1 Os filhos de Israel fizeram o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor e por isso o Senhor os entregou nas mãos dos midianitas durante sete anos. 2 Os midianitas prevaleceram contra Israel. E, por causa dos midianitas, os filhos de Israel fizeram para si as covas que estão nos montes, as cavernas e as fortificações. 3 Porque, cada vez que os israelitas semeavam, os midianitas, os amalequitas e os povos do Oriente os atacavam. 4 Acampavam em Israel, destruindo os produtos da terra até a vizinhança de Gaza, e não deixavam em Israel sustento algum, nem ovelhas, nem bois, nem jumentos. 5 Pois vinham com o seu gado e as suas tendas, como uma nuvem de gafanhotos. Eram tantos, que não se podiam contar, nem a eles nem aos seus camelos; e entravam na terra para a destruir. 6 Assim, Israel ficou muito debilitado com a presença dos midianitas. Então os filhos de Israel clamaram ao Senhor.

7 Quando os filhos de Israel clamaram ao Senhor por causa dos midianitas, 8 o Senhor lhes enviou um profeta, que lhes disse:

— Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: "Eu tirei vocês do Egito, da casa da servidão. 9 Eu os livrei das mãos dos egípcios e das mãos de todos os opressores. Eu os expulsei e dei a vocês a terra deles. 10 E disse: ‘Eu sou o Senhor, o Deus de vocês; não adorem os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra vocês estão morando.’ Mas vocês não deram ouvidos à minha voz."

11 Então o Anjo do Senhor veio e sentou-se debaixo do carvalho que está em Ofra, que pertencia a Joás, da família de Abiezer. Gideão, filho de Joás, estava malhando o trigo no lagar, para o pôr a salvo dos midianitas. 12 Então o Anjo do Senhor lhe apareceu e lhe disse:

— O Senhor está com você, homem valente.

13 Gideão respondeu:

— Ah! Meu senhor! Se o Senhor Deus está conosco, por que nos aconteceu tudo isto? E onde estão todas as suas maravilhas que os nossos pais nos contaram? Eles disseram: "O Senhor nos tirou do Egito!" Porém, agora, o Senhor nos abandonou e nos entregou nas mãos dos midianitas.

14 Então o Senhor se virou para Gideão e disse:

— Vá nessa força que você tem e livre Israel das mãos dos midianitas. Não é verdade que eu estou enviando você?

15 Gideão respondeu:

— Ah! Meu Senhor! Como livrarei Israel? Eis que a minha família é a mais pobre em Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa de meu pai.

16 Mas o Senhor disse:

— Já que eu estou ao seu lado, você derrotará os midianitas como se fossem um só homem.

17 Gideão respondeu:

— Se de fato encontrei favor aos teus olhos, dá-me um sinal de que és tu, Senhor, que estás falando comigo. 18 Peço que não te afastes daqui até que eu volte, traga a minha oferta e a coloque diante de ti.

Ele respondeu:

— Eu esperarei até que você volte.

19 Gideão entrou em casa, preparou um cabrito e fez pães sem fermento com vinte litros de farinha. Pôs a carne num cesto, e o caldo, numa panela. Depois, trouxe tudo até debaixo do carvalho e o entregou ao Anjo. 20 Porém o Anjo de Deus lhe disse:

— Pegue a carne e os pães sem fermento e coloque-os sobre esta rocha. Depois, derrame o caldo em cima.

Foi o que Gideão fez. 21 Então o Anjo do Senhor estendeu a ponta do cajado que trazia na mão e tocou a carne e os pães sem fermento. Saiu fogo da rocha e queimou a carne e os pães. E o Anjo do Senhor desapareceu da presença dele. 22 Quando Gideão viu que era o Anjo do Senhor, disse:

— Ai de mim, Senhor Deus! Pois vi o Anjo do Senhor face a face.

23 Mas o Senhor lhe disse:

— Que a paz esteja com você! Não tenha medo! Você não morrerá!

24 Então Gideão edificou ali um altar ao Senhor e lhe deu o nome de "O Senhor É Paz". Até o dia de hoje esse altar está em Ofra, que pertence à família de Abiezer.

