1 No início do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, veio esta palavra da parte do Senhor:2 "Assim diz o Senhor: Coloque-se no pátio do templo do Senhor e fale a todo o povo das cidades de Judá que vem adorar no templo do Senhor. Diga-lhes tudo o que eu lhe ordenar; não omita uma só palavra.3 Talvez eles escutem e cada um se converta de sua má conduta. Então eu me arrependerei e não trarei sobre eles a desgraça que estou planejando por causa do mal que eles têm praticado.4 Diga-lhes: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Se vocês não me escutarem nem seguirem a minha lei, que dei a vocês,5 e se não ouvirem as palavras dos meus servos, os profetas, os quais tenho enviado a vocês vez após vez, embora vocês não os tenham ouvido,6 então farei deste templo o que fiz do santuário de Siló, e desta cidade um objeto de maldição entre todas as nações da terra’ ".7 Os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo ouviram Jeremias falar essas palavras no templo do Senhor.8 E assim que Jeremias acabou de dizer ao povo tudo o que o Senhor lhe tinha ordenado, os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo o prenderam e disseram: "Você certamente morrerá!9 Por que você profetiza em nome do Senhor e afirma que este templo será como Siló e que esta cidade ficará arrasada e abandonada? " E todo o povo se ajuntou em volta de Jeremias no templo do Senhor.10 Quando os líderes de Judá souberam disso, foram do palácio real até o templo do Senhor e se assentaram para julgar, à entrada da porta Nova do templo do Senhor.11 E os sacerdotes e os profetas disseram aos líderes e a todo o povo: "Este homem deve ser condenado à morte porque profetizou contra esta cidade. Então o Senhor se arrependerá da desgraça que pronunciou contra vocês.14 Quanto a mim, estou nas mãos de vocês; façam comigo o que acharem bom e certo.15 Entretanto, estejam certos de que, se me matarem, vocês, esta cidade e os seus habitantes, serão responsáveis por derramar sangue inocente, pois, na verdade, o Senhor enviou-me a vocês para anunciar-lhes essas palavras".16 Então os líderes e todo o povo disseram aos sacerdotes e aos profetas: "Este homem não deve ser condenado à morte! Ele nos falou em nome do Senhor, do nosso Deus".17 Alguns dos líderes da terra se levantaram e disseram a toda a assembléia do povo:18 "Miquéias de Moresete profetizou nos dias de Ezequias, rei de Judá, dizendo a todo o povo de Judá: ‘Assim diz Senhor dos Exércitos: " ‘Sião será arada como um campo. Jerusalém se tornará um monte de entulho, a colina do templo um monte coberto de mato’.19 "Acaso Ezequias, rei de Judá, ou alguém do povo de Judá o matou? Ezequias não temeu ao Senhor e não buscou o seu favor? E o Senhor não se arrependeu da desgraça que pronunciara contra eles? Estamos a ponto de trazer uma terrível desgraça sobre nós! "20 Outro homem que profetizou em nome do Senhor foi Urias, filho de Semaías, de Quiriate-Jearim. Ele profetizou contra esta cidade e contra esta terra as mesmas coisas anunciadas por Jeremias.21 Ouvindo isso, o rei Jeoaquim, todos os seus homens de guerra e os seus oficiais, o rei procurou matá-lo. Quando Urias soube disso, teve medo e fugiu para o Egito.22 Mas o rei Jeoaquim mandou ao Egito Elnatã, filho de Acbor, e com ele alguns homens,23 os quais trouxeram Urias do Egito e o levaram ao rei Jeoaquim, que o mandou matar à espada. Depois, jogaram o corpo dele numa vala comum.24 Mas Aicam, filho de Safã, protegeu Jeremias, impedindo que ele fosse entregue ao povo para ser executado.

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from Yahweh, saying,2 Thus says Yahweh: Stand in the court of Yahweh's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in Yahweh's house, all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not diminish a word.3 It may be they will listen, and turn every man from his evil way; that I may repent of the evil which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings.4 And you will say to them, Thus says Yahweh: If you{+} will not listen to me, to walk in my law, which I have set before you{+},5 to listen to the words of my slaves the prophets, whom I send to you{+}, even rising up early and sending them, but you{+} haven't listened;6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.7 And the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Yahweh.8 And it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold on him, saying, You will surely die.9 Why have you prophesied in the name of Yahweh, saying, This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant? And all the people had gathered to Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh.10 And when the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of Yahweh; and they sat in the entry of the new gate of Yahweh's [house].11 Then the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy of death; for he has prophesied against this city, as you{+} have heard with your{+} ears.12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and to all the people, saying, Yahweh sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you{+} have heard.13 Now therefore amend your{+} ways and your{+} doings, and obey the voice of Yahweh your{+} God; and Yahweh will repent of the evil that he has pronounced against you{+}.14 But as for me, look, I am in your{+} hand: do with me as is good and right in your{+} eyes.15 Only know{+} for certain that, if you{+} put me to death, you{+} will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants; for of a truth Yahweh has sent me to you{+} to speak all these words in your{+} ears.16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets: This man is not worthy of death; for he has spoken to us in the name of Yahweh our God.17 Then certain of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying,18 Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says Yahweh of hosts: Zion will be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.19 Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear Yahweh, and entreat the favor of Yahweh, and Yahweh repented of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus we are committing great evil against our own souls.20 And there was also a man who prophesied in the name of Yahweh, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath-jearim; and he prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah:21 and when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty-men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uriah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt:22 and Jehoiakim the king sent men into Egypt, [namely], Elnathan the son of Achbor, and certain men with him, into Egypt;23 and they fetched forth Uriah out of Egypt, and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.24 But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
