Exodus 28

The Priestly Garments

1 "Have Aaron your brother brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so they may serve me as priests. 2 Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor. 3 Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest. 4 These are the garments they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so they may serve me as priests. 5 Have them use gold, and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and fine linen.

The Ephod

6 "Make the ephod of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen—the work of skilled hands. 7 It is to have two shoulder pieces attached to two of its corners, so it can be fastened. 8 Its skillfully woven waistband is to be like it—of one piece with the ephod and made with gold, and with blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and with finely twisted linen.

9 "Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel 10 in the order of their birth—six names on one stone and the remaining six on the other. 11 Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings 12 and fasten them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear the names on his shoulders as a memorial before the Lord. 13 Make gold filigree settings 14 and two braided chains of pure gold, like a rope, and attach the chains to the settings.

The Breastpiece

15 "Fashion a breastpiece for making decisions—the work of skilled hands. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen. 16 It is to be square—a span*28:16 That is, about 9 inches or about 23 centimeters long and a span wide—and folded double. 17 Then mount four rows of precious stones on it. The first row shall be carnelian, chrysolite and beryl; 18 the second row shall be turquoise, lapis lazuli and emerald; 19 the third row shall be jacinth, agate and amethyst; 20 the fourth row shall be topaz, onyx and jasper.*28:20 The precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain. Mount them in gold filigree settings. 21 There are to be twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.

22 "For the breastpiece make braided chains of pure gold, like a rope. 23 Make two gold rings for it and fasten them to two corners of the breastpiece. 24 Fasten the two gold chains to the rings at the corners of the breastpiece, 25 and the other ends of the chains to the two settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front. 26 Make two gold rings and attach them to the other two corners of the breastpiece on the inside edge next to the ephod. 27 Make two more gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod, close to the seam just above the waistband of the ephod. 28 The rings of the breastpiece are to be tied to the rings of the ephod with blue cord, connecting it to the waistband, so that the breastpiece will not swing out from the ephod.

29 "Whenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he will bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of decision as a continuing memorial before the Lord. 30 Also put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastpiece, so they may be over Aaron’s heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord.

Other Priestly Garments

31 "Make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth, 32 with an opening for the head in its center. There shall be a woven edge like a collar*28:32 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain. around this opening, so that it will not tear. 33 Make pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn around the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them. 34 The gold bells and the pomegranates are to alternate around the hem of the robe. 35 Aaron must wear it when he ministers. The sound of the bells will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the Lord and when he comes out, so that he will not die.

36 "Make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: holy to the Lord. 37 Fasten a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban; it is to be on the front of the turban. 38 It will be on Aaron’s forehead, and he will bear the guilt involved in the sacred gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their gifts may be. It will be on Aaron’s forehead continually so that they will be acceptable to the Lord.

39 "Weave the tunic of fine linen and make the turban of fine linen. The sash is to be the work of an embroiderer. 40 Make tunics, sashes and caps for Aaron’s sons to give them dignity and honor. 41 After you put these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.

42 "Make linen undergarments as a covering for the body, reaching from the waist to the thigh. 43 Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die.

"This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants.

As vestes sacerdotais

1 — Separe Arão, o seu irmão, dentre os israelitas, e também os filhos dele, Nadabe e Abiú, Eleazar e Itamar, para que me sirvam como sacerdotes. 2 Para Arão, o seu irmão, faça vestes sagradas que lhe confiram dignidade e honra. 3 Diga a todos os homens habilidosos, aos quais dei sabedoria, que façam vestes para a consagração de Arão, a fim de que me sirva como sacerdote. 4 São estas as vestes que farão: um peitoral, um colete sacerdotal, um manto, uma túnica bordada, um turbante e um cinto. A fim de que Arão, o seu irmão, e os filhos dele me sirvam como sacerdotes, serão feitas essas vestes sagradas, 5 para as quais serão usados linho fino, ouro e fios de tecidos azul, púrpura e escarlate.

O colete sacerdotal

6 — Faça o colete sacerdotal de linho fino trançado de ouro e de fios de tecidos azul, púrpura e escarlate — trabalho artesanal. 7 Terá duas ombreiras atadas às suas duas extremidades para uni-lo. 8 O cinturão de pano e o colete por ele preso serão feitos da mesma peça. O cinturão também será de linho fino trançado de ouro e de fios de tecidos azul, púrpura e escarlate.

