Jesus e a tradição judaica

1 Então, alguns fariseus e mestres da lei, que haviam chegado de Jerusalém, foram a Jesus e perguntaram:

2 — Por que os seus discípulos transgridem a tradição dos anciãos? Pois eles não lavam as mãos antes de comer!

3 Jesus respondeu:

— E por que vocês transgridem o mandamento de Deus por causa da tradição de vocês? 4 Pois Deus disse: "Honre o seu pai e a sua mãe"*15.4 Êx 20.12; Dt 5.16. e "Quem amaldiçoar o seu pai ou a sua mãe terá que ser executado".*15.4 Êx 21.17; Lv 20.9.5 Mas vocês afirmam que, se alguém disser ao seu pai ou à sua mãe: "Qualquer ajuda que vocês poderiam receber de mim já dediquei a Deus como oferta", 6 certamente não precisa honrar o seu pai.*15.6 Há manuscritos que trazem pai e a sua mãe. Assim, vocês anulam a palavra de Deus por causa da tradição de vocês. 7 Hipócritas! Bem profetizou Isaías acerca de vocês, dizendo:

8 "Este povo me honra com os lábios,

mas o seu coração está longe de mim.

9 Em vão me adoram;

os seus ensinamentos não passam de mandamentos

ensinados por homens".*15.8,9 Is 29.13.

10 Jesus chamou para junto de si a multidão e disse:

— Ouçam e entendam: 11 não é o que entra pela boca que torna o homem impuro, mas o que sai da sua boca; isto, sim, o torna impuro.

12 Então, os discípulos se aproximaram dele e perguntaram:

— O Senhor sabe que os fariseus encontraram motivo de tropeço quando ouviram isso?

13 Ele respondeu:

— Toda planta que o meu Pai celestial não plantou será arrancada pelas raízes. 14 Deixem-nos; eles são guias cegos.*15.14 Há manuscritos que trazem são cegos, guias de cegos. Se um cego guiar outro cego, cairão ambos em um buraco.

15 Então, Pedro pediu-lhe:

— Explica-nos esta parábola.

16 — Vocês ainda não a entenderam? — perguntou Jesus. 17 — Não percebem que o que entra pela boca vai para o estômago e mais tarde é expelido? 18 Mas as coisas que saem da boca vêm do coração, e é isso o que contamina o homem. 19 Pois do coração saem os maus pensamentos, os homicídios, os adultérios, as imoralidades sexuais, os roubos, os falsos testemunhos e as calúnias. 20 Essas coisas tornam o homem impuro, mas comer sem lavar as mãos não o torna impuro.

A fé da mulher cananeia

21 Depois que saiu daquele lugar, Jesus retirou-se para a região de Tiro e Sidom. 22 Uma mulher cananeia, natural dali, veio a ele, gritando:

— Senhor, Filho de Davi, tem misericórdia de mim! Minha filha está endemoniada e sofrendo muito.

23 Jesus, porém, não lhe respondeu nenhuma palavra. Então, os seus discípulos se aproximaram dele e pediram:

— Manda-a embora, pois vem gritando atrás de nós.

24 Ele respondeu:

— Não fui enviado senão às ovelhas perdidas do povo de Israel.

25 A mulher veio, adorou-o de joelhos e disse:

— Senhor, ajuda-me!

26 Ele respondeu:

— Não é certo tirar o pão dos filhos e lançá-lo aos cachorrinhos.

27 Ela, porém, disse:

— Sim, Senhor, mas até os cachorrinhos comem das migalhas que caem da mesa dos seus donos.

28 Jesus respondeu:

— Mulher, grande é a sua fé! Seja feito conforme você deseja.

Naquele mesmo instante, a sua filha foi curada.

A segunda multiplicação dos pães

29 Jesus saiu dali e foi para a beira do mar da Galileia. Depois, subiu a um monte e sentou-se. 30 Grandes multidões dirigiram-se a ele, levando-lhe aleijados, cegos, mancos, mudos e muitos outros, e os colocaram aos seus pés; e ele os curou. 31 O povo ficou admirado quando viu os mudos falando, os mancos sendo curados, os aleijados andando e os cegos vendo. E louvaram ao Deus de Israel.

32 Jesus chamou os seus discípulos e disse:

— Tenho compaixão desta multidão; já faz três dias que eles estão comigo e nada têm para comer. Não quero mandá-los embora com fome, porque podem desfalecer pelo caminho.

33 Os seus discípulos responderam:

— Onde, neste lugar deserto, poderíamos conseguir pão suficiente para alimentar tanta gente?

34 — Quantos pães vocês têm? — perguntou Jesus.

— Sete — responderam — e alguns peixinhos.

35 Ele ordenou à multidão que sentasse no chão. 36 Depois de pegar os sete pães e os peixes e dar graças, partiu-os e os entregou aos discípulos, e os discípulos, à multidão. 37 Todos comeram até ficarem satisfeitos, e ajuntaram sete cestos cheios de pedaços que sobraram. 38 Os que comeram foram quatro mil homens, sem contar mulheres e crianças. 39 Tendo despedido a multidão, Jesus entrou no barco e foi para a região de Magadã.

That Which Defiles

1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!"

3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’*15:4 Exodus 20:12; Deut. 5:16and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’*15:4 Exodus 21:17; Lev. 20:95 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

8 " ‘These people honor me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me.

9 They worship me in vain;

their teachings are merely human rules.’* 15:9 Isaiah 29:13 "

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them."

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?"

13 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.14 Leave them; they are blind guides.*15:14 Some manuscripts blind guides of the blindIf the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."

15 Peter said, "Explain the parable to us."

16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17 "Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them."

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly."

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."

24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."

25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.

26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs."

27 "Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table."

28 Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.

32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."

33 His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?"

34 "How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked.

"Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish."

35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
