1 Mas para a terra que estava aflita não continuará a escuridão. Deus, nos primeiros tempos, tornou desprezível a terra de Zebulom e a terra de Naftali, mas, nos últimos tempos, tornará glorioso o caminho do mar, além do Jordão, Galileia dos gentios.

2 O povo que andava em trevas

viu grande luz,

e aos que viviam

na região da sombra da morte

resplandeceu-lhes a luz.

3 Tu, Senhor, tens multiplicado

este povo

e aumentaste a sua alegria;

eles se alegram diante de ti,

como se alegram

no tempo da colheita

e como exultam quando repartem

os despojos.

4 Porque tu quebraste o jugo

que pesava sobre eles,

a vara que lhes feria os ombros

e o cetro do seu opressor,

como no dia da vitória

sobre os midianitas.

5 Porque toda bota

com que o guerreiro

anda no tumulto da batalha

e toda roupa revolvida em sangue

serão queimadas,

servirão de pasto ao fogo.

6 Porque um menino nos nasceu,

um filho se nos deu.

O governo está

sobre os seus ombros,

e o seu nome será:

"Maravilhoso Conselheiro",

"Deus Forte", "Pai da Eternidade",

"Príncipe da Paz".

7 Ele estenderá o seu governo,

e haverá paz sem fim

sobre o trono de Davi

e sobre o seu reino,

para o estabelecer e para o firmar

com juízo e com justiça,

desde agora e para sempre.

O zelo do Senhor dos Exércitos

fará isto.

8 O Senhor enviou

uma palavra contra Jacó,

e ela caiu em Israel.

9 Todo o povo o saberá,

Efraim e os moradores de Samaria,

que com soberba

e orgulho de coração dizem:

10 "Os tijolos ruíram por terra,

mas nós vamos reconstruir

com pedras lavradas;

os sicômoros foram cortados,

mas nós os trocaremos por cedros."

11 Por isso, o Senhor suscitou

contra ele

os adversários de Rezim

e instigou os inimigos.

12 Do Oriente vieram os sírios,

do Ocidente vieram os filisteus

e devoraram Israel

com a boca escancarada.

Nem com tudo isto

se desviou a ira de Deus,

e a mão dele continua estendida.

13 Mas este povo não se voltou

para aquele que o feria,

nem buscou o Senhor dos Exércitos.

14 Por isso, num só dia,

o Senhor corta de Israel

a cabeça e a cauda,

a palma e o junco.

15 O ancião e o homem de respeito

são a cabeça,

e o profeta que ensina a mentira

é a cauda.

16 Porque os guias deste povo

são enganadores,

e os que por eles são guiados

são destruídos.

17 Por isso, o Senhor não se alegra

com os seus jovens

e não se compadece dos seus órfãos

e das suas viúvas,

porque todos eles

são ímpios e maus,

e todos falam tolices.

Nem com tudo isto

se desviou a ira de Deus,

e a mão dele continua estendida.

18 Porque a maldade

queima como um fogo,

ela devora os espinheiros

e as ervas daninhas;

incendeia as árvores do bosque,

e estas sobem em espessas nuvens

de fumaça.

19 Por causa da ira do Senhor

dos Exércitos,

a terra está em chamas,

e o povo é como lenha para o fogo;

ninguém poupa o seu irmão.

20 Abocanham à direita

e ainda têm fome,

devoram à esquerda

e não se fartam;

cada um come a carne

do seu próprio braço.

21 Manassés ataca Efraim,

e Efraim ataca Manassés,

e ambos, juntos, atacam Judá.

Nem com tudo isto

se desviou a ira de Deus,

e a mão dele continua estendida.

1 But there shall be no gloom to her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time hath he made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. 3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian. 5 For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall be for burning, for fuel of fire. 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. 9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart, 10 The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stone; the sycomores are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place. 11 Therefore Jehovah will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies, 12 the Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

13 Yet the people have not turned unto him that smote them, neither have they sought Jehovah of hosts. 14 Therefore Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day. 15 The elder and the honorable man, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. 16 For they that lead this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. 17 Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, neither will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for every one is profane and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

18 For wickedness burneth as the fire; it devoureth the briers and thorns; yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burnt up; and the people are as the fuel of fire: no man spareth his brother. 20 And one shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm: 21 Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
