1 Certo dia, os membros do grupo de profetas disseram a Eliseu: "Como vê, este lugar onde nos reunimos é pequeno demais. 2 Vamos descer ao rio Jordão, onde há muitos troncos, e construir ali um lugar para nos reunirmos".

"Está bem", disse Eliseu. "Podem ir."

3 "Venha conosco", sugeriu um deles.

"Eu irei", disse ele. 4 E foi com eles.

Quando chegaram ao Jordão, começaram a derrubar árvores. 5 Enquanto um deles cortava um tronco, a parte de ferro do machado caiu no rio. "Ai, meu senhor!", gritou. "O machado era emprestado!"

6 "Onde caiu?", perguntou o homem de Deus. Quando mostraram o lugar para Eliseu, ele cortou um galho e o jogou na água, e fez o ferro do machado flutuar. 7 "Pegue-o", disse Eliseu. E o homem estendeu a mão e o pegou.

8 Quando o rei da Síria estava em guerra contra Israel, consultava seus oficiais e dizia: "Posicionaremos nossas tropas em tal lugar".

9 De imediato, o homem de Deus advertia o rei de Israel: "Não se aproxime de tal lugar, pois os sírios planejam posicionar suas tropas ali". 10 E o rei de Israel mandava um aviso para o lugar indicado pelo homem de Deus. Várias vezes ele advertiu o rei de que ficasse alerta naqueles lugares.

11 Furioso com essa situação, o rei sírio reuniu seus oficiais e perguntou: "Qual de vocês anda informando o rei de Israel sobre meus planos?".

12 "Ó meu senhor, o rei, não somos nós", respondeu um dos oficiais. "Eliseu, o profeta de Israel, revela ao rei de Israel até as palavras que o senhor diz em seus aposentos!"

13 O rei ordenou: "Vão e descubram onde ele está, para que eu mande capturá-lo!".

Então lhe informaram: "Eliseu está em Dotã". 14 Assim, certa noite, o rei da Síria mandou um grande exército com muitos carros de guerra e cavalos para cercar a cidade.

15 Na manhã seguinte, o servo do homem de Deus se levantou bem cedo. Ao sair, viu que havia soldados, cavalos e carros de guerra por toda parte. "Ai, meu senhor, o que faremos agora?", exclamou o servo.

16 "Não tenha medo!", disse Eliseu. "Pois do nosso lado há muitos mais que do lado deles!" 17 Então Eliseu orou: "Ó Senhor, abre os olhos dele, para que veja". O Senhor abriu os olhos do servo, e ele viu as colinas ao redor de Eliseu cheias de cavalos e carruagens de fogo.

18 Quando os sírios avançaram na direção de Eliseu, ele orou: "Ó Senhor, faze que fiquem cegos". E o Senhor fez que ficassem cegos, conforme Eliseu havia pedido.

19 Então Eliseu saiu e lhes disse: "Vocês tomaram o caminho errado! Esta não é a cidade certa! Sigam-me, e eu os levarei até o homem que procuram". Então ele os guiou à cidade de Samaria.

20 Assim que entraram em Samaria, Eliseu orou: "Ó Senhor, agora abre os olhos deles, para que vejam". O Senhor abriu os olhos deles, e descobriram que estavam no meio de Samaria.

21 Quando o rei de Israel os viu, perguntou a Eliseu: "Devo matá-los, meu senhor? Devo matá-los?".

22 "Claro que não!", respondeu Eliseu. "Eles não são prisioneiros que você capturou na batalha. Dê-lhes comida e bebida e mande-os de volta para casa, para o senhor deles."

23 Então o rei lhes ofereceu um grande banquete e os mandou de volta para casa, para o senhor deles. Depois disso, os invasores sírios não invadiram mais a terra de Israel.

24 Algum tempo depois, porém, Ben-Hadade, rei da Síria, reuniu todo o seu exército e cercou Samaria. 25 Como resultado, houve grande fome na cidade. O cerco durou tanto tempo que uma cabeça de jumento era vendida por 960 gramas de prata, e um terço de litro de esterco de pombo, por 60 gramas de prata.

26 Um dia, quando o rei de Israel caminhava pelos muros da cidade, uma mulher gritou para ele: "Ó meu senhor, o rei! Por favor, ajude-me!".

27 Ele respondeu: "Se o Senhor não a ajudar, o que poderei fazer? Não tenho alimento na eira, nem vinho na prensa de uvas". 28 Mas depois o rei perguntou: "Qual é o problema?".

Ela respondeu: "Esta mulher me disse: ‘Vamos comer o seu filho hoje, e amanhã comeremos o meu’. 29 Então cozinhamos meu filho e o comemos. No dia seguinte, eu disse a ela: ‘Mate seu filho para que o comamos’, mas ela o havia escondido".

30 Quando o rei ouviu isso, rasgou as roupas. E, enquanto ele caminhava pelos muros, o povo viu que, por baixo do manto, ele usava pano de saco junto à pele. 31 Então o rei jurou: "Que Deus me castigue severamente se eu não separar a cabeça de Eliseu de seus ombros ainda hoje!".

32 Eliseu estava sentado em sua casa com as autoridades de Israel quando o rei mandou um mensageiro até ele. Antes, porém, que o mensageiro chegasse, Eliseu disse às autoridades: "O filho do assassino enviou um homem para cortar minha cabeça. Quando o mensageiro chegar, fechem a porta e não o deixem entrar. Logo ouviremos os passos de seu senhor atrás dele".

33 Enquanto Eliseu ainda falava, o mensageiro chegou e comunicou a mensagem do rei: "Toda essa desgraça vem do Senhor! Por que devo continuar a esperar no Senhor?".

1 The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, "See now, the place where we live and meet with you is too small for us. 2 Please let us go to the Jordan, and each man take a beam from there, and let’s make us a place there, where we may live."

He answered, "Go!"

3 One said, "Please be pleased to go with your servants."

He answered, "I will go." 4 So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood. 5 But as one was cutting down a tree, the ax head fell into the water. Then he cried out and said, "Alas, my master! For it was borrowed."

6 The man of God asked, "Where did it fall?" He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float. 7 He said, "Take it." So he put out his hand and took it.

8 Now the king of Syria was at war against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, "My camp will be in such and such a place."

9 The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there." 10 The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once or twice. 11 The king of Syria’s heart was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, "Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?"

12 One of his servants said, "No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom."

13 He said, "Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him."

He was told, "Behold, he is in Dothan."

14 Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night and surrounded the city. 15 When the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?"

16 He answered, "Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them." 17 Elisha prayed, and said, "Yahweh, please open his eyes, that he may see." Yahweh opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha. 18 When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to Yahweh, and said, "Please strike this people with blindness."

He struck them with blindness according to Elisha’s word.

19 Elisha said to them, "This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek." He led them to Samaria. 20 When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, "Yahweh, open these men’s eyes, that they may see."

Yahweh opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the middle of Samaria.

21 The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, "My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?"

22 He answered, "You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, then go to their master."

23 He prepared a great feast for them. After they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel.

24 After this, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria. 25 There was a great famine in Samaria. Behold, they besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver. 26 As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, "Help, my lord, O king!"

27 He said, "If Yahweh doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From of the threshing floor, or from the wine press?" 28 Then the king asked her, "What is your problem?"

She answered, "This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son."

30 When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. Now he was passing by on the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his body. 31 Then he said, "God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat stays on him today."

32 But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, "Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?"

33 While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, "Behold, this evil is from Yahweh. Why should I wait for Yahweh any longer?"
