehovah wait, that he may be gracious unto you; and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for Jehovah is a God of justice; blessed are all they that wait for him. 19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; thou shalt weep no more; he will surely be gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear, he will answer thee. 20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be hidden anymore, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers; 21 and thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it; when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. 22 And ye shall defile the overlaying of thy graven images of silver, and the plating of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as an unclean thing; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.

23 And he will give the rain for thy seed, wherewith thou shalt sow the ground; and bread of the increase of the ground, and it shall be fat and plenteous. In that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures; 24 the oxen likewise and the young asses that till the ground shall eat savory provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork. 25 And there shall be upon every lofty mountain, and upon every high hill, brooks and streams of waters, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that Jehovah bindeth up the hurt of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.

27 Behold, the name of Jehovah cometh from far, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is as a devouring fire; 28 and his breath is as an overflowing stream, that reacheth even unto the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction: and a bridle that causeth to err shall be in the jaws of the peoples. 29 Ye shall have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come unto the mountain of Jehovah, to the Rock of Israel. 30 And Jehovah will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, and tempest, and hailstones. 31 For through the voice of Jehovah shall the Assyrian be dismayed; with his rod will he smite him. 32 And every stroke of the appointed staff, which Jehovah shall lay upon him, shall be with the sound of tabrets and harps; and in battles with the brandishing of his arm will he fight with them. 33 For a Topheth is prepared of old; yea, for the king it is made ready; he hath made it deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of Jehovah, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.
