Lucas 20

A autoridade de Jesus é questionada

1 Certo dia, quando Jesus ensinava o povo no templo e anunciava o evangelho, aproximaram-se dele os chefes dos sacerdotes, os mestres da lei e os líderes religiosos, 2 que lhe perguntaram:

— Com que autoridade você faz estas coisas? Quem lhe deu esta autoridade?

3 Ele respondeu:

— Eu também farei uma pergunta; digam-me: 4 O batismo de João era do céu ou dos homens?

5 Eles discutiam entre si, dizendo:

— Se dissermos: "Do céu", ele perguntará: "Então, por que vocês não creram nele?". 6 Mas, se dissermos: "Dos homens", todo o povo nos apedrejará, pois estão convencidos de que João era um profeta.

7 Por isso, responderam:

— Não sabemos de onde era.

8 Jesus, então, disse:

— Tampouco direi com que autoridade faço estas coisas.

A Parábola dos Lavradores

9 Então, Jesus passou a contar ao povo esta parábola:

— Certo homem plantou uma vinha, arrendou-a a alguns lavradores e foi fazer uma viagem por longo tempo. 10 Na época da colheita, enviou um servo aos lavradores para que lhe entregassem parte do fruto da vinha. Os lavradores, porém, o espancaram e o mandaram embora de mãos vazias. 11 Ele enviou outro servo, mas a esse também espancaram e o trataram de maneira humilhante, mandando-o embora de mãos vazias. 12 Enviou ainda um terceiro, mas eles o feriram e o expulsaram da vinha.

13 — Então, o dono da vinha disse: "Que farei? Mandarei o meu filho amado; quem sabe o respeitarão".

14 — Quando, porém, os lavradores viram o filho, combinaram uns com os outros, dizendo: "Este é o herdeiro. Vamos matá-lo, e a herança será nossa". 15 Assim, lançaram-no fora da vinha e o mataram.

— O que lhes fará, então, o dono da vinha? 16 Virá, matará aqueles lavradores e dará a vinha a outros.

Quando o povo ouviu isso, disse:

— Que isso nunca aconteça!

17 Jesus olhou fixamente para eles e perguntou:

— Então, qual é o significado disto que está escrito:

"A pedra que os construtores rejeitaram

tornou-se a pedra angular"?*20.17 Sl 118.22.

18 Todo aquele que cair sobre esta pedra será despedaçado, e aquele sobre quem ela cair será reduzido a pó.

19 Os mestres da lei e os chefes dos sacerdotes procuravam um meio de prendê-lo imediatamente, pois perceberam que era contra eles que havia contado aquela parábola. No entanto, tinham medo do povo.

O pagamento de imposto a César

20 Pondo-se a vigiá-lo, eles mandaram espias que se fingiam de justos para apanhar Jesus em alguma coisa que ele dissesse, de forma que o pudessem entregar ao poder e à autoridade do governador.

21 Assim, os espias lhe perguntaram:

— Mestre, sabemos que falas e ensinas o que é correto e que não mostras parcialidade, mas ensinas o caminho de Deus conforme a verdade. 22 É certo pagar imposto a César ou não?

23 Jesus, porém, conhecendo a astúcia deles, disse-lhes:

24 — Mostrem-me um denário.*20.24 O denário era uma moeda de prata equivalente à diária de um trabalhador braçal. De quem é a imagem e a inscrição que há nele?

25 — De César — responderam.

Ele lhes disse:

— Então, deem*20.25 Ou devolvam. a César o que é de César e a Deus o que é de Deus.

26 Eles não conseguiram apanhá-lo em nenhuma palavra diante do povo. Admirados com a sua resposta, ficaram em silêncio.

A ressurreição e o casamento

27 Alguns dos saduceus, que dizem não haver ressurreição, aproximaram-se de Jesus com a seguinte questão:

28 — Mestre, Moisés nos deixou escrito que, se um homem morrer e deixar mulher, mas não deixar filhos, o irmão desse homem deverá se casar com a viúva e gerar descendência para o seu irmão. 29 Havia sete irmãos. O primeiro casou-se e morreu sem deixar filhos. 30 Então, o segundo 31 e o terceiro casaram-se com ela e, de igual modo, os sete morreram sem deixar filhos. 32 Finalmente, morreu também a mulher. 33 Na ressurreição, de qual deles será esposa, visto que os sete foram casados com ela?

34 Jesus respondeu:

— Os filhos desta era casam-se e são dados em casamento, 35 mas os que forem considerados dignos de tomar parte na era que há de vir e na ressurreição dos mortos não se casam nem são dados em casamento, 36 nem podem voltar a morrer, pois são como os anjos. São filhos de Deus, visto que são filhos da ressurreição. 37 Agora, no relato da sarça, Moisés mesmo mostrou que os mortos ressuscitam, quando ele chama o Senhor "o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó".*20.37 Êx 3.6.38 Ele não é Deus de mortos, mas de vivos, pois para ele todos vivem.

39 Alguns dos mestres da lei disseram:

— Respondeste bem, Mestre!

40 Assim, ninguém mais ousava fazer-lhe perguntas.

O Cristo é Senhor de Davi

41 Então, Jesus lhes perguntou:

— Como dizem que o Cristo é filho de Davi? 42 O próprio Davi afirma no livro de Salmos:

"O Senhor disse ao meu Senhor:

‘Assente-se à minha direita

43 até que eu faça dos seus inimigos

um estrado para os seus pés’ ".*20.42,43 Sl 110.1.

44 Davi o chama "Senhor". Então, como ele pode ser seu filho?

45 Enquanto todo o povo o ouvia, Jesus disse aos seus discípulos:

46 — Cuidado com os mestres da lei. Eles gostam de andar com roupas especiais e amam as saudações nas praças, os assentos mais importantes nas sinagogas e os lugares de honra nos banquetes. 47 Devoram a casa das viúvas e, para disfarçar, fazem longas orações. Esses homens serão punidos com maior rigor!

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

1 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 "Tell us by what authority you are doing these things," they said. "Who gave you this authority?"

3 He replied, "I will also ask you a question. Tell me:4 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?"

5 They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet."

7 So they answered, "We don’t know where it was from."

8 Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

The Parable of the Tenants

9 He went on to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed.12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

13 "Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’

14 "But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

"What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?16 He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others."

When the people heard this, they said, "God forbid!"

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

" ‘The stone the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone’* 20:17 Psalm 118:22 ?

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed."

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said, so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. 21 So the spies questioned him: "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 "Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?"

"Caesar’s," they replied.

25 He said to them, "Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s."

26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

The Resurrection and Marriage

27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28 "Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?"

34 Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’*20:37 Exodus 3:638 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive."

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, "Well said, teacher!" 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Whose Son Is the Messiah?

41 Then Jesus said to them, "Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

" ‘The Lord said to my Lord:

"Sit at my right hand

43 until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet." ’* 20:43 Psalm 110:1

44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?"

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 "Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely."
