1 Quando Roboão havia se fortalecido e se estabelecido firmemente, ele e todo o Israel abandonaram a lei do Senhor. 2 Por causa dessa infidelidade ao Senhor, no quinto ano do reinado de Roboão, Sisaque, rei do Egito, subiu e atacou Jerusalém. 3 Veio com 1.200 carros de guerra, 60.000 cavaleiros e um exército incontável de soldados de infantaria líbios, suquitas e etíopes.*12.3 Em hebraico, e cuxitas. 4 Sisaque conquistou as cidades fortificadas de Judá e avançou para atacar Jerusalém.

5 Então o profeta Semaías foi ao encontro de Roboão e dos líderes de Judá, que haviam todos fugido para Jerusalém por causa de Sisaque. Semaías lhes disse: "Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Vocês me abandonaram, por isso agora eu os abandonei, entregando-os nas mãos de Sisaque’".

6 Então os líderes de Israel e o rei se humilharam e disseram: "O Senhor é justo!".

7 Quando o Senhor viu que eles se humilharam, deu a Semaías esta mensagem: "Visto que se humilharam, não os destruirei completamente, mas logo lhes darei algum alívio. Não usarei Sisaque para derramar minha ira sobre Jerusalém. 8 Eles, contudo, se tornarão servos dele, para que aprendam a diferença entre servir a mim e servir aos governantes da terra".

9 Então Sisaque, rei do Egito, subiu e atacou Jerusalém. Saqueou os tesouros do templo do Senhor e do palácio real; levou tudo, incluindo os escudos de ouro que Salomão havia feito. 10 Mais tarde, o rei Roboão fez escudos de bronze para substituí-los e os confiou aos oficiais da guarda que protegiam a entrada do palácio real. 11 Sempre que o rei ia ao templo do Senhor, os guardas levavam os escudos e, em seguida, os devolviam à sala da guarda. 12 Porque Roboão se humilhou, a ira do Senhor se afastou dele, e ele não foi completamente destruído. Ainda havia coisas boas na terra de Judá.

13 O rei Roboão se estabeleceu firmemente em Jerusalém e continuou a reinar. Tinha 41 anos quando começou a reinar, e reinou por dezessete anos em Jerusalém, a cidade que o Senhor havia escolhido dentre todas as tribos de Israel como lugar para o seu nome. A mãe de Roboão se chamava Naamá e era de Amom. 14 Ele foi um rei perverso, pois não buscou o Senhor de todo o coração.

15 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Roboão, do início ao fim, estão anotados no Registro do Profeta Semaías e no Registro do Vidente Ido, que fazem parte do registro genealógico. Houve guerra constante entre Roboão e Jeroboão. 16 Quando Roboão morreu e se reuniu a seus antepassados, foi sepultado na Cidade de Davi. Seu filho Abias foi seu sucessor.

1 And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him. 2 And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the LORD, 3 With twelve hundred chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians. 4 And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem.

5 Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak. 6 Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The LORD is righteous. 7 And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.*12.7 some: or, a little while 8 Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries. 9 So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made. 10 Instead of which king Rehoboam made shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king’s house. 11 And when the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber. 12 And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him, that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.*12.12 and also…: or, and yet in Judah there were good things

13 So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. 14 And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.*12.14 prepared: or, fixed 15 Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies?