25 Naquela mesma noite, o Senhor disse a Gideão:

— Leve o touro que pertence a seu pai, a saber, o segundo touro de sete anos, e derrube o altar de Baal que é do seu pai, e corte o poste da deusa Aserá que está junto ao altar. 26 No alto desse lugar fortificado faça para o Senhor, seu Deus, um altar em camadas de pedra. Depois, pegue o segundo touro e ofereça-o em holocausto com a lenha do poste da deusa Aserá que você irá cortar.

27 Então Gideão levou dez homens dos seus servos e fez como o Senhor lhe havia falado. Mas, porque teve medo da casa de seu pai e dos homens daquela cidade, não o fez de dia, mas de noite.

28 De madrugada, quando os homens daquela cidade se levantaram, eis que o altar de Baal estava derrubado, e o poste da deusa Aserá que estava junto dele, cortado; e o referido segundo touro tinha sido oferecido no altar que havia sido edificado. 29 E diziam uns aos outros:

— Quem fez isto?

E, perguntando e inquirindo, disseram:

— Quem fez isso foi Gideão, o filho de Joás.

30 Então os homens daquela cidade disseram a Joás:

— Traga o seu filho para fora, para que seja morto, pois derrubou o altar de Baal e cortou o poste da deusa Aserá que estava junto dele.

31 Porém Joás disse a todos os que se puseram contra ele:

— Vocês querem defender a causa de Baal? Vocês querem livrá-lo? Quem defender a causa dele será morto ainda esta manhã. Se ele é deus, que defenda a si mesmo; afinal, derrubaram o seu altar.

32 Naquele dia Gideão passou a ser chamado de Jerubaal, porque foi dito: "Que Baal defenda a sua causa contra ele, pois foi ele quem derrubou o seu altar."

33 Todos os midianitas, amalequitas e povos do Oriente se ajuntaram, passaram o Jordão e acamparam no vale de Jezreel. 34 Então o Espírito do Senhor revestiu Gideão, que fez soar o alarme, convocando os homens da família de Abiezer a segui-lo. 35 Enviou mensageiros por toda a tribo de Manassés, que também foi convocada a segui-lo. Enviou ainda mensageiros a Aser, a Zebulom e a Naftali, que foram se encontrar com ele.

36 Então Gideão se dirigiu a Deus, dizendo:

— Se realmente queres livrar Israel por minha mão, como disseste, 37 eis que eu porei uma porção de lã na eira. Se o orvalho estiver somente nela, e a terra ao redor estiver seca, então saberei que irás livrar Israel por meio de mim, como disseste.

38 E assim aconteceu. No outro dia, Gideão se levantou de madrugada e, apertando a lã, do orvalho que havia nela espremeu uma taça cheia de água.

39 Gideão se dirigiu a Deus mais uma vez, dizendo:

— Não se acenda contra mim a tua ira, se eu falar somente mais esta vez. Peço-te que me deixes fazer mais uma prova com a lã: que desta vez só a lã esteja seca, e que haja orvalho na terra ao redor dela.