9 — Pegue duas pedras de ônix e grave os nomes dos filhos de Israel, 10 por ordem de nascimento: seis nomes em uma pedra e seis na outra. 11 Grave os nomes dos filhos de Israel nas duas pedras como um lapidador grava um selo. Em seguida, prenda-as em filigranas de ouro, 12 costurando-as nas ombreiras do colete sacerdotal, como pedras memoriais para os filhos de Israel. Assim, Arão levará os nomes nos seus ombros como memorial diante do Senhor. 13 Faça filigranas de ouro 14 e duas correntes de ouro puro, entrelaçadas como uma corda; prenda as correntes entrelaçadas às filigranas.

O peitoral

15 — Faça um peitoral de decisões — trabalho artesanal. Faça-o como o colete sacerdotal: de linho fino trançado de ouro e de fios de tecidos azul, púrpura e escarlate. 16 Será quadrado, com um palmo de comprimento por um palmo de largura,*28.16 Isto é, cerca de 22,5 centímetros. e dobrado em dois. 17 Em seguida, fixe nele quatro fileiras de pedras preciosas. Na primeira fileira, haverá uma cornalina, um topázio e um berilo; 18 na segunda, uma turquesa, uma safira e um quartzo; 19 na terceira, um jacinto, uma ágata e uma ametista; 20 na quarta, um crisólito, um ônix e um jaspe.*28.20 A identificação precisa de algumas dessas pedras não é conhecida. Elas serão fixadas em filigranas de ouro. 21 Serão doze pedras, uma para cada nome dos filhos de Israel, cada uma gravada como um selo, com o nome de uma das doze tribos.

22 — Para o peitoral, faça correntes de ouro puro trançadas como cordas. 23 Faça também duas argolas de ouro e prenda-as nas duas extremidades do peitoral. 24 Prenda as duas correntes de ouro nas duas argolas, nas extremidades do peitoral; 25 e as outras extremidades das correntes nas duas filigranas, unindo-as às peças das ombreiras do colete sacerdotal, na parte da frente. 26 Faça outras duas argolas de ouro e prenda-as nas outras duas extremidades do peitoral na borda interna próxima ao colete sacerdotal. 27 Faça mais duas argolas de ouro e prenda-as na parte inferior das ombreiras, na frente do colete sacerdotal, próximas da costura logo acima da costura do colete sacerdotal. 28 As argolas do peitoral serão amarradas às argolas do colete sacerdotal com um cordão azul, ligando o peitoral ao cinturão, para que o peitoral não se separe do colete sacerdotal.

29 — Toda vez que Arão entrar no Lugar Santo, levará os nomes dos filhos de Israel sobre o coração no peitoral de decisões, como memorial permanente diante do Senhor. 30 Ponha também o Urim e o Tumim*28.30 Objetos utilizados para conhecer a vontade de Deus. no peitoral de decisões, para que estejam sobre o coração de Arão sempre que ele entrar na presença do Senhor. Assim, Arão levará sempre sobre o coração, na presença do Senhor, o meio para tomar decisões em Israel.

Outras vestes sacerdotais

31 — Faça o manto do colete sacerdotal inteiramente de fios de tecido azul, 32 com uma abertura para a cabeça no centro. Ao redor dessa abertura, haverá uma dobra costurada como uma gola, para que não se rasgue. 33 Faça romãs de fios de tecidos azul, púrpura e escarlate em volta da costura do manto, intercaladas com pequenos sinos de ouro. 34 Os sinos de ouro e as romãs se alternarão por toda a costura em volta do manto. 35 Arão o vestirá quando ministrar. O som dos sinos será ouvido quando ele entrar no Lugar Santo diante do Senhor e quando sair, para que não morra.

36 — Faça um diadema de ouro puro e grave nele como se grava um selo:

Consagrado ao Senhor.

37 Prenda-o na parte da frente do turbante com um cordão azul. 38 Estará sobre a testa de Arão; assim, ele levará a culpa em relação às coisas santas que os israelitas consagraram, ao fazerem todas as suas ofertas. Estará sempre sobre a testa de Arão, para que as ofertas sejam aceitas pelo Senhor.

39 — Teça a túnica e o turbante com linho fino. O cinto será feito como obra de bordador. 40 Faça também túnicas, cintos e gorros para os filhos de Arão, para conferir-lhes dignidade e honra. 41 Depois de vestir Arão, o seu irmão, e os filhos dele, unja-os, ordene-os e consagre-os para que me sirvam como sacerdotes.

42 — Faça-lhes calções de linho que vão da cintura até a coxa, que lhes cubra a nudez. 43 Arão e os filhos terão que vesti-los sempre que entrarem na tenda do encontro ou quando se aproximarem do altar para ministrar no Lugar Santo, para que não incorram em culpa e morram. Este é um estatuto perpétuo para Arão e para os seus descendentes.
