1 São estas as nações que o Senhor deixou ficar para, por meio delas, pôr Israel à prova, isto é, para provar todos os israelitas que não sabiam de todas as guerras de Canaã. 2 Ele fez isso tão somente para que as gerações dos filhos de Israel conhecessem a guerra, para lhes ensinar a guerra, pelo menos às gerações que, anteriormente, não sabiam disso. 3 Os que ficaram foram: cinco governantes dos filisteus, todos os cananeus, sidônios e heveus que habitavam as montanhas do Líbano, desde o monte de Baal-Hermom até a entrada de Hamate. 4 Estes ficaram para, por meio deles, o Senhor pôr Israel à prova, para saber se dariam ouvidos aos mandamentos que havia ordenado a seus pais por meio de Moisés. 5 Assim, os filhos de Israel moravam no meio dos cananeus, dos heteus, dos amorreus, dos ferezeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus. 6 Tomaram de suas filhas para si por mulheres e deram as suas próprias aos filhos deles; e rendiam culto a seus deuses.

7 Os filhos de Israel fizeram o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor e se esqueceram do Senhor, seu Deus; e renderam culto aos baalins e ao poste da deusa Aserá. 8 Então a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Israel, e ele os entregou nas mãos de Cusã-Risataim, rei da Mesopotâmia; e os filhos de Israel serviram Cusã-Risataim durante oito anos.

9 Os filhos de Israel clamaram ao Senhor, e o Senhor lhes suscitou um libertador, que os libertou: Otniel, filho de Quenaz, que era irmão de Calebe e mais novo do que ele. 10 O Espírito do Senhor veio sobre ele, e ele se tornou juiz de Israel. Foi para a guerra, e o Senhor lhe entregou nas mãos Cusã-Risataim, rei da Mesopotâmia, contra o qual ele prevaleceu.

11 Então a terra ficou em paz durante quarenta anos. Otniel, filho de Quenaz, morreu.

12 Os filhos de Israel tornaram a fazer o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor. Por isso, o Senhor deu poder a Eglom, rei dos moabitas, contra Israel, porque fizeram o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor. 13 Eglom se juntou com os filhos de Amom e os amalequitas, foi e derrotou Israel. E eles se apoderaram da cidade das palmeiras. 14 E os filhos de Israel serviram Eglom, rei dos moabitas, durante dezoito anos.

15 Então os filhos de Israel clamaram ao Senhor, e o Senhor lhes suscitou um libertador: Eúde, homem canhoto, filho de Gera, benjamita. Por meio dele, os filhos de Israel enviaram tributo a Eglom, rei dos moabitas. 16 Eúde fez para si um punhal de dois gumes, do comprimento de quase meio metro; e cingiu-o debaixo da sua roupa, do lado direito. 17 Então ele levou o tributo a Eglom, rei dos moabitas. Eglom era um homem muito gordo. 18 Depois de entregar o tributo, Eúde saiu com os carregadores do tributo. 19 Ele, porém, voltou do ponto em que estavam as imagens de escultura ao pé de Gilgal e disse ao rei:

— Tenho uma palavra secreta para o senhor, ó rei.

O rei disse:

— Cale-se.

Então todos os que estavam com o rei saíram de sua presença. 20 Eúde entrou numa sala de verão, que o rei tinha só para si, e onde ele estava sentado. Eúde disse:

— Tenho uma palavra de Deus para o senhor.

E Eglom se levantou da cadeira. 21 Então Eúde estendeu a mão esquerda, puxou o seu punhal do lado direito e o cravou na barriga do rei, 22 de tal maneira que entrou também o cabo com a lâmina; e, porque não tirou o punhal da barriga, a gordura se fechou sobre ele. Eúde saiu por uma portinhola, 23 passou para a antessala, depois de fechar e trancar as portas atrás de si. 24 Quando ele tinha saído, vieram os servos do rei e viram que as portas da sala de verão estavam trancadas. E disseram:

— Sem dúvida ele está fazendo as necessidades na sala de verão.

