1 E Saulo aprovou a morte de Estêvão.

Naquele mesmo dia a igreja de Jerusalém começou a sofrer uma grande perseguição. E todos os cristãos, menos os apóstolos, foram espalhados pelas regiões da Judeia e da Samaria. 2 Alguns homens religiosos sepultaram Estêvão e choraram muito por causa da sua morte.

3 Porém Saulo se esforçava para acabar com a igreja. Ele ia de casa em casa, arrastava homens e mulheres e os jogava na cadeia.

4 Aqueles que tinham sido espalhados anunciavam o evangelho por toda parte. 5 Filipe foi até a capital da Samaria e anunciava Cristo às pessoas dali, 6 e as multidões ouviam com atenção o que ele dizia. Todos o escutavam e viam os milagres que ele fazia. 7 Os espíritos maus, gritando, saíam de muitas pessoas, e muitos coxos e paralíticos eram curados. 8 E assim o povo daquela cidade ficou muito alegre.

9 Morava ali um homem chamado Simão, que desde algum tempo atrás fazia feitiçaria entre os samaritanos e os havia deixado muito admirados. Ele se fazia de importante, 10 e os moradores de Samaria, desde os mais importantes até os mais humildes, escutavam com muita atenção o que ele dizia. Eles afirmavam:

— Este homem é o poder de Deus! Ele é "o Grande Poder"!

11 Eles davam atenção ao que Simão fazia porque durante muito tempo ele os havia deixado assombrados com as suas feitiçarias. 12 Mas eles acreditaram na mensagem de Filipe a respeito da boa notícia do Reino de Deus e a respeito de Jesus Cristo e foram batizados, tanto homens como mulheres. 13 O próprio Simão também creu. E, depois de ser batizado, acompanhava Filipe de perto, muito admirado com os grandes milagres e maravilhas que ele fazia.

14 Os apóstolos, que estavam em Jerusalém, ficaram sabendo que o povo de Samaria também havia recebido a palavra de Deus e por isso mandaram Pedro e João para lá. 15 Quando os dois chegaram, oraram para que a gente de Samaria recebesse o Espírito Santo, 16 pois o Espírito ainda não tinha descido sobre nenhum deles. Eles apenas haviam sido batizados em nome do Senhor Jesus. 17 Aí Pedro e João puseram as mãos sobre eles, e assim eles receberam o Espírito Santo.

18 Simão viu que, quando os apóstolos punham as mãos sobre as pessoas, Deus dava a elas o Espírito Santo. Por isso ofereceu dinheiro a Pedro e a João, 19 dizendo:

— Quero que vocês me deem também esse poder. Assim, quando eu puser as mãos sobre alguém, essa pessoa receberá o Espírito Santo.

20 Então Pedro respondeu:

— Que Deus mande você e o seu dinheiro para o inferno! Você pensa que pode conseguir com dinheiro o dom de Deus? 21 Você não tem direito de tomar parte no nosso trabalho porque o seu coração não é honesto diante de Deus. 22 Arrependa-se, deixe o seu plano perverso e peça ao Senhor que o perdoe por essa má intenção. 23 Vejo que você está cheio de inveja, uma inveja amarga como fel, e vejo também que você está preso pelo pecado.

24 Aí Simão disse a Pedro e a João:

— Por favor, peçam ao Senhor por mim para que não aconteça comigo nada do que vocês disseram.

25 Depois de terem dado o seu testemunho e de terem pregado a palavra do Senhor, Pedro e João voltaram para Jerusalém. No caminho eles espalhavam o evangelho em muitos povoados da Samaria.

26 Um anjo do Senhor disse a Filipe:

— Apronte-se e vá para o Sul, pelo caminho que vai de Jerusalém até a cidade de Gaza.

(Pouca gente passava por aquele caminho.)

27,28 Filipe se aprontou e foi. No caminho ele viu um eunuco da Etiópia, que estava voltando para o seu país. Esse homem era alto funcionário, tesoureiro e administrador das finanças da rainha da Etiópia. Ele tinha ido a Jerusalém para adorar a Deus. Na volta, sentado na sua carruagem, ele estava lendo o livro do profeta Isaías. 29 Então o Espírito Santo disse a Filipe:

— Chegue perto dessa carruagem e acompanhe-a.

30 Filipe correu para perto da carruagem e ouviu o funcionário lendo o livro do profeta Isaías. Aí perguntou:

— O senhor entende o que está lendo?

31 — Como posso entender se ninguém me explica? — respondeu o funcionário.

Então convidou Filipe para subir e sentar-se com ele na carruagem. 32 A parte das Escrituras Sagradas que o funcionário estava lendo era esta:

"Ele era como um cordeiro que é levado

para ser morto;

era como uma ovelha que fica muda

quando cortam a sua lã.

Ele não disse nada.

33 Foi humilhado, e foram injustos com ele.

Ninguém poderá falar

a respeito de descendentes dele,

já que a sua vida na terra chegou ao fim."

34 O funcionário perguntou a Filipe:

— Por favor, me explique uma coisa! De quem é que o profeta está falando isso? É dele mesmo ou de outro?

