Jesus e João Batista

1 Quando acabou de instruir os seus doze discípulos, Jesus saiu para ensinar e pregar nas cidades da Galileia.*11.1 Grego: cidades deles.

2 João, ao ouvir na prisão o que Cristo estava fazendo, enviou os seus discípulos para lhe perguntarem:

3 — És tu aquele que haveria de vir ou devemos esperar outro?

4 Jesus respondeu:

— Voltem e anunciem a João o que vocês ouvem e veem: 5 os cegos veem, os aleijados andam, os leprosos*11.5 A palavra grega era utilizada para designar vários tipos de doença de pele, não somente lepra. são purificados, os surdos ouvem, os mortos são ressuscitados, e o evangelho está sendo pregado aos pobres. 6 Bem-aventurado aquele que não tropeça por minha causa.

7 Enquanto os discípulos de João se retiravam, Jesus começou a falar à multidão a respeito de João:

— O que vocês foram ver no deserto? Um caniço agitado pelo vento? 8 Se não, o que foram ver? Um homem vestido de roupas finas? Ora, os que vestem roupas finas estão nos palácios. 9 Afinal, o que foram ver? Um profeta? Sim, eu digo a vocês, mais que profeta. 10 Este é aquele a respeito de quem está escrito:

"Vejam, enviarei o meu mensageiro à sua frente;

ele preparará o seu caminho diante de você".*11.10 Ml 3.1.

11 — Em verdade lhes digo que, entre os que nasceram de mulher, não surgiu ninguém maior do que João Batista; no entanto, o menor no reino dos céus é maior do que ele. 12 Desde os dias de João Batista até agora, o reino dos céus foi submetido à violência,*11.12 Ou tem avançado com força. e pessoas violentas o invadem. 13 Pois todos os Profetas e a Lei profetizaram até João. 14 E, se vocês quiserem aceitar, este é o Elias que havia de vir. 15 Aquele que tem ouvidos ouça!

16 — A que posso comparar esta geração? São como crianças que ficam sentadas nas praças e gritam umas às outras:

17 "Nós tocamos flauta,

mas vocês não dançaram;

cantamos um lamento,

mas vocês não se entristeceram".

18 — Pois veio João, que não comia nem bebia, e dizem: "Ele tem demônio". 19 Veio o Filho do homem, que come e bebe, e dizem: "Aí está um glutão e beberrão, amigo de publicanos*11.19 Os publicanos eram coletores de impostos, malvistos pelo povo. e pecadores". Mas a sabedoria é comprovada pelas obras que a acompanham.

Ai das cidades que não se arrependem

20 Então, Jesus começou a denunciar as cidades em que havia sido realizada a maioria dos seus milagres, porque não tinham se arrependido.

21 — Ai de você, Corazim! Ai de você, Betsaida! Porque, se os milagres que foram realizados entre vocês tivessem ocorrido em Tiro e em Sidom, há muito elas teriam se arrependido com panos de saco e cinza. 22 Mas eu lhes digo que, no dia do juízo, haverá mais tolerância para Tiro e Sidom do que para vocês. 23 E você, Cafarnaum, será elevada até o céu? Não, você descerá até o Hades!*11.23 Essa palavra pode ser traduzida por inferno, sepulcro, morte ou profundezas. Se os milagres que em você foram realizados tivessem ocorrido em Sodoma, ela teria permanecido até hoje. 24 Mas eu lhes digo que, no dia do juízo, haverá mais tolerância para a terra de Sodoma do que para você.

Descanso para os cansados

25 Naquela ocasião, Jesus disse:

— Eu te louvo, Pai, Senhor do céu e da terra, porque escondeste estas coisas dos sábios e cultos e as revelaste aos simples. 26 Sim, Pai, pois assim foi do teu agrado.

27 — Todas as coisas me foram entregues por meu Pai. Ninguém conhece o Filho, a não ser o Pai; e ninguém conhece o Pai, a não ser o Filho e aqueles a quem o Filho o quiser revelar.

28 — Venham a mim todos os que estão cansados e sobrecarregados, e eu darei descanso a vocês. 29 Tomem sobre vocês o meu jugo e aprendam de mim, porque sou manso e humilde de coração, e vocês encontrarão descanso para a alma. 30 Pois o meu jugo é suave, e o meu fardo é leve.

Jesus and John the Baptist

1 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.*11:1 Greek in their towns

2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?"

4 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy*11:5 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin.are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me."

7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10 This is the one about whom it is written:

" ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,

who will prepare your way before you.’* 11:10 Mal. 3:1

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,*11:12 Or been forcefully advancingand violent people have been raiding it.13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.

16 "To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 " ‘We played the pipe for you,

and you did not dance;

we sang a dirge,

and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds."

Woe on Unrepentant Towns

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.*11:23 That is, the realm of the deadFor if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."

The Father Revealed in the Son

25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