25 Esperaram até cansar; e, como o rei não abria a porta da sala, pegaram a chave e a abriram; e eis que o seu senhor estava morto, caído no chão. 26 Eúde escapou enquanto eles se demoravam e, tendo passado pelas imagens de escultura, foi para Seirá. 27 Tendo chegado, tocou a trombeta nas montanhas de Efraim; e os filhos de Israel desceram com ele das montanhas, indo ele à frente. 28 E lhes disse:

— Sigam-me, porque o Senhor entregou nas mãos de vocês os seus inimigos, os moabitas.

Eles seguiram Eúde e tomaram os vaus do Jordão contra os moabitas, e a nenhum deles deixaram passar. 29 Naquele tempo, mataram uns dez mil homens moabitas, todos robustos e valentes; e não escapou nem sequer um. 30 Assim, naquele dia, Moabe foi subjugado por Israel.

E a terra ficou em paz durante oitenta anos.

31 Depois de Eúde veio Sangar, filho de Anate, que matou seiscentos filisteus com uma aguilhada de bois; e também ele libertou Israel.

1 Now these are the nations that Jehovah left to test the Israelites who had not known all the wars of Canaan.2 He did this to teach warfare to the generations of the children of Israel who had not had previous battle experience.3 Those left in the land were the five Philistine cities, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanon Mountains from Mount Baal Hermon as far as Hamath Pass.4 They were to be a test for Israel. This would find out whether or not the Israelites would obey the commandments that Jehovah gave their ancestors through Moses.5 The people of Israel settled down among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.6 They intermarried with them and worshiped their gods.7 The people of Israel forgot Jehovah their God. They sinned against him and worshiped the idols of Baal and Asherah.8 Jehovah became angry at Israel and let King Cushan Rishathaim of Mesopotamia conquer them. They were subject to him for eight years.9 The Israelites cried out to Jehovah, and he sent someone to free them. This was Othniel, the son of Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz.10 The Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he became Israel’s leader judge. Othniel went to war, and Jehovah gave him the victory over the king of Mesopotamia.11 There was peace in the land for forty years until Othniel died.12 The people of Israel sinned against Jehovah again. Because of this Jehovah made King Eglon of Moab stronger than Israel.13 Eglon joined the Ammonites and the Amalekites. They defeated Israel and captured Jericho, the city of palm trees.14 The Israelites were subject to Eglon for eighteen years.15 Then the Israelites cried out to Jehovah. So he sent someone to free them. This was Ehud, a left-handed man, who was the son of Gera, from the tribe of Benjamin. The people of Israel sent Ehud to King Eglon of Moab with gifts for him.16 Ehud made himself a double-edged sword about a foot and a half long. He fastened it on his right side under his clothes.17 He took the gifts to Eglon, who was a very fat man.18 When Ehud gave him the gifts, he told the men who carried them to go back home.19 But Ehud turned back at the carved stones near Gilgal, went back to Eglon, and said: »Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.« So the king ordered his servants: »Leave us alone!« Then they all went out.20 The king was sitting there alone in his cool room on the roof. Ehud went over to him and said: »I have a message from God for you.« The king stood up.21 With his left hand Ehud took the sword from his right side and plunged it into the king’s belly.22 The whole sword went in, handle and all, and the fat covered it up. Ehud did not pull it out of the king’s belly, and it stuck out behind, between his legs.23 Ehud went outside, closed the doors behind him, locked them.24 Then he left. The servants came and saw that the doors to the upstairs room were locked. They only thought that the king was inside, relieving himself.25 They waited as long as they thought they should. When he still did not open the door, they took the key and opened it. There lying dead on the floor was their master.26 Ehud got away while they were waiting. He went past the carved stones and escaped to Seirah.27 When he arrived there in the hill country of Ephraim, he blew a trumpet to call the people of Israel to battle. Then he led them down from the hills.28 He said to them: »Follow me! Jehovah has given you victory over your enemies, the Moabites.« So they followed Ehud and captured the place where the Moabites were to cross the Jordan. They did not allow anyone to cross.29 They killed about ten thousand of the best Moabite soldiers. None of them escaped.30 That day the Israelites defeated Moab. There was peace in the land for eighty years.31 The next leader was Shamgar son of Anath. He too rescued Israel, and did so by killing six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad.
