1 Deus disse a Jacó:

— Levante-se, vá para Betel e habite ali. Faça ali um altar ao Deus que lhe apareceu quando você fugia do seu irmão Esaú.

2 Então Jacó disse à sua família e a todos os que estavam com ele:

— Joguem fora os deuses estranhos que há no meio de vocês, purifiquem-se e troquem de roupa. 3 Vamos nos preparar e ir para Betel. Farei ali um altar ao Deus que me respondeu no dia da minha angústia e me acompanhou no caminho por onde andei.

4 Então deram a Jacó todos os deuses estranhos que tinham em mãos e as argolas que lhes pendiam das orelhas. E Jacó os escondeu debaixo do carvalho que está junto a Siquém.

5 Quando eles partiram, o terror de Deus invadiu as cidades vizinhas, e não perseguiram os filhos de Jacó. 6 Assim, Jacó chegou a Luz, chamada Betel, que fica na terra de Canaã, ele e todo o povo que estava com ele. 7 E edificou ali um altar. E àquele lugar deu o nome de El-Betel, porque ali Deus havia se revelado a ele quando estava fugindo do seu irmão.

8 Débora, a ama de Rebeca, morreu e foi sepultada ao pé de Betel, debaixo do carvalho que se chama Alom-Bacute.

9 Depois que Jacó havia retornado de Padã-Arã, Deus lhe apareceu outra vez e o abençoou. 10 Deus disse a ele:

— Você se chama Jacó, mas o seu nome não será mais Jacó; o seu nome será Israel.

E lhe deu o nome de Israel. 11 Disse-lhe mais:

— Eu sou o Deus Todo-Poderoso; seja fecundo e multiplique-se; uma nação e multidão de nações sairão de você, e reis procederão de você. 12 A terra que dei a Abraão e a Isaque darei também a você e, depois de você, à sua descendência.

13 E Deus se retirou dele, elevando-se do lugar onde lhe havia falado. 14 Então Jacó pôs uma coluna de pedra no lugar onde Deus havia falado com ele e derramou uma libação e azeite sobre ela. 15 Ao lugar onde Deus lhe havia falado, Jacó deu o nome de Betel.

16 Partiram de Betel, e, havendo ainda pequena distância para chegar a Efrata, Raquel deu à luz um filho, num parto que foi muito difícil. 17 Em meio às dores, a parteira disse a Raquel:

— Não tenha medo, pois você ainda terá este filho.

18 Ao sair-lhe a alma (porque morreu), deu ao filho o nome de Benoni. Mas seu pai lhe chamou Benjamim. 19 Assim, Raquel morreu e foi sepultada no caminho de Efrata, que é Belém. 20 Jacó levantou uma coluna sobre a sepultura de Raquel. Essa é a coluna da sepultura de Raquel até o dia de hoje. 21 Então Israel partiu e armou a sua tenda além da torre de Éder.

22 E aconteceu que, habitando Israel naquela terra, Rúben foi e se deitou com Bila, concubina de seu pai. E Israel ficou sabendo disso.

Eram doze os filhos de Israel. 23 Rúben, o primogênito de Jacó, Simeão, Levi, Judá, Issacar e Zebulom, filhos de Lia; 24 José e Benjamim, filhos de Raquel; 25 Dã e Naftali, filhos de Bila, serva de Raquel; 26 e Gade e Aser, filhos de Zilpa, serva de Lia. São estes os filhos de Jacó, que lhe nasceram em Padã-Arã.

27 Jacó veio a Isaque, seu pai, a Manre, a Quiriate-Arba (que é Hebrom), onde peregrinaram Abraão e Isaque. 28 Os dias da vida de Isaque foram cento e oitenta anos. 29 Após uma longa velhice, Isaque expirou e morreu, sendo reunido ao seu povo; e Esaú e Jacó, seus filhos, o sepultaram.

1 God said to Jacob: »Go to Bethel and dwell there. Make an altar to God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.«2 Jacob said to his family and those who were with him: »Get rid of the foreign gods that you have. Wash yourselves until you are ritually clean. Change your clothes.3 »After that let us go to Bethel. I will make an altar there to God, who answered me when I was troubled and who has been with me wherever I have gone.«4 So everyone gave Jacob their idols and their earrings. He buried them under the oak big tree near Shechem.5 Jacob and his family traveled through Canaan. God terrified the people in the towns so much that no one dared bother them.6 Finally, they reached Bethel, also known as Luz.7 Jacob built an altar there and called it God of Bethel. That was the place where God appeared to him when he was running from Esau.8 Deborah died. She was the servant who cared for Rebekah from childhood. She was buried near Bethel, under the holy tree. They named it Allon-bacuth weeping tree.9 God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram. He blessed him.10 God said to him: »Your name is Jacob. You shall no longer be called Jacob. Israel shall be your name.« Thus He called him Israel.11 God also said: »I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and an assembly of nations will come from you. Kings shall come forth from you.12 »The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you. I will give the land to your descendants after you.«13 Then God went up from him at the place where he had spoken with him.14 So Jacob set up a memorial, a stone marker, to mark the place where God had spoken with him. He poured a wine offering and olive oil on it.15 Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him Bethel House of God.16 After that they moved from Bethel. When there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. She had severe labor pains.17 When one of her pains hit, the midwife said: »Do not be afraid. You have another son!«18 Rachel was dying! With her last breath she named her son Ben-oni Son of My Sorrow, but his father named him Benjamin Son of My Right Hand.19 Rachel died and was buried on the way to Bethlehem Ephrath.20 Jacob set up a stone as a marker for her grave. The same marker is at Rachel’s grave today.21 Israel moved on again. He pitched his tent by the tower of Eder.22 While Israel lived in that region, Reuben went to bed with his father’s concubine Bilhah. Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons.23 The sons of Leah were Jacob’s firstborn Reuben, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.24 The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.25 The sons of Rachel’s slave Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.26 The sons of Leah’s slave Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These were Jacob’s sons, who were born in Paddan-aram.27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac, to Mamre’s city, Kiriath-arba Hebron. Abraham and Isaac had lived there for a while.28 Isaac was one hundred and eighty years old.29 Isaac took his last breath and died. He joined his ancestors in death at a very old age. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