40 E Deus assim o fez naquela noite, pois só a lã estava seca, e sobre a terra ao redor dela havia orvalho.

1 Again the people of Israel sinned against Jehovah. Therefore he let the people of Midian rule them for seven years.2 The Midianites were very oppressive over Israel. So much so that the people of Israel hid from them in caves and other safe places in the mountains.3 When the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites along with the desert tribes attacked them.4 They camped on the land and destroyed the crops as far south as Gaza. They took all the sheep, cattle, and donkeys, and left nothing for the Israelites to live on.5 They came with their livestock and tents, as thick as locusts. It was impossible to count the men and their camels. They entered the land and destroyed it.6 Israel was helpless against them.7 The people of Israel cried out to Jehovah for help against the Midianites.8 Then Jehovah sent a man, a prophet, to the Israelites. He said to them: »Jehovah, the God of Israel says, ‘It was I who brought you out of slavery in Egypt.9 »‘I rescued you from the Egyptians and from the people who fought you in this land. I drove them out as you advanced. I gave you their land.10 »‘I said to you: ‘I am Jehovah your God. You should not worship the gods of the Amorites, whose land you are now living in. But you have not listened to me.’«11 The angel of Jehovah came to the village of Ophrah. He sat under the oak tree that belonged to Joash, a man of the clan of Abiezer. His son Gideon was secretly threshing wheat in a wine press, so that the Midianites would not see him.12 Jehovah’s angel appeared to him there and said: »Jehovah is with you, mighty man of valor!«13 Gideon said to him: »May I ask, sir, why has all this happened to us if Jehovah is with us? What happened to all the wonderful things that our fathers told us Jehovah used to do, how he brought them out of Egypt? Jehovah has abandoned us. He left us to the mercy of the Midianites.«14 Jehovah answered him: »Go in the strength you have and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you.«15 Gideon replied: »But Jehovah, how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the tribe of Manasseh. I am the least important member of my family.«16 Jehovah answered: »You can do it. I will help you. You will crush the Midianites as easily as if they were only one man.«17 Gideon replied: »If you are pleased with me, give me proof that you are really Jehovah.18 »Please do not leave until I return and bring you an offering.« Jehovah said: »I will stay until you come back.«19 So Gideon went into his house and cooked a young goat and used a bushel of flour to make bread without any yeast. He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, brought them to Jehovah’s angel under the oak tree, and gave them to him.20 The angel told him: »Put the meat and the bread on this rock, and pour the broth over them.« Gideon did so.21 Jehovah’s angel reached out and touched the meat and the bread with the end of the stick he was holding. Fire came out of the rock and burned up the meat and the bread. Then the angel disappeared.22 With that Gideon realized that it was Jehovah’s angel he saw. He said in terror: »Sovereign Lord Jehovah! I have seen your angel face-to-face!«23 Jehovah told him: »Peace. Do not be afraid. You will not die.«24 Gideon built an altar to Jehovah there and named it: »Jehovah is Peace.« Jehovah-shalom It is still standing at Ophrah and belongs to the clan of Abiezer.25 That night Jehovah told Gideon: »Take your father’s bull and another seven year old bull, tear down your father’s altar to Baal, and cut down the symbol of the goddess Asherah, that is beside it.26 »Build a well-constructed altar to Jehovah your God on top of this mound. Take the second bull and burn it as a whole offering. Cut down the symbol of Asherah and use it for firewood.«27 So Gideon took ten of his servants and did what Jehovah instructed him to do. He was afraid of his family and the people in town, so he did it at night.28 The people in town got up early the next morning. They found that the altar to Baal and the symbol of Asherah had been cut down. The second bull had been burned on the altar that was built there.29 They asked each other: »Who did this?« They investigated and found out that Gideon, son of Joash, did it.30 They said to Joash: »Bring your son here. We will kill him!« He tore down the altar to Baal and cut down the symbol of Asherah!31 Joash replied: »Are you arguing for Baal? Are you defending him? Anyone who argues for him will be killed before morning. If Baal really is a god he can defend himself. It is his altar that was torn down.«32 From then on Gideon was known as Jerubbaal, because Joash said: »Let Baal defend himself for his altar was torn down.«33 The Midianites, Amalekites, and the desert tribes assembled, crossed the Jordan River, and camped in Jezreel Valley.34 The Spirit of Jehovah took control of Gideon. He blew a trumpet to call the men of the clan of Abiezer to follow him.35 He sent messengers throughout the territory of both parts of Manasseh to call them to follow him. He sent messengers to the tribes of Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they also came to join him.36 Gideon said to God: »You have said you will rescue Israel using me.37 »Look I will place wool on the threshing floor where we thresh the wheat. If in the morning there is dew only on the wool but not on the ground, I will know that you are going to use me to rescue Israel.«38 That is what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the wool and wrung enough dew out of it to fill a bowl with water.39 Then Gideon said to God: »Do not be angry with me. Allow me to speak just once more. Please let me make one more test with the wool. This time let the wool be dry, and the ground wet.«40 That night God did it. The next morning the wool was dry, but the ground was wet with dew.
