1 O Senhor Deus também me mostrou o seguinte: um cesto de frutos de verão. 2 E perguntou:

— O que você está vendo, Amós?

E eu respondi:

— Um cesto de frutos de verão.

Então o Senhor me disse:

"Chegou o fim para o meu povo

de Israel;

não posso mais ignorar

o que fazem.

3 Naquele dia",

diz o Senhor Deus,

"os cânticos do templo

serão gritos de dor.

Muitos cadáveres!

Cadáveres jogados por toda parte!

Silêncio!"

4 Ouçam isto, vocês que pisam

os necessitados

e destroem os miseráveis da terra,

5 dizendo: "Quando passará

a Festa da Lua Nova,

para vendermos os cereais?

E o sábado, para abrirmos

os celeiros de trigo,

diminuindo a quantidade,

aumentando o peso

e enganando com balanças

desonestas,

6 para comprarmos os pobres

por dinheiro

e os necessitados

por um par de sandálias

e vendermos o refugo do trigo?"

7 O Senhor jurou

pela glória de Jacó, dizendo:

"Nunca me esquecerei

de nenhuma das suas obras!

8 Por causa disto, será que

a terra não vai tremer?

E não estarão enlutados

todos os seus moradores?

Toda a terra se levantará

como o Nilo,

será agitada e abaixará

como o rio do Egito."

9 "Naquele dia",

diz o Senhor Deus,

"farei com que o sol

se ponha ao meio-dia

e com que a terra se cubra

de trevas em pleno dia.

10 Transformarei as suas festas

em luto

e todos os seus cânticos

em lamentações.

Vou fazer com que todos vistam

roupas feitas de pano de saco

e rapem a cabeça.

Farei com que isso seja

como luto por um filho único,

luto cujo fim será

como dia de amargura."

11 "Eis que vêm dias",

diz o Senhor Deus,

"em que enviarei sobre a terra

fome — não de pão,

e sede — não de água,

mas de ouvir as palavras

do Senhor.

12 Andarão de mar a mar

e do Norte até o Oriente;

correrão por toda parte,

procurando a palavra do Senhor,

mas não a acharão.

13 Naquele dia, as moças bonitas

e os jovens desmaiarão de sede,

14 os que agora juram

pelo ídolo de Samaria

e dizem: ‘Tão certo como vive

o seu deus, ó Dã!’

E: ‘Tão certo como vive

o culto de Berseba!’

Esses mesmos cairão

e nunca mais se levantarão."

1 The Lord Jehovah showed me a basket of summer fruit.2 He said: »Amos, what do you see?« And I said, »A basket of summer fruit.« Then Jehovah said to me: »The end has come to my people Israel. I will spare them no longer.3 »The songs of the Temple will be weeping in that day,« said the Lord Jehovah: »the dead bodies shall be many. They will observe silence in every place.4 »Hear this, you who would swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail.5 »You say: When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit.6 »We may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat?7 »Jehovah has sworn by the pride of Jacob: I will never forget any of their works.8 »Will the land not tremble for this, and every one who dwells there mourn? I will rise up like the river. It will be troubled and sink again, like the River of Egypt.9 »It will happen in that day,« said the Lord Jehovah, »that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day.10 »I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation dirges. I will bring sackcloth on all loins and baldness on every head. I will make it as the mourning for an only son like the end of a bitter day.11 »Behold, the day is coming,« said the Lord Jehovah, »that I will send a famine in the land. Not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of Jehovah.12 »They will wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east. They will run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah, and will not find it.13 »In that day the fair virgins and the young men faint for thirst.14 »They who swear by the sin of Samaria. They will say: ‘As your god lives, O Dan, the way Beersheba lives.’ They will fall and never rise up again.«
