Exodus 15

The Song of Moses and Miriam

1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

"I will sing to the Lord,

for he is highly exalted.

Both horse and driver

he has hurled into the sea.

2 "The Lord is my strength and my defense*15:2 Or song;

he has become my salvation.

He is my God, and I will praise him,

my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

3 The Lord is a warrior;

the Lord is his name.

4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army

he has hurled into the sea.

The best of Pharaoh’s officers

are drowned in the Red Sea.*15:4 Or the Sea of Reeds; also in verse 22

5 The deep waters have covered them;

they sank to the depths like a stone.

6 Your right hand, Lord,

was majestic in power.

Your right hand, Lord,

shattered the enemy.

7 "In the greatness of your majesty

you threw down those who opposed you.

You unleashed your burning anger;

it consumed them like stubble.

8 By the blast of your nostrils

the waters piled up.

The surging waters stood up like a wall;

the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.

9 The enemy boasted,

‘I will pursue, I will overtake them.

I will divide the spoils;

I will gorge myself on them.

I will draw my sword

and my hand will destroy them.’

10 But you blew with your breath,

and the sea covered them.

They sank like lead

in the mighty waters.

11 Who among the gods

is like you, Lord?

Who is like you—

majestic in holiness,

awesome in glory,

working wonders?

12 "You stretch out your right hand,

and the earth swallows your enemies.

13 In your unfailing love you will lead

the people you have redeemed.

In your strength you will guide them

to your holy dwelling.

14 The nations will hear and tremble;

anguish will grip the people of Philistia.

15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified,

the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling,

the people*15:15 Or rulers of Canaan will melt away;

16 terror and dread will fall on them.

By the power of your arm

they will be as still as a stone—

until your people pass by, Lord,

until the people you bought*15:16 Or created pass by.

17 You will bring them in and plant them

on the mountain of your inheritance—

the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling,

the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.

18 "The Lord reigns

for ever and ever."

19 When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen*15:19 Or charioteers went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. 20 Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. 21 Miriam sang to them:

"Sing to the Lord,

for he is highly exalted.

Both horse and driver

he has hurled into the sea."

The Waters of Marah and Elim

22 Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. 23 When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.*15:23 Marah means bitter.) 24 So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What are we to drink?"

25 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink.

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. 26 He said, "If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you."

27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.

O cântico de Moisés

1 Então, Moisés e os israelitas entoaram este cântico ao Senhor:

"Cantarei ao Senhor,

pois triunfou gloriosamente.

Lançou ao mar o cavalo

e o seu cavaleiro!

2 "O Senhor é a minha força e a minha canção;*15.2 Ou proteção.

ele é a minha salvação!

Ele é o meu Deus, e eu o louvarei;

é o Deus do meu pai, e eu o exaltarei!

3 O Senhor é guerreiro;

o seu nome é Senhor.

4 Ele lançou ao mar

os carros de guerra

e o exército do faraó.

Os seus melhores oficiais

afogaram-se no mar Vermelho.*15.4 Ou mar de Juncos.

5 Águas profundas os encobriram;

como pedra desceram ao fundo.

6 Senhor, a tua mão direita

foi majestosa em poder.

Senhor, a tua mão direita

despedaçou o inimigo.

7 "Na grandeza da tua majestade,

derrubaste os que se levantaram contra ti.

Enviaste o teu ardente furor,

que os consumiu como palha.

8 Pelo forte sopro das tuas narinas,

as águas se amontoaram.

As águas turbulentas firmaram-se como uma parede;

as águas profundas congelaram-se no coração do mar.

9 O inimigo dizia:

‘Eu os perseguirei e os alcançarei;

dividirei o despojo até ficar satisfeito.

Com a espada na mão, eu os destruirei’.

10 Mas sopraste o teu vento,

e o mar os encobriu.

Afundaram como chumbo

nas águas poderosas.

11 Quem entre os deuses

é semelhante a ti, Senhor?

Quem é semelhante a ti?

Majestoso em santidade,

admirável em glória,

autor de prodígios?

12 "Estendes a tua mão direita,

e a terra os engole.

13 Com o teu amor leal,

conduzes o povo que resgataste;

com a tua força, tu o levas à tua santa habitação.

14 As nações ouvirão e estremecerão;

angústia se apoderará do povo da Filístia.

15 Os chefes de Edom ficarão aterrorizados;

os poderosos de Moabe serão tomados de tremor;

os habitantes de Canaã se desesperarão;

16 terror e medo cairão sobre eles.

Pelo poder do teu braço, ficam paralisados como pedra,

até que passe o teu povo, ó Senhor,

até que passe o povo que tu compraste.*15.16 Ou criaste.

17 Tu o farás entrar e o plantarás

no monte da tua herança;

no lugar, ó Senhor,

que fizeste para a tua habitação;

no santuário, ó Senhor,

que as tuas mãos estabeleceram.

18 "O Senhor reinará por todo o sempre".

19 Quando os cavalos, os carros de guerra e os cavaleiros*15.19 Ou condutores de carros de guerra. do faraó entraram no mar, o Senhor fez que as águas do mar se voltassem sobre eles, mas os israelitas atravessaram o mar pisando em terra seca. 20 Então, Miriã, profetisa e irmã de Arão, pegou um tamborim, e todas as mulheres a seguiram, tocando tamborins e dançando. 21 Miriã lhes respondia, cantando:

"Cantem ao Senhor,

pois triunfou gloriosamente.

Lançou ao mar o cavalo

e o seu cavaleiro".

As águas de Mara e de Elim

22 Depois, Moisés conduziu Israel desde o mar Vermelho até o deserto de Sur. Durante três dias, caminharam no deserto sem encontrar água. 23 Então, chegaram a Mara, mas não puderam beber das águas de lá porque eram amargas. Esta é a razão pela qual o lugar se chama Mara.*15.23 Mara significa amarga.24 O povo, então, começou a se queixar a Moisés, dizendo:

— Que beberemos?

25 Moisés clamou ao Senhor, e este lhe indicou um pedaço de madeira. Ele o lançou na água, e esta se tornou boa.

Em Mara, o Senhor lhes deu estatutos e ordenanças e os pôs à prova, 26 dizendo-lhes:

— Se vocês derem atenção à voz do Senhor, o seu Deus, e fizerem o que é justo diante dele, se derem ouvidos aos seus mandamentos e obedecerem a todos os seus estatutos, não trarei sobre vocês nenhuma das doenças que eu trouxe sobre os egípcios, pois eu sou o Senhor que os cura.

27 Depois, chegaram a Elim, onde havia doze fontes de água e setenta palmeiras, e acamparam junto àquelas águas.