35 Então, começando com aquela parte das Escrituras, Filipe anunciou ao funcionário a boa notícia a respeito de Jesus.

36 Enquanto estavam viajando, chegaram a um lugar onde havia água. Então o funcionário disse:

— Veja! Aqui tem água. Será que eu não posso ser batizado?

37 [Filipe respondeu:

— Se o senhor crê de todo o coração, é claro que pode.

E o funcionário disse:

— Sim, eu creio que Jesus Cristo é o Filho de Deus.]

38 Ele mandou parar a carruagem, os dois entraram na água, e Filipe o batizou ali.

39 Quando eles estavam saindo da água, o Espírito do Senhor levou Filipe embora. O funcionário não viu mais Filipe, porém continuou a sua viagem, cheio de alegria. 40 De repente, Filipe se encontrou na cidade de Azoto e seguiu viagem, anunciando o evangelho por todas as cidades até chegar a Cesareia.

1 And, Saul, was taking pleasure with them in his death. Moreover there arose, in that day, a great persecution against the assembly which was in Jerusalem; and , all, were scattered abroad throughout the countries of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2 Howbeit reverent men assisted at the burial of Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.

3 But, Saul, went on to lay waste the assembly, along the houses, going in, and, dragging off both men and women, was

4 They, indeed, therefore, who were scattered abroad, passed through, telling the good-news of the word;

5 And, Philip, going down unto the city of Samaria, proclaimed unto them the Christ.

6 And the multitudes began to give heed unto the things that were being spoken by Philip, with one accord, when they heard him, and saw the signs which he was working.

7 For, from many who had impure spirits, shouting with a loud voice, they were going out, and, many that were paralysed and lame, were cured.

8 And there came to be great joy in that city.

9 But, a certain man named Simon, was already in the city, practising magical arts, and astonishing the nation of Samaria,saying that himself was someone great:

10 Unto whom all were giving heed, from small even to great, sayingThis, is the Power of God, which is called Great.

11 And they were giving heed to him, because that, for a considerable time, with his magical arts, he had astonished them.

12 But, when they believed Philip telling the good news concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they proceeded to be immersed, both men and women.

13 And, Simon himself also, believed; and, having been immersed, was in constant attendance on Philip,and, beholding signs and great works of power coming to pass, was astonished.

14 And the Apostles who were in Jerusalem, hearing that Samaria had welcomed the word of God, sent out unto them Peter and John;

15 Who, indeed, going down, prayed for them, that they might receive Holy Spirit;

16 For, not yet, had it, upon any one of them, fallen, but, only, to begin with, they had been immersed into the name of the Lord Jesus.

17 Then, proceeded they to lay their hands upon them, and they were receiving Holy Spirit.

18 But Simon, seeing that, through means of the laying on of the hands of the Apostles, the Spirit was being given, offered unto them money,

19 SayingGive unto me also this authority,in order that, on whomsoever may lay my hands, he may receive Holy Spirit.

20 And Peter said unto himThy silver, with thee, go to destruction! Because, the free-gift of God, thou didst suppose could, with money, be obtained!

21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter; for, thy heart, is not upright before God.

22 Repent, therefore, from this thy baseness, and entreat of the Lordwhether, after all, the purpose of thy heart shall be forgiven thee;

23 For see that thou servest as a gall-root of bitterness, and a bond of unrighteousness.

24 And Simon, answering, saidEntreat ye, in my behalf, unto the Lord; that, nothing, may come upon me, of the things whereof ye have spoken!

25 They, therefore, having fully borne witness, and spoken the word of the Lord, began their return unto Jerusalem, and, unto many villages of the Samaritans, were they telling the glad tidings.

26 And, a messenger of the Lord, spake unto Philip, sayingArise, and be journeying along southward, unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza,the same, is desert.

27 And, arising, he journeyed. And lo! a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch, one in power under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure who had come to worship in Jerusalem;

28 And was returning, and, sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.

29 And the Spirit said unto PhilipGo near, and join thyself unto this chariot!

30 And, running near, Philip heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and saidDost thou, then, understand what thou art reading?

31 And, he, saidHow indeed should be ableunless someone shall guide me? And he called upon Philip, to come up and sit with him.

32 Now, the passage of Scripture which he was reading, was, this:As a sheep, unto slaughter, was he led, and, as a lamb, before him that sheareth it, is dumb, so, he openeth not his mouth.

33 In his humiliation, his judgment was taken away,his generation, who shall describe? because, his life, is taken away from the earth.

34 And the eunuch, making answer unto Philip, saidI pray thee! Of whom, is the prophet saying this? of himself, or, of some different person?

35 And Philip, opening his mouth, and beginning from this scripture, told him the glad tidings of Jesus.

36 And, as they were journeying along the way, they came unto a certain water,and the eunuch saithLo! water! What doth hinder my being immersed?

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still; and they went down, both, into the water, both Philip and the eunuch,and he immersed him.

39 But, when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch saw him no more; for he was going on his way rejoicing.

40 Now Philip was found at Azotus; and, passing through, he was telling the glad tidings unto all the cities, until he came unto Caesarea.
